Bring Jesus to the poor

Pope Francis dreams of a church having a “missionary impulse.” (EG. 27) We need to bring Jesus to the poor, rather than bring the poor to the church. What can we do to abandon the attitude, “We have always done it this way.”? (EG. 33) It is not that our past ways were bad, but too often they fail to respond to people in the realities of today. We fail to recognize that many of our traditional ways failed to connect with many people of times past. A missionary impulse is not exclusively for distant communities. It is necessary for people living in every community.

We recognize tremendous needs in refugee camps, nations at war, people suffering from natural disasters, but there are homeless people in all of our large cities. There are great numbers of people in prisons, detention centers and medical facilities with little contact with communities of faith. Our missionary impulse needs to bring the love of Jesus to the poor. Before seeking to correct another’s ways, one must bring Jesus and his love to the poor. That includes welcoming them to union with Christ including sacramental union with Jesus.

Many of the ways that we have always done things need to be examined as to their place in welcoming people to an experience of Jesus. It is difficult to imagine Jesus who spoke lovingly with the Samaritan woman to be happy with so many divorced Catholics feeling unwelcome in our churches. When we consider people on the periphery of the church, they are not only those on our borders, in refugee camps, or migrant centers waiting for their immigration petitions to be heard.

Whether developing a missionary spirit begins with welcoming the migrant, or visiting those in prison, feeding the hungry, caring for people in broken marriages or healing those excluded because of prejudice and harsh societal judgment, we need to develop a missionary impulse responsive to the realities of today. May God inspire all people of God to develop a missionary impulse.

O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
