Called Padre / Llamado Padre

Llamado Padre

Called Padre

I was called “Padre” before I began working with migrants in 1991 at Casa San Alfonso in Denver. I was called “Padre” by my teammates on the Wichita Wheathawks in 1974. After a few weeks in my first assignment as an associate pastor at St. Joseph’s parish in Wichita, two former seminarians invited me to join a soccer team that they had just begun, the Wheathawks. They assured the Mexicans on the team that “Padre could play.” In my first game, I scored three goals, and around the league, I was simply known as “Padre”. I do not think that everyone really knew that I was a priest. It could have simply been a nickname.

Last week, we had a celebration of the team’s fifty-year anniversary, with a golf outing and an evening together with members of the club from its beginning in 1974 to present members. It was great seeing everyone and on Sunday morning, those from the 1974 team went for breakfast. Wearing my collar at the breakfast was the first time many saw me as a priest, I was just “Padre”. Fifty years later, it looked like we could still play.

O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.

We do not earn grace / No merecemos el amor de Dios All you who labor / A todos los que trabajan
