Predicar el Evangelio

El viernes, en la lectura de la primera carta de Pablo a los Corintios, Pablo dijo que “No me envió Cristo a bautizar, sino a predicar el Evangelio”. Pablo bautizó y llevó a la gente a la gracia del sacramento, pero su llamado no era como pastor. Fue llamado a predicar el Evangelio. A veces reconocemos el trabajo de alguien, pero no reconocemos lo que da sentido a la vida de esa persona. Al acercarnos al Día del Trabajo, considero el propósito del día. No se trata de celebrar el trabajo, sino de honrar al trabajador, al obrero. No somos simplemente resumidos por el trabajo que hacemos.

Cuando la gente se preguntaba por las palabras y las obras de Jesús, preguntaban de dónde había obtenido su autoridad para enseñar. Dijeron: “¿No es éste el hijo del carpintero?” La forma en que hicieron la pregunta es irrespetuosa con José. Él era sólo un carpintero a sus ojos. Ni siquiera se le dio el respeto de ser identificado por su nombre.

El Día del Trabajo es un día para honrar al trabajador, ya sea un carpintero, un plomero, un techador, un trabajador de la salud, un maestro o cualquier otro trabajador. El Día del Trabajo es un feriado federal para reconocer las muchas contribuciones que los trabajadores han hecho a la fortaleza, la prosperidad y el bienestar de los Estados Unidos. Paul no se identificaba solo con una parte de su vocación. Celebramos este fin de semana al trabajador que es mucho más importante que el trabajo realizado.

To preach the Gospel

On Friday, in the reading from Paul’s first letter to the Corinthians, Paul said that “he was not sent to baptize, but to preach the Gospel.” Paul did baptize and bring people to the grace of sacrament, but his call was not as a pastor. He was called to preach the Gospel. Sometimes we recognize someone’s work, while not recognizing what gives meaning to that person’s life. As we approach Labor Day, I consider the day’s purpose. It is not about celebrating work, but about honoring the worker, the laborer. We are not simply summed up by the work that we do.

When people wondered at the words and the works of Jesus, they asked where he got his authority to teach. They said, “Isn´t he the carpenter´s son?” The way that they asked the question is disrespectful of Joseph. He was just a carpenter in their eyes. He wasn´t even given the respect of being identified by name.

Labor Day is a day to honor the laborer, whether a carpenter, a plumber, a roofer, a health care worker, a teacher or any worker. Labor Day is a federal holiday to recognize the many contributions workers have made to America’s strength, prosperity, and well-being. (U.S. Department of Labor)

Paul was not identified by just one part of his calling. We celebrate this weekend the laborer who is much more important than the work performed.

Nuestra primera misión como Iglesia es predicar la Buena Nueva a todo el pueblo y brindar los medios sacramentales y espirituales para que se acerque a Dios. Jesús envió a sus discípulos a proclamar el reino de Dios por toda Galilea y Judea. Brindar atención espiritual es la misión de la Iglesia y debemos incluir en ella a los pobres y a los migrantes. ¿Prestamos suficiente atención a lo que lamenta el Papa Francisco? “Quiero expresar con dolor que la peor discriminación que sufren los pobres es la falta de atención espiritual”. (EG. 200)

Los migrantes tienen necesidades sociales y físicas extraordinarias y urgentes. A medida que la Iglesia responde a esas necesidades, también debemos atender a sus necesidades espirituales ordinarias. Para atender sus necesidades, el Papa Francisco dice que debemos “abandonar el cómodo criterio pastoral del ‘Siempre se ha hecho así’.  Invito a todos a ser audaces y creativos en esta tarea de repensar los objetivos, las estructuras, el estilo y los métodos evangelizadores de las propias comunidades”. (EG. 33)

Be bold and creative

The first mission of the Church is to preach the Good News to all people, and to provide the sacramental and spiritual means to grow closer to God. Jesus sent his disciples out to proclaim the kingdom of God throughout Galilee and Judea. Providing spiritual care is the mission of the Church, and we must include the poor and the migrant in it. Do we pay enough attention to what Pope Francis’ regret? “I want to say, with regret, that the worst discrimination which the poor suffer is the lack of spiritual care.” (EG. 200)

Migrants have extraordinary and urgent social and physical needs. As the Church responds to those needs, we must also attend to their ordinary spiritual needs. To attend to their needs, Pope Francis says that we need to “abandon the complacent attitude that says: ‘We have always done it this way.’ I invite everyone to be bold and creative in this task of rethinking the goals, structures, style and methods of evangelization in their respective communities.” (EG. 33)

Teniendo un mal día

Uno de los placeres de caminar con gente pobre es que a veces nos encontramos con una gracia extraordinaria. Encontré a una persona de un grupo a menudo difamado en el mundo de hoy. Estaba teniendo un mal día. Cuando pasé, me reconoció como un sacerdote y decidió que era un buen día para descargar su ira con alguien. Dijo algunas cosas muy desagradables sobre los sacerdotes y la Iglesia Católica. Dijo: “La Iglesia es sólo un lugar de reunión para hipócritas”.

Una semana después se disculpó cuando me vio. Le dije: “No te preocupes, a la Iglesia la han llamado peores cosas”. Ese tipo de ira es una experiencia rara común en mi trabajo con migrantes y personas en la “periferia”. Realmente no pensé mucho en eso cuando desahogó su ira contra el mundo. Sin embargo, cuando se disculpó, fue un momento especial de gracia. He visto al hombre varias veces en mis caminatas, y desde ese primer encuentro, siempre ha sido amable y siempre se asegura de saludarme.

Todos podemos tener un “mal día”, pero cuando una persona tiene el coraje de disculparse, es un “buen día”. Ojalá todos tengamos el coraje de disculparnos cuando se nos presente la oportunidad.

Having a bad day

One of the joys of walking with poor people is that at times we meet extraordinary grace. I met a person of an often-maligned group in today´s world. He was having a bad day. As I passed, he recognized me as a priest, and he decided it was a good day take out some anger at someone. He said some very nasty things about priests and the Catholic Church. He said, “The Church is just a gathering place for hypocrites.”

A week later he apologized when he saw me. I said, “Don’t worry, the Church has been called worse.” Such anger is an uncommon experience in my work with migrants and people on the “periphery”. I did not really think much about it when he vented his anger at the world. Yet, when he apologized, it was a special moment of grace. I have seen the man several times on my walks, and since that first encounter, he has always been gracious, and always makes a point of greeting me.

We all can have “a bad day”, but when a person has the courage to apologize, it is a “good day.” May we all have the courage to apologize when given the opportunity.

Acerca del Día del Trabajo

Mientras nos preparamos para el fin de semana anual del Día del Trabajo, invito a los lectores a reflexionar sobre el significado de este día. El impulso para reconocer el valor de los trabajadores en muchos de los fuentes de trabajo que han impulsado la economía de los Estados Unidos comenzó después de la Guerra Civil y el comienzo de la formación de sindicatos en la década de 1880. El Departamento de Trabajo de los EE. UU. identifica el reconocimiento de un día para celebrar el trabajo en lo siguiente:

El Día del Trabajo, que se celebra el primer lunes de septiembre, es una celebración anual de los logros sociales y económicos de los trabajadores estadounidenses. La festividad tiene sus raíces a fines del siglo XIX, cuando los activistas laborales presionaron para que se estableciera un feriado federal para reconocer las muchas contribuciones que los trabajadores han hecho a la fortaleza, la prosperidad y el bienestar de los Estados Unidos.

Al haber crecido en una familia de trabajadores ferroviarios, carpinteros y otros trabajadores sindicalizados, la importancia y el valor de los sindicatos que promueven y protegen la dignidad de los trabajadores se me inculcó a una edad temprana. Esta festividad reconocía el valor del trabajo, el patriotismo y el compromiso de los trabajadores con sus familias y su fe. Muchos de los hijos de trabajadores sindicalizados que yo conocía eran hijos de inmigrantes de primera y segunda generación. El Día del Trabajo no era sólo un día para reconocer a los trabajadores, sino también una celebración de la etnicidad y la fe. En la década de 1950 nos estábamos recuperando de dos guerras mundiales y la gran depresión. El Día del Trabajo también era un día de patriotismo.

Cuando era niño en la década de 1950, el día también marcaba el final de las vacaciones de verano. La escuela comenzaba al día siguiente. Tal vez fue la transición de pasar de las vacaciones de verano a volver a la escuela lo que hizo que el día fuera un poco más especial que otros días. Era un día para celebrar el trabajo, para olvidarse del trabajo y disfrutar de un día con la familia y los amigos.

Hoy, es fácil dejar pasar el día, sin tomarse un tiempo para honrar al trabajador. Para muchas personas, es sólo otro día de trabajo, en lugar de un día libre, un día para la familia. Muchas personas trabajan en tiendas de conveniencia, restaurantes, campos de golf, complejos turísticos, centros de atención médica y administran servicios utilizados por muchos que celebran la festividad. Tómese un tiempo este día para honrar verdaderamente el trabajo y los sacrificios de los trabajadores que hoy contribuyen a la fortaleza, la prosperidad y el bienestar de esta nación.

About Labor Day

As we prepare for the annual Labor Day Weekend, I invite readers to reflect on the meaning of this day. Impetus for recognizing the value of workers in many of the trades that have moved the economy of the United States began after the Civil War and the beginning of the formation of labor unions in the 1880’s. The U.S. Department of Labor identifies the recognition of a Day to celebrate labor in the following:

Observed the first Monday in September, Labor Day is an annual celebration of the social and economic achievements of American workers. The holiday is rooted in the late nineteenth century, when labor activists pushed for a federal holiday to recognize the many contributions workers have made to America’s strength, prosperity, and well-being.

Growing up in a family of railroad workers, carpenters and other unionized laborers, the importance and value of unions promoting and protecting the dignity of laborers was impressed on me at an early age. This holiday recognized the value of labor, patriotism and the commitment of workers to their families and faith. Many of the children of union workers that I knew were first- and second-generation children of immigrants. Labor Day was not only a day to recognize the workers, but also a celebration of ethnicity and faith. In the 1950’s we were recovering from two world wars and the great depression. Labor Day was also a day of patriotism.

As a child in the 1950’s, the day also marked the end of summer vacation. School began the next day. Perhaps it was the transition of moving from summer vacation to returning to school that made the day a little more special than other days. It was a day to celebrate labor, to forget work and enjoy a day with family and friends.

Today, it is easy to let the day pass, without taking time to honor the laborer. For many people, it is just another day at work, rather than a day off, a day for family. Many people work at convenience stores, restaurants, golf courses, resorts, health care facilities and run services used by many who are celebrating the holiday. Take time this day to truly honor the work and sacrifices of laborers today who contribute to the strength, prosperity and well-being of this nation.

La fecha oficial de publicación de “Walk with My People, Camina con mi pueblo” es el 1 de septiembre, pero ya están disponibles para ordenar en: liguori.org. Hoy voy a visitar Liguori Publications para recoger libros y aprender cómo promover el libro y cómo no hacerlo.

Es un equilibrio delicado que espero promover en el libro. El libro es una memoria de más de treinta años de trabajo con emigrantes, refugiados y trabajadores migrantes. Cuento historias de los migrantes con los que he caminado y considero las alegrías y las penas de este ministerio. No se trata de políticas, datos de inmigración, leyes y aplicación de la ley. Simplemente invito a las personas a estar abiertas a aprender y conocer a las personas que viven al margen de la sociedad y de la Iglesia. Jesús dijo: “Cuando era forastero, me acogieron”.

En Caritas in Veritate, el Papa Benedicto XVI dijo que responder a la migración global es responsabilidad de todo el mundo. Y el Papa Francisco dice que tenemos que llevar nuestra fe a las periferias, a todo el mundo. Que Dios bendiga a todos los migrantes y a quienes caminan con ellos.

Today, I will visit Liguori Publications to pick up books and to learn about how to and not to promote the book. 

It is a delicate balance that I hope to promote in the book. The book is a memoir of over thirty years working with emigrants, refugees and migrant workers. I tell stories of the migrants with whom I have walked, and consider the joys and heartaches of this ministry. It is not about policies, immigration data, law and enforcement of law. I simply invite people to be open to learning about and meeting people on the margins of society and the Church. Jesus said, “When I was a stranger, you welcomed me.”

In Caritas in Veritate, Pope Benedict XVI says that responding to global migration is the responsibility of all people. And Pope Francis says that we need to take our faith to the peripheries, to all people. May God bless all migrants and those walking with them.

Este dicho es duro

En el evangelio de hoy, los primeros discípulos respondieron a lo que Jesús les dijo en el evangelio de la semana pasada: “Si no comen la carne del Hijo del hombre y no beben su sangre, no podrán tener vida en ustedes.” (Jn 6,53). Dijeron: “Este modo de hablar es intolerable, ¿quién puede admitir eso?” (Jn 6,60). Era tan duro que sólo quedaron los Apóstoles. El misterio de Jesús dándonos su cuerpo y su sangre para comer y beber, lo reconocemos hoy en la Eucaristía. Nuestra presencia en la Misa es un acto de fe aunque el misterio sea duro.

Me pregunto cuántas otras cosas dijo Jesús que a la gente de hoy le resultan demasiado difíciles de aceptar, como “Ama a tus enemigos”, “Perdona” una y otra vez, y “cuando era forastero, me recibieron”. Responder a los desafíos que plantea la migración global hoy es difícil, pero no se resolverán con ira, odio, miedo y culpando a los maltratados y difamados por nuestros problemas con la migración global.

Necesitamos reconocer a Jesús en el “hambriento, el sediento, el extranjero…” Acerquémonos al altar del Señor para recibir la gracia necesaria para responder mejor a los desafíos de la migración global. Sus palabras sobre amar, perdonar y acoger al extranjero requieren nuestra atención. Cuidar a los demás puede ser un inconveniente, pero no es duro.

This saying is hard

In today´s gospel, the early disciples responded to what Jesus told them in last weeks gospel, “Unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you do not have life within you”(Jn 6:53). They said, “This saying is hard; who can accept it?” (Jn 6:60) It was so hard that only the Apostles remained. The mystery of Jesus giving us his body and his blood to eat and drink, we recognize today in the Eucharist. Our presence in the Mass is an act of faith even though the mystery is hard.

I wonder how many other things Jesus said that people today find too hard to accept, such as “Love your enemies.” “Forgive” over and over. And “When I was a stranger, you welcomed me.” Responding to the challenges posed by global migration today is difficult, but they will not be solved by anger, hate, fear and blaming the abused and maligned for our problems with global migration.

We need to recognize Jesus in the “hungry, the thirsty, the stranger…” Let us approach he altar of the Lord for the grace needed to better respond to the challenges of global migration. His words about loving, forgiving and welcoming the stranger need our attention. Care for others may be inconvenient, but it is not hard.

Una observación de mi hermana

Durante el fin de semana visité a mis hermanas en Omaha. Tres de ellos recibieron copias de mi libro y, como la primera en leerlo, una escribió: “Mientras leo el libro, no puedo evitar pensar en papá. Él era un gran defensor de los desvalidos”. Eso es muy cierto en el caso de nuestro papá. Se sentía ofendido por cualquier signo de racismo. Al vivir la Gran Depresión, conoció la pobreza y nunca olvidó el maltrato que sufrió su padre como inmigrante católico irlandés. El comentario de mi hermana terminó: “A él le encantaría esto”. Ciertamente eso espero.

My sister´s observation

Over the weekend, I visited my sisters in Omaha. Three of them received copies of my book, and as the first to receive the book, one wrote: “As I read the book, I cannot help but think of Dad. He was such a supporter of the underdog.” That is so true of our Dad. He was offended by any signs of racism. Living through the Great Depression, he knew poverty and he never forgot mistreatment his father experienced as an Irish Catholic immigrant. My sister’s comment ended, “He would love this.” I certainly hope so.

¿Por qué Padre Migrante?

(Extracto de la Introducción de “Camina con mi Pueblo”.)

Soy un misionero redentorista, un sacerdote migrante, un “Padre Migrante.”  Considere al apóstol Pablo. Después de años de evangelizar a muchas naciones en la región del mar Mediterráneo, habló de su ministerio: “Yo planté, Apolo regó, pero Dios hizo crecer. Y no cuentan ni el que planta, ni el que riega sino Dios que hace crecer”. (1 Corintios 3:6-7) Pablo sembró la semilla, el mensaje de Jesús, dondequiera que iba. Proclamó el mensaje en un lugar y pasó a plantar la semilla en otra parte. Otros organizaron y establecieron la Iglesia en Corinto, Tesalónica, Galacia, y otros lugares. Apolo fue el sacerdote y obispo de Corinto que cultivó la semilla que plantó Pablo. Pablo era el sembrador. Apolo fue el pastor.

Soy sembrador. Camino con personas al margen de la sociedad y de la Iglesia. La mayor parte de mi vida como misionero ha sido con trabajadores migrantes. Sin embargo, mi experiencia como sacerdote trabajando con migrantes no comenzó en la frontera. Comenzó con las palabras del P. Juan Manuel Lasso de la Vega y Miranda, al aceptar su elección como superior general de la Congregación del Santísimo Redentor en 1985. Dijo que nosotros, los Redentoristas, estamos “llamados a evangelizar y ser evangelizados por los pobres”. En ese momento yo era director de vocaciones de la Provincia Redentorista de San Luis. Mi introducción al ministerio con migrantes y sus familias comenzó como un llamado no sólo a evangelizar, sino a permitir ser evangelizado por personas que participan en el fenómeno de la migración global.

Disfruté y estoy orgulloso del trabajo que he realizado en el ministerio migrante, pero muchas veces después de terminar un proyecto o programa, no hay ningún establecimiento religioso que continúe. Los lugares donde sembré semillas están dentro de las páginas de este libro, pero Casa San Alfonso ya no existe. Sus efectos perduran en las personas que aprecian las experiencias de la Casa. El equipo misionero bilingüe terminó cuando me mudé a trabajar a Liberal, Kansas. Sin embargo, muchos de los que sirvieron en las misiones conmigo siguen involucrados en los ministerios de la Iglesia hoy. La parroquia de San Antonio en Liberal tiene la iglesia que construimos los Redentoristas y los recuerdos de nuestro ministerio todavía inspiran a muchos. El ministerio campesino continúa en Fresno y avanza gracias al carisma y la organización de otros.

Muchos trabajadores migrantes son olvidados, desapercibidos y carentes de atención espiritual. Se mudan con frecuencia y rara vez tienen un lugar al que pueden llamar hogar. Durante la pandemia de COVID-19, se les llamó “trabajadores esenciales”. Muchos trabajadores migrantes sufrieron enfermedades graves y la pérdida de sus seres queridos. La preocupación por ellos se ha visto eclipsada, como un eclipse del sol, por el desorden migratorio en la frontera entre los Estados Unidos y México y las crisis en todo el mundo.

Invito a otros a caminar con migrantes, refugiados y todos aquellos a quienes el Papa Francisco dice que están en las “periferias”. Aquí hay historias y principios de acompañamiento a migrantes que me han guiado como sembrador. Ya sea usted un Pablo o un Apolo, que pueda crear su propio camino con los migrantes y todas las personas de la periferia.

Why Padre Migrante?

(Excerpt from the Introduction of “Walk with my People.”)

I am a Redemptorist missionary, a migrant priest, a “Padre Migrante.” Consider the Apostle Paul. After years of evangelizing to many nations near the Mediterranean Sea, he spoke of his ministry: “I planted, Apollos watered, but God caused the growth. Therefore, neither the one who plants, nor the one who waters is anything, but only God, who causes the growth” (1 Cor. 3:6–7). Paul sowed the seed, the message of Jesus, wherever he went. He proclaimed the message in one place and then moved on to plant the seed elsewhere. Others organized and established churches in such places as Corinth, Thessalonica, Galatia and other nations. Apollos was the bishop of Corinth who cultivated the seed Paul planted. Paul was the sower and Apollos was the pastor. 

I am a sower, a sembrador. I walk with people on the fringes of society and the Church. Most of my missionary work has been with migrant workers. However, my experience as a priest working with migrants did not begin at the border. It began with the words of Fr. Juan Manuel Lasso de la Vega y Miranda, CSsR, when he accepted his election as Superior General of the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer (the Redemptorists) in 1985. He said we are called to evangelize and to be evangelized by the poor. At the time, I was the vocation director for the St. Louis Province of Redemptorists. My entry into ministry with migrants and their families began as a call not only to evangelize, but to allow myself to be evangelized by people who are participants in the phenomenon of global migration. 

I enjoyed and am proud of the work that I have done in migrant ministry, but often after I finish a project or a program, there is no religious establishment that continues. The places where I sowed seeds are within the pages of this book, but Casa San Alfonso no longer exists. Its effects live on in the people who cherish the experiences of the Casa. The Bilingual Mission Team ended when I moved on to work in Liberal, Kansas. Many of those who served on the missions with me are engaged in ministries of the Church today. The parish of St. Anthony´s in Liberal has the church that we Redemptorists built, and the memories of our ministry still inspire many. Campesino ministry continues in Fresno, and it moves forward on the charisma and organization of others. 

Many migrant workers are forgotten, unnoticed, and lacking in spiritual care. They move frequently, seldom having a place to call home. During the COVID-19 pandemic, they were called “essential workers.” Many migrant workers suffered serious illness and the loss of loved ones. Concern for them has been overshadowed, like an eclipse of the sun, by the migration turmoil at the United States and Mexico border and crises around the world. 

I invite others to walk with migrants, refugees, and all the people whom Pope Francis says are “on the peripheries.” Collected in “Walk with My People” are stories and principles for accompaniment of migrants that have guided me as a sower of the seed. Whether you be a Paul or an Apollos, may you create your own camino (path) with migrants and all people on the periphery.

Gracias a los migrantes

Ayer agradecí a mis hermanos Redentoristas por su apoyo a lo largo de los años mientras caminaba con los migrantes. Son dignos del agradecimiento que se les ha dado, pero los más importantes son aquellos a quienes reconocí en el primer párrafo de la página de agradecimientos de mi libro, los migrantes. Aquí está su reconocimiento:

Agradezco a todos los migrantes que me han acompañado y me han permitido acompañarlos mientras buscamos vivir el único mandamiento que Jesús dio a sus seguidores: “Ámense unos a otros, como yo los he amado”. Ha sido un privilegio para mí caminar con los migrantes durante los últimos treinta y cinco años. Su bondad, amor y fe siempre se han manifestado en los éxitos y luchas del ministerio con el pueblo de la periferia de la sociedad y de la Iglesia.

Realmente es un privilegio caminar con personas difamadas, ignoradas y oprimidas. Cuando se les dio la oportunidad, los jóvenes de Casa San Alfonso crearon una familia de apoyo para jóvenes migrantes en un barrio difícil de Denver. Los trabajadores migrantes en restaurantes, hoteles y otros trabajos relacionados con el turismo me presentaron a trabajadores que a menudo pasan desapercibidos en el ministerio religioso. Muchos trabajadores migrantes mostraron gran fe entre las personas que trabajan en la agricultura, en rastros de carne, lecherías, la construcción y muchos trabajos de mantenimiento.

Entre los migrantes, he llegado a comprender nuestro llamado redentorista a “evangelizar y ser evangelizados por los pobres”.

Thanking migrants

Yesterday, I thanked my Redemptorist confreres for their support over the years as I have walked with migrants. They are worthy of the thanks given them, but most important are those whom I recognized in first paragraph of the acknowledgments page of my book, the migrants. Here is their acknowledgement:

I thank all migrants who have accompanied me and allowed me to accompany them as we seek to live the one commandment Jesus gave to his followers, “Love one another, as I have loved you.” It has been my privilege to walk with migrants for the past thirty-five years. Their goodness, love and faith has always shown through in the successes and struggles of ministry with people on the periphery of society and the Church. 

It truly is a privilege to walk with people who are maligned, ignored and oppressed. When given the opportunity, the youth of Casa San Alfonso created a supportive family for young immigrants in a tough barrio of Denver. Migrant workers in restaurants, hotels and other work related to tourism introduced me to workers often unnoticed in religious ministry. Many immigrant workers showed great faith among people working in agriculture, meat packing, dairies, construction and many maintenance jobs.

Amongst migrants, I have come to understand our Redemptorist calling to “evangelize and to be evangelized by the poor.”
