Progreso en un nuevo libro.

El Padre Migrante está aprendiendo más sobre publicaciones de lo que jamás supe. Agradezco a Raúl y María quienes me ayudaron en Fresno a publicar “La Fe del Migrante”. Fue una obra de amor que publicamos en poco tiempo. Creo que hicimos un buen trabajo y es hora de una secuela. Unos cinco años después de escribir “La Fe del Migrante”, comencé a considerar un segundo libro. Durante COVID en 2020, comencé el sitio web Padre Migrante y comencé a escribir un blog casi a diario. Siempre pensé que algún día sería bueno repasar esos blogs como base para un nuevo libro.

Después de 500 blogs, comencé a recopilar material, pero seguí posponiéndolo hasta octubre de 2023. Hace unas cinco semanas, comencé a enviar algunos borradores para que la gente los revisara. Ha sido muy alentador tener a mucha gente comentando, haciendo sugerencias y editando intensamente mi material. La semana pasada estaba casi listo para enviar mi documento, pero hubo dos recomendaciones excelentes más de los lectores de los borradores anteriores.

Creo que estaré listo para enviar mi libro a las publicaciones de Liguori el miércoles. Estoy preparando el último borrador esperando tener un documento final para que los traductores preparen el texto en español.

El título es: Camina con Mi Pueblo.

He escrito blogs antes sobre el ministerio con migrantes. Cuento muchas historias sobre mis experiencias en el ministerio. Oren por una finalización exitosa de este proyecto que ha ocupado gran parte de mi atención durante los últimos meses.

Progress on a new book

Padre Migrante is learning more about publishing than I ever knew. I thank Raul and Maria who helped me in Fresno publish “Migrant Faith”. It was a work of love that we put together in a short time. I think that we did a good job on it, and it is time for a sequel. About five years after writing Migrant Faith, I began considering a second book. During COVID in 2020, I began the Padre Migrante website and began writing an almost daily blog. I always thought that it would be good to someday go over those blogs as a foundation for a new book.

After 500 blogs, I started gathering material, but kept putting it off until around October 2023. About five weeks ago, I began sending out some drafts for people to review. It has been very encouraging having many people commenting, making suggestions and doing some heavy editing of my material. Last week, I was almost ready to submit my document, but there were two more excellent recommendations from readers of the earlier drafts.

I think that I will be ready to submit my book to Liguori publications on Wednesday. I am preparing the last draft looking forward to having a final document for translators to prepare the Spanish text.

The title is: Walk with My People.

I have written blogs before about migrant ministry. I tell many stories about my experiences in the ministry. Pray for a successful completion of this project that has taken up much of my attention for the past couple months.

Migrantes: gente de la periferia

Cada cristiano y cada comunidad debe discernir el camino que el Señor nos señala, pero todos estamos llamados a obedecer su llamada a salir de nuestra propia zona de confort para llegar a todas las “periferias” necesitadas de la luz del Evangelio. (Papa Francisco, La alegría del Evangelio, 20)

¿Qué significa estar en la periferia? Significa pasar desapercibido, al margen de la sociedad, al margen, viviendo en las sombras. Cuando las personas pasan desapercibidas, es fácil ignorarlas. Al no reconocer su presencia, la vida ordinaria de las comunidades parroquiales puede dejarlos en la periferia. Hoy en día, los migrantes aparecen en las portadas de los periódicos, pero en el ministerio de la Iglesia suelen estar en la periferia.

En la encíclica, Caritas in veritate, el Papa Benedicto XVI afirma que la migración internacional es un “fenómeno social que marca época, que requiere una fuerte y clarividente política de cooperación internacional para afrontarlo debidamente”. Su complejidad desafía a las instituciones políticas, la economía, la seguridad, la fe y las familias. Entendió que no se podía esperar que ninguna nación abordara por sí sola los problemas actuales de la migración. Afirmó que todo migrante es una persona humana que, como tal, posee derechos fundamentales e inalienables que deben ser respetados por todos y en toda circunstancia. Y reconoció que el movimiento de personas no es únicamente un tema de migración. El turismo, la economía, la educación, la atención sanitaria, los problemas civiles, las guerras y los desastres naturales son factores que contribuyen a la migración mundial.

La Iglesia puede desempeñar un papel importante a la hora de abordar los desafíos que plantea la migración. Necesitamos ser audaces y creativos en nuestra respuesta a los migrantes, inmigrantes y refugiados. Este llamado a la cooperación internacional es urgente en este momento. El Papa Francisco señala en la Alegría del Evangelio que “las migraciones constituirán un elemento determinante del futuro del mundo”. Y nuestra respuesta no se trata de implementar programas de bienestar, sino de emprender un viaje junto con los migrantes del mundo. La migración de personas ha sido una constante en la historia de la humanidad, sin embargo, existen variaciones en la experiencia de los migrantes que ingresan a naciones y regiones de el mundo que son únicos para su tiempo y lugar.

Migrants: People on the Periphery

Each Christian and every community must discern the path that the Lord points out, but all of us are asked to obey his call to go forth from our own comfort zone in order to reach all the “peripheries” in need of the light of the Gospel. (Pope Francis, Joy of the Gospel, 20)

What does it mean to be on the periphery? It means to be unnoticed, on the fringes of society, on the margin, living in the shadows. When people are unnoticed, it is easy to ignore them. Since we do not recognize their presence, the ordinary life of parish communities may leave them on the periphery. Today, migrants are on the front pages of newspapers, but in Church ministry they are often on the periphery.

            In the Encyclical Caritas in Veritate, Pope Benedict XVI, states that international migration is a “social phenomenon of epoch-making proportions that requires bold, forward-looking policies of international cooperation if it is to be handled effectively.” It’s complexity challenges political institutions, economics, security, faith, and families. He understood that no nation could be expected to address today’s problems of migration by itself. He asserted that every migrant is a human person who, as such, possesses fundamental, inalienable rights that must be respected by everyone and in every circumstance. And he recognized that the movement of people is not solely an issue of migration. Tourism, economics, education, health care, civil distress, wars, and natural disasters are contributing factors to global migration.

            The Church can play an important role in addressing the challenges migration poses. We need to be bold and creative in our response to migrants, immigrants, and refugees. This call for international cooperation is urgent at this time. Pope Francis notes in the Joy of the Gospel that “Migrations, more than ever before, will play a pivotal role in the future of our world.” And our response is not a case of implementing welfare programs, but of undertaking a journey together with migrants of the world. The migration of people has been a constant in human history, yet there are variations in the experience of migrants entering nations and regions of the world that are unique to their time and place.

Como sacerdote que trabaja con migrantes, mi ministerio no comenzó en una frontera. Ni siquiera comenzó trabajando en el ministerio hispano. Yo era director de vocaciones para los Redentoristas de la Provincia de St. Louis, cuando en 1985, el P. Juan Lasso de la Vega, fue elegido Superior General de la Congregación del Santísimo Redentor. Su mensaje a la Congregación fue que los Redentoristas están “llamados a evangelizar y a ser evangelizados por los pobres”.

En 1989 comencé a considerar lo que esperaba hacer después del puesto de director vocacional. En ese momento, se animó a las Provincias Redentoristas a crear iniciativas en la pastoral juvenil. Junto con un sacerdote más joven, queríamos ofrecer un hogar seguro para los jóvenes de un barrio pobre de Denver. El 9 de noviembre de 1991 abrimos Casa San Alfonso como casa de acogida para los jóvenes del barrio. Los jóvenes de nuestra comunidad CSA eran de herencia hispana, casi todos ellos mismos emigrantes o hijos de emigrantes.

Utilizo el término emigrantes porque no hicimos distinción al ofrecer atención si estaban legalmente presentes o indocumentados. Permítanme definir dos términos:

Un migrante es una persona que se muda de un lugar a otro, especialmente para encontrar trabajo o mejores condiciones de vida. Un migrante puede ser un ciudadano, un inmigrante legal o un ciudadano extranjero no inspeccionado.

Un emigrante es una persona que abandona su país de origen para establecerse en otro lugar. Quien se encuentre legalmente presente podrá ser inmigrante, como residente o ciudadano naturalizado.

Fue en la Casa San Alfonso, donde comencé mi trabajo con migrantes, emigrantes, inmigrantes y sus familias.

Migration Ministry does not begin at the border

As a priest working with migrants, my ministry did not begin at a border. It did not even begin by working in Hispanic ministry. I was vocation director for the Redemptorists of the St. Louis Province, when in 1985, Fr. Juan Lasso de la Vega, was elected Superior General of the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer. His message to the Congregation was that Redemptorists are “called to evangelize and to be evangelized by the poor.”

In 1989 I began considering what I hoped to do after the vocation director position. At the time, Redemptorist Provinces were encouraged to create initiatives in youth ministry. Along with a younger confrere, we wanted to provide a safe house for young people in a poor barrio in Denver. On November 9, 1991, we opened Casa San Alfonso as a house of welcome for young people in the barrio. The young people of our CSA community were of Hispanic heritage, almost all emigrants themselves or children of emigrants.

I use the term emigrants because we made no distinction in offering care if they were legally present or undocumented. Let me define two terms:

A migrant is a person who moves from one place to another, especially in order to find work or better living conditions. A migrant may be a citizen, a legal immigrant, or an uninspected foreign national.

An emigrant is a person who leaves his country of origin to establish oneself in another place. One who is legally present may be an immigrant, as resident or naturalized citizen

It was at Casa San Alfonso, where I began my work with migrants, emigrants, immigrants and their families.

Time to reconnect / Es hora de volver a conectar

Es hora de volver a conectar

Han pasado tres semanas desde mi último blog para el Padre Migrante. Necesitaba un descanso. No lo planeé, pero estoy listo para comenzar los blogs nuevamente. Durante los últimos tres años, he escrito más de setecientos blogs. Algunos de ustedes recordarán que en más de una ocasión escribí sobre mi esperanza de escribir un libro. Durante COVID, intenté dos veces ordenar mis pensamientos para un libro. Escribí en 2020 y 2021 que quería escribir una secuela de mi primer libro, La Fe del Migrante. Incluso le puse un título: Camina con mi pueblo. El título vino del P. Enrique López, un sacerdote que fue mi mentor cuando comencé a trabajar en el Ministerio Hispano.

En el otoño, en mi trabajo con la Red Católica Campesino Migrante, dirigí un taller sobre el tema “acompañamiento”. La palabra tiene un significado especial en el Ministerio Hispano. En el Plan Pastoral Nacional para el Ministerio Hispano, la palabra aparece casi 80 veces en un documento de sesenta páginas. Fue un concepto que el P. López repetía constantemente. Honestamente, si usara esa palabra, probablemente nunca tendría el impacto de su afirmación: “Si no caminas con mi pueblo, no te molestes en aprender español”.

“Camina con mi pueblo” ha sido un mantra para mí. El ministerio hispano no es solo predicar o enseñar. No es solamente ayudar a las personas en crisis ni de prepararlas para los sacramentos. El ministerio hispano se trata de entablar una relación. Caminar con migrantes, emigrantes, inmigrantes y sus familias es mi vida, y ahora estoy a punto de completar mi libro.

Quizás se pregunten sobre la distinción que hago sobre quiénes son mi pueblo como migrantes, emigrantes, inmigrantes y sus familias. Puede parecer técnico, pero entender mal quiénes son estas personas permite que personas de corazón endurecido nos manipulen emocionalmente. Los próximos días, abordaré cada uno de estos, para que cuando mi libro se imprima, usted pueda tener la curiosidad de considerar caminar con mi gente.

Mi libro todavía tiene algunos obstáculos, pero estoy listo para superarlos. Le haré saber si se imprime y cuándo. Agradezco a todas las personas que me han ayudado en el camino.

Time to reconnect

It has been three weeks since my last blog for Padre Migrante. I needed a break. I did not plan it, but I am ready to begin the blogs again. Over the past three years, I have written over seven hundred blogs. Some of you may recall that on more than one occasion, I wrote about my hope to write a book. During COVID, I made an attempt twice to get my thoughts together for a book. I wrote in 2020 and 2021 that I wanted to write a sequel to my first book, Migrant Faith. I even had a title for it, Walk with My People. The title came from Fr. Enrique Lopez, a priest who was a mentor to me, as I began to work in Hispanic Ministry.

In the Fall, in my work with Catholic Migrant Farmworker Network, I led a workshop on the theme of “Accompaniment”. The word has a special significance in Hispanic Ministry. In the National Pastoral Plan for Hispanic Ministry, the word appears almost 80 times in a sixty-page document. It was a concept that Fr. Lopez constantly repeated. Honestly if he used that word, it probably would never have the impact of his statement, “If you don’t walk with my people, don’t bother to learn Spanish.”

Walk with my people has been a mantra for me. Hispanic ministry is not about preaching or teaching. It is not about helping people in crisis or preparing people for the sacraments. Hispanic ministry is about entering a relationship. Walking with migrants, emigrants, immigrants and their families is my life, and now I am about to complete my book.

You may wonder about the distinction that I make about who are my people as migrants, emigrants, immigrants and their families. It may sound technical, but misunderstanding who these people are allows us to be manipulated emotionally by people of hardened hearts. The next few day, I will address each of these, so that when my book does go to press, you may be curious enough to consider walking with my people.

My book still has some hurdles, but I am ready to jump those hurdles. I will let you know if and when it goes to print. I thank all the people who have helped me along the way.

Una nueva aventura para el Padre Migrante

En junio, el Instituto de Estudios Pastorales de la Universidad de Loyola Chicago y la Red Católica de Campesinos Migrantes ofrecerán un programa por una semana de capacitación para líderes religiosos en el Ministerio Campesino. Nuestro foro es para personas que brindan atención pastoral a migrantes e inmigrantes que viven y trabajan en comunidades agrícolas. Como parte de mi preparación para este foro, espero publicar una secuela del libro La Fe del Migrante. He escrito muchos blogs sobre mi camino con los migrantes, especialmente aquellos que trabajan en pueblos pequeños y comunidades agrícolas. Publicaré en los blogs del Padre Migrante que pueden ser recordado a los lectores regulares. Aquí hay una muestra de mi nueva empresa.

El ministerio con los migrantes no fue una parte importante de mis primeros años como sacerdote. Pasé dos veranos enseñando catecismo en campamentos de migrantes, una vez en Idaho y otra vez en Wisconsin. En mi primera asignación, había pocos inmigrantes hispanos en la parroquia. Fueron quince años antes de mi introducción al ministerio con migrantes.

Diez años después de aprender español, pasé dos veranos en The Dalles, Oregón, ocupando el lugar de un sacerdote que se fue a estudiar español. Cada tarde celebré misa en diferentes campamentos de inmigrantes durante la cosecha de cerezas. El segundo verano, pregunté a la gente: “Si vuelvo el próximo verano, ¿qué podría hacer por ustedes más que las misas en el campamento?”. Una mujer tocó una fibra sensible. Ella dijo: “No necesitamos que usted sea nuestro abogado o trabajador social. Necesitamos que sea nuestro sacerdote”.

En otra misa, un campesino dijo: “Es más fácil para nosotros recibir ayuda de la Iglesia para alimentos, consejo sobre inmigración y otros servicios sociales que para nuestros hijos recibir su Primera Comunión”. Los trabajadores inmigrantes me dieron una idea de las dificultades que tienen los migrantes para obtener los servicios básicos y ordinarios de la Iglesia.

(Nuestro ministerio católico a los campesinos migrantes es inconsistente. Podemos hacerlo mejor).

A New Adventure for Padre Migrante

In June, the University of Loyola Chicago Institute for Pastoral Studies and the Catholic Migrant Farmworker Network will offer week training program for religious leaders in Farmworker Ministry. Our forum is for people providing pastoral care for migrants and immigrants living and working in agricultural communities. As part of my preparation for the coming forum, I hope to publish a sequel to the book, Migrant Faith. I have written many blogs about my journey with migrants, especially those who work in small towns and agricultural communities. I will post on the Padre Migrante blogs that may appear familiar to long time readers. Here is a sample from my new venture.

Migration Ministry

Ministry with migrants was not a significant part of my early years as a priest. I spent two summers teaching catechism in migrant camps, once in Idaho and once in Wisconsin. In my first assignment, there were very few Hispanic immigrants in our parish. It was fifteen years before, my introduction to migrant ministry began.

Ten years after I learned Spanish, I spent two summers in The Dalles, Oregon, taking the place of a priest who went away to study Spanish. Each evening, I celebrated Mass in different migrant camps during the cherry harvest. The second summer, I asked the people, “If I return next summer, what could I do for you more than the camp Masses.” One woman struck a nerve. She said, “We don’t need you to be our lawyer or social worker. We need you to be our priest.”

At another Mass, a farm worker said, “It is easier for us to receive assistance from the Church for food, immigration counsel, and other social services than for our children to receive their First Communion.” The migrant workers gave me a glimpse into the difficulties migrants have obtaining basic, ordinary services of the Church.

(Our Catholic outreach to migrant farm workers is inconsistent. We can do better.)

Oh Jesús, tú nos llamas: “Síganme”. Bendice, Señor, a todos los que acogen tu llamado. Puede que el camino no sea fácil, pero tenemos la confianza de que todo es posible si caminamos contigo. Que este viaje nos abra los ojos a las maravillas de tu amor por nosotros. Oramos por toda tu gente, por todos los creyentes e incrédulos, por los líderes y seguidores. Oramos por la sanación, el perdón, la compasión, la justicia y la paz. Oramos para que, al seguirte, nosotros también podamos ser pescadores de hombres. Bendícenos en nuestro viaje.

O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
