(Considerando la Misión Redentorista en Cicero, IL, del 5 al 11 de abril)

Renovando SU relación con Jesús

El tema de nuestra misión es: “Renueva su relación con Jesús”. Prepararme para esta misión ha sido una jornada personal, que me ha permitido reflexionar no solo sobre los temas de la misión, sino también considerar mi participación en misiones parroquiales durante los últimos cincuenta años. Desde 2020, la mayor parte de mi predicación misionera ha sido más breve, en forma de conferencias sobre un tema o un desafío actual en una comunidad. Se las podría haber llamado “mini-misiones”. Participar en una misión de siete días, desde su inicio el 5 de abril hasta su cierre el 11 de abril, es un momento para examinar nuestra relación personal y comunitaria con Dios.

¿Es nuestra fe demasiado personal? ¿Es demasiado individual? ¿Es egocéntrica en lugar de incluir a todas las criaturas y la creación de Dios? Renovar SU relación con Jesús es tanto personal como comunitario. Invitamos a los participantes de esta misión a preguntarse: “¿Cómo puedo renovar MI relación con Jesús? ¿Y cómo podemos nosotros renovar NUESTRA relación con Jesús?” Nuestra misión es un momento para renovar nuestra relación personal y nuestra relación eclesial con Jesús. En la liturgia del Viernes Santo, oramos por la Iglesia universal. Nuestra oración incluye orar por nuestros líderes religiosos, todos los fieles, todos los ritos dentro de la Iglesia, todos los catecúmenos, todos los cristianos, aquellos que creen en Dios pero no en Jesús, y aquellos que aún no han escuchado la buena nueva del Evangelio.

La conversión personal es un paso importante hacia la membresía en la Iglesia, pero si solo se centra en una relación personal con Jesús, puede ser un camino de fe solitario. Reconocer a Jesús en los marginados, reconocerlo en la periferia, es el acto por el cual no solo se juzgará a las personas, sino también a las naciones. Durante muchos años, cuando se proclamaba el Evangelio de Mateo, capítulo veinticinco, en las misas, hablaba de la responsabilidad individual de cuidar a los pobres, los hambrientos, los sedientos y los extranjeros. Sin embargo, cuando Jesús comenzó la parábola, las ovejas y los chivos no representaban a los creyentes individuales. Sobre el juicio, dice: «Todas las naciones serán llevadas a su presencia, y separará a unos de otros, al igual que el pastor separa las ovejas de los chivos» (Mt. 25,32).

Para la Jornada Mundial del Migrante y del Refugiado 2024, el Papa Francisco comenzó su mensaje diciendo: «Dios camina con su pueblo». Camina con cada una de sus criaturas. Su amor por nosotros es personal y comunitario. Para Dios, la fe personal y comunitaria son una sola cosa. No pueden separarse. Renovemos nuestra relación con Jesús.

Renewing YOUR relationship with Jesus

The theme of our mission is: “Renew your relationship with Jesus.” Preparing for this mission has been a personal journey for me to reflect not only on the themes of the mission, but to consider my participation in parish missions over the past fifty years. Since 2020, most of my mission preaching has been of a shorter variety, more in the form of conferences on a theme or a present challenge in a community. They may better have been called, “mini-missions”. Participation in a mission of seven days, from it’s opening on April 5 to its closing on April 11 is a time to examine our personal and communal relationship with God.

Is our faith too personal? Is it too individual? Is it self-centered rather than inclusive of all of God’s creatures and creation? Renewing YOUR relationship with Jesus is both personal and communal. We invite participants in this mission to ask of themselves “How can I renew MY relationship with Jesus? and How can WE renew OUR relationship with Jesus.” Our mission is a time for a renewal of our personal relationship and our Church relationship with Jesus. In our liturgy for Good Friday, we pray for the Church universal. Our prayer includes praying for our religious leaders, all the faithful, all rites within the Church, all catechumens, all Christians, those who believe in God but not in Jesus, and those who have not yet heard the good news of the Gospel.

Personal conversion is an important step towards membership in the Church, but if it only focuses on a personal relationship with Jesus, it can be a lonely journey. Recognizing Jesus in the outcast, recognizing him on the periphery is the act on which not only individuals will be judged, but nations will be judged. For many years, when the gospel of Matthew, chapter twenty-five is proclaimed at Masses, I spoke about individual responsibility to care for the poor, the hungry, the thirsty and the stranger, but when Jesus began the parable, the sheep and the goats did not represent individual believers. He says about the judgment, “all the nations will be assembled before him. And he will separate them one from another, as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats.” (Mt. 25:32)

For World Day of Migrants and Refugees 2024, Pope Francis began his message saying, “God walks with his people.” He walks with each and every one of his creatures. His love for us is both personal and communal. For God, personal and communal faith are one and the same. They cannot be separated. Let us “Renew OUR relationship with Jesus.”

Misa Formal e Informal

La celebración de la Misa es un memorial de Jesús entregando su Cuerpo y Sangre a sus discípulos alrededor de una mesa durante la celebración de la Pascua. Eran Jesús y sus apóstoles. No era una Misa solemne. No se usaban vestimentas especiales. Era un grupo de hombres itinerantes celebrando la Pascua con su Maestro. Con fe, los Apóstoles tomaron el pan, ahora su cuerpo, y bebieron su sangre del cáliz. No hubo explicación ni meditación profunda sobre el significado de la transubstanciación. La iglesia primitiva celebraba la Eucaristía cuando se reunían para las oraciones y la fracción del pan.

Al acercarnos a la Semana Santa y a la celebración de los días solemnes de la Pasión, Muerte y Resurrección, celebraremos solemne y formalmente el misterio de la salvación. Me han preguntado: “¿Son todas las celebraciones de la Misa iguales?”. Teóricamente, todas son celebraciones de la presencia de Jesús en el misterio de la Eucaristía, pero personalmente hay momentos más intensos que otros.

Entiendo que las ceremonias de las grandes fiestas en iglesias con hermosa música y la participación de muchos fieles católicos tienen un significado especial. Cuando la misa forma parte de la celebración de los sacramentos de la Primera Eucaristía, la Confirmación, el Matrimonio, la Ordenación y la consagración de los difuntos en los funerales, estamos llamados a reconocer estos momentos especiales de gracia. Como sacerdote, todos estos son grandes momentos de celebración.

Sin embargo, cuando celebro la misa en un huerto, un viñedo, un garaje, una lechería, una prisión, una habitación de hospital o alrededor de cualquier mesa donde la gente se reúne para orar, es cuando me siento más cerca de Jesús y sus discípulos en el Cenáculo. Puede que no haya campanas, música, incienso ni siquiera velas, pero en el momento de la consagración, experimentamos la presencia de Jesús. Él les dijo a sus discípulos que hicieran esto en memoria suya, pues para muchas personas la Eucaristía puede llegar a ellos cuando no pueden ir a la iglesia.

Recibí una carta de un hombre de unos treinta y tantos años. Había pasado más de la mitad de su vida en carceles. Experimentó su conversión en prisión. Mis hermanos y yo lo vimos cada semana durante tres años. En su carta, nos agradeció a cada uno de nosotros por nuestro nombre por celebrar la misa todos los viernes y permitirle recibir el Cuerpo de Cristo. Anunció su liberación y, aunque ahora podría participar en misas en las iglesias, nunca olvidaría sus visitas de los viernes alrededor de una mesa plegable con nosotros y otros presos. Cada persona puede asistir a misas formales e informales. Dondequiera que se celebre la misa, honramos a Jesús con nosotros.

Formal and Informal Mass

The celebration of Mass is a memorial of Jesus giving his Body and Blood to his disciples around a table during the celebration of Passover. It was Jesus and his apostles. It was not a solemn Church Mass. There were no special vestments. It was an itinerant band of men celebrating Passover with their Teacher. In faith, the Apostles took the bread, now his body and drank his blood from the cup. There was no explanation, no deep meditation on the meaning of transubstantiation. The early church celebrated the Eucharist when they met for the prayers and the breaking of bread.

As we approach Holy Week and the celebration of the solemn days of the Passion, Death and Resurrection, we will celebrate solemnly and formally the mystery of salvation. I have been asked, “Are all celebrations of Mass the same?” Theoretically, they are all celebrations of Jesus presence in the mystery of the Eucharist, but personally there are moments that are more intense than others.

I understand that ceremonies of great feasts in churches with beautiful music, the active participation of many Catholic faithful hold a special meaning to many. When Mass is part of the celebration of sacraments of First Eucharist, Confirmation, Marriage, Ordination and commending the dearly departed in funerals, we are called to recognize these special moments of grace. As a priest, these are all great moments of celebration.

Yet, when I celebrate Mass in an orchard, a vineyard, a garage, a dairy, a prison, a hospital room or around any table where people gather to pray is when I feel closest to Jesus and his disciples in the upper room. There may not be the bells, the music, the incense and even the candles, but in the moment of consecration, we experience Jesus presence. He told his disciples to do this in memory of him, for many people the Eucharist may come to them when they cannot come to a church.

I received a letter from a man who was in his late thirties. He had spent more than half of his life in prisons. He experienced his conversion while in prison. I and my confreres saw him every week for three years. In his letter he thanked each of us by name for celebrating Mass every Friday and allowing him to receive the Body of Christ. He announced that he was being released, and while he would now be able to participate in Masses in churches, he would never forget his Friday visits with us around a folding table with us and fellow prisoners. Each and every person may experience formal and informal masses. Wherever Mass is celebrated, we honor Jesus with us.

Renueva su relación con Jesús

Este es el tema de una Misión Redentorista en Cicero, Illinois. Soy parte de un grupo de nueve predicadores redentoristas que ofrecerán misiones parroquiales en seis parroquias del 5 al 11 de abril. La misión se ofrecerá en varios idiomas. Creo que vamos a tener más redentoristas en el equipo antes de comenzar. Al reflexionar sobre la renovación de la relación con Jesús, necesitamos reconocer que el “su” es personal y comunitario.

A menudo, las personas buscan enriquecer su relación personal con Jesús, y lo hacemos mediante retiros, conferencias, oración y sacrificio. Sin embargo, nuestra misión, que se ofrece en seis parroquias contiguas, reconoce que donde dos o tres se reúnen en su nombre, Jesús está presente. Para tener una relación con Jesús, tenemos que reconocer su presencia. Hay dos pasajes bíblicos que sean reveladores. Cuando Jesús habló del juicio final en el Evangelio de Mateo (Mt. 25:31-46), no se refería a un reconocimiento individual o personal de Jesús en el hambriento, el sediento, el forastero, etc. Dijo que las “naciones” serían separadas como las ovejas de las cabras. Este es un juicio comunitario.

Y después de la Última Cena, se dirigió a sus apóstoles diciéndoles que les estaba dando un nuevo mandamiento: “Ámense unos a otros como yo los he amado.” Esto es personal para todos los creyentes. Nuestra misión es llamar a las personas a una relación personal con Jesús y a las comunidades eclesiales a una relación renovada con Jesús.

Renew Your Relationship with Jesus

This is the theme for a Redemptorist Mission in Cicero, IL. I am part of group of nine Redemptorist preachers who will offer parish missions in six parishes from April 5-11. The mission will be offered in several languages. I believe that there will be a couple more Redemptorists added to the team before we begin. As we reflect on renewing relationship with Jesus, we need to recognize the “your” as being personal and communal.

Often people seek to enrich their personal relationship with Jesus, and we do so in retreats, conferences, prayer and sacrifice. Yet our mission being offered in six parishes contiguous to each other is a recognition that where two or three are gathered in his name, Jesus is present. In order to have a relationship with Jesus, we must recognize his presence. There are two scriptures that I find especially revealing. When Jesus spoke about the final judgment in the gospel of Matthew (Mt. 25:31-46) he was not speaking of individual or personal recognition of Jesus in the hungry, the thirst, the stranger, etc. He said that the “nations” will be separate as sheep from the goats. This is a communal judgment.

And after the Last Supper, he addressed his Apostles saying that he was giving them a new commandment, “love one another as I have loved you.” That is personal for all believers. Our mission is to call individuals to personal relationship with Jesus and a call to church communities to a renewed relationship with Jesus.

Un recuerdo de 2007

En marzo de 2007, después de dieciséis años en el ministerio hispano, necesitaba un descanso de las frustraciones de caminar con los pobres. Mi Superior Provincial me dijo que me tomara un año sabático. Dijo que “descanse, juegue un poco de golf y no trabaje durante seis meses”. ¡Qué bendición! Pasé seis semanas visitando a las familias de personas que conocí de mis años en Denver, Oregón, y Liberal, Kansas. A mi regreso de México, participé en un programa sabático en Tucson, Arizona. Como parte del sabático, teníamos que escribir un poema basado en un a selección de las Escrituras. Me asignaron la siguiente selección.

2 Corintios 7: 2-4

“¡Hagan espacio para nosotros en sus corazones! No hemos herido a nadie, no hemos corrompido a nadie, no hemos engañado a nadie. No te condeno. Ya he dicho que estás en nuestros corazones, incluso para compartir la muerte y la vida juntos. Te hablo con total franqueza y me jacto mucho de ti. Estoy lleno de consuelo y, a pesar de mis muchas aflicciones, mi alegría no tiene límites “.

A Memory from 2007

In March of 2007, after sixteen years in Hispanic ministry, I needed a break from the frustrations of walking with the poor. My Provincial Superior told me to take a sabbatical. He said to “rest, play a little golf and don’t work for six months.” What a blessing. I spent six weeks visiting the families of people I knew from my years in Denver, Oregon, and Liberal, KS. On my return from Mexico, I participated in a sabbatical program in Tucson, AZ. As part of the program, we were to write a poem based on a selection from Scripture. I was assigned the following selection.

2 Corinthians 7:2-4

“Make room for us in your hearts!  We have injured no one, we have corrupted no one, we have cheated no one.  I do not condemn you.  I have already said that you are in our hearts, even to the sharing of death and life together.  I speak to you with utter frankness and boast much about you.  I am filled with consolation and despite my many afflictions my joy knows no bounds.”

Lord, you have come to me in a multitude.

Migrants touching my life

in many unseen ways.

Not only have you not injured me

or cheated me or condemned me.

You have taken me

into your humblest of homes.

You have fed me with the fruits of the earth

and spiced my life

with the salsa of your stories.

by the generosity of the poor.

Mañana participaré en un taller sobre “La Doctrina Social Católica y el Trabajo con Migrantes y Refugiados en Tiempos de Incertidumbre”. Este será mi segundo viaje a Washington, D. C. durante marzo. Catholic Social Teaching workshop

Tomorrow, I will participate in a workshop on ‘Catholic Social Teaching and Work with Migrants and Refugees at a Time of Uncertainty’. This will be my second trip to Washington, DC during the month of March. The event is sponsored by Jesuit Refugee Services and the Center for Migration Studies. It is timely. The two keynote speakers are: Cardinal Robert McElroy, Archbishop of Washington, DC, and Cardinal Fabio Baggio, CS, of the Vatican Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development.

Last year, preparing for the World Day of Migrants and Refugees, I studied many Papal Messages from 1915 to 2024. I studied all of the messages of Popes John Paul II, Benedict XVI and Francis. In this time of uncertainty, it is important that we study the development of Catholic teaching on migration.

Apoyando a los Migrantes

Incluyo la siguiente observación de Jesús de la Torre, del Hope Border Institute. Es una consideración que se relaciona bien con mi reflexión en la publicación de ayer. Esta fue parte de su blog del 20 de marzo.

Quien crea que lo que estamos viviendo se trata sólo de inmigración se equivoca. Cuando el Presidente invoca una autoridad de tiempos de guerra para hacer desaparecer a migrantes en las inhumanas prisiones de El Salvador con la única sentencia de una acusación gubernamental y desafiando las órdenes judiciales, lo que está en juego no es la política de inmigración, sino nuestro Estado de Derecho. Cuando el gobierno detiene y encarcela a migrantes y ciudadanos por igual debido a su raza u opiniones y amenaza con acorralar nuestras iglesias, escuelas y hospitales, lo que está en juego es nuestra libertad y convivencia como sociedad.

To Stand with Migrants

I include the following observation from Jesús de la Torre of Hope Border Institute. It is a consideration that relates well with my reflection in yesterday´s post. This was part of his blog from March 20.

Whoever believes this is only about immigration is wrong. When the president invokes a wartime authority to disappear migrants to El Salvador’s inhumane prisons without a shred of due process and in defiance of the courts, what is at stake is not immigration policy but the rule of law. When the government stops and detains migrants and citizens alike on the basis of race or conviction and threatens to round up human beings in our churches, schools and hospitals, what is at stake are core freedoms and the bedrock of our society.

Antes de intentar justificar lo que el presidente Trump y su administración afirman y hacen con respecto a los inmigrantes, todos deberían comprender la confusión sobre la realidad actual de los inmigrantes en Estados Unidos. El gobierno afirma estar deportando a extranjeros criminales indocumentados. Durante el último fin de semana, ha habido una intensa discusión entre la administración y la intervención judicial. En ningún momento la administración ha identificado a los deportados como indocumentados o criminales.

Primero: ICE afirma que los inmigrantes que envió a Venezuela son extranjeros no ciudadanos. Esto implica que se encuentran en alguna etapa de inmigración legal. No son sin revisión. Pueden ser residentes permanentes, residentes temporales, personas a las que se les ha concedido el estatus de refugiado o estar a la espera de una decisión sobre su caso. Todos estos no ciudadanos se encuentran legalmente en este país. Tenga la seguridad de que, si fueran indocumentados, ese habría sido el titular, no simplemente un producto de la imaginación.

Segundo: Se les acusa de ser pandilleros. No se presenta ninguna prueba de pertenencia a una pandilla. “Parecen pandilleros” simplemente no es suficiente. Si la acusación es cierta, podemos estar seguros de que se habrían aportado más pruebas.

Tercero: Pertenecer a una pandilla no es un delito, y ciertamente ser presunto pandillero tampoco lo es.

Cuarto: No se han presentado pruebas de que las personas recientemente deportadas hayan cometido delitos. Se alega que algunas tenían antecedentes penales en sus países de origen. De ser así, depórtenlas, pero no habría sido necesario el espectáculo de la semana pasada.

Espero que los estadounidenses se detengan, escuchen lo que se dice y reconozcan la desinformación y la exageración. Debemos buscar soluciones reales a los problemas de nuestra sociedad, en lugar de aceptar la desinformación que proviene del ICE y la Administración. Quiero una sociedad a salvo de los criminales. No estoy seguro de que la deportación garantice que un criminal pueda regresar a nuestra sociedad, pero si un criminal es deportado, espero que no pueda regresar. Sin embargo, lo que se está haciendo con la prisa por deportar a extranjeros no ciudadanos no tiene nada que ver con deportar criminales ni con hacer de este país un lugar seguro. Las declaraciones hechas por ICE y la Administración son, en el mejor de los casos, engañosas o simplemente mentiras.

Be a critical reader on immigration

Before trying to justify what President Trump and his administration claims and does regarding immigrants, all people should understand the blurring of truth about immigrants in the United States today. The government claims to be deporting undocumented criminal foreign nationals. Over the past weekend there has been a great deal of argument between the administration and judicial intervention. On absolutely no occasion has the administration identified those being deported as being undocumented or criminal.

First: ICE claims that the immigrants whom they sent to Venezuela are non-citizen foreign nationals. That implies that they are some stage of legal immigration. They did not enter without inspection. They may be permanent resident, temporary resident, people having been granted status as refugee, or awaiting a decision on their case. All such non-citizens are legally present in this country. You can rest assured that if they were undocumented, that would have been the headline, not simply left to imagination.

Second: They are alleged to be gang members. No proof of gang membership is given. “They look like gang members” is simply not enough. If there is truth to the allegation, we can be certain that more proof would have been provided.

Third: Being in a gang is not a crime, and certainly to be an alleged gang member is not a crime.

Fourth: No proof has been presented of those recently deported to have done criminal acts. It is alleged that some had criminal records in their native countries. If so deport them, but it would not have needed the show of the past week.

I hope that Americans stop, listen to what is being said, recognize misinformation and exaggeration. We must seek real solutions to our society´s problems, rather than accept the disinformation coming from ICE and the Administration. I want a society safe from criminals. I am uncertain if deportation guarantees that a criminal may return to our society, but if a criminal is deported, I hope that he cannot return. Yet, what is taking place in a rush to deport non-citizen foreign nationals has nothing to do with deporting criminals and making this country safe. Statements made by ICE and the Administration are misleading at best or they are simply outright lies.

En camino sin saber el destino

Consideremos a Abraham (Dt 26:5): “Mi padre era un arameo errante”. Tomó a su esposa y salió de Ur en Caldea en busca de una tierra que Dios le mostraría. No conocía su destino. Solo sabía que salía de Mesopotamia y confiaba en que Dios estaría con él y le mostraría una “tierra prometida”. Muchos migrantes dejan su tierra natal sabiendo que no pueden regresar. Van a otro país con la esperanza de establecer una vida estable, pero hoy es incierto que puedan encontrar una nación que los acepte. Los migrantes tienen esperanza, aunque no conozcan su destino final.

Pedro entró a los Estados Unidos sin inspección hace veinte años. Trabajó durante siete años en una granja, adquiriendo una variedad de habilidades. Trabajó en la cosecha de varias frutas y verduras. Cultivó y podó árboles frutales y vides. Aprendió a operar maquinaria agrícola. Se volvió hábil en la reparación de cercas, graneros y viviendas para los trabajadores de la cosecha. Su empleador contrató abogados para tratar de conseguirle la residencia legal, pero al final, fue deportado. Dos años después, entró en Canadá con una autorización de trabajo. Obtuvo la residencia temporal y ahora tiene la residencia permanente en Canadá. Su trabajo en los Estados Unidos lo preparó para ser un empleado valioso en Canadá. Ahora dice que después de veinte años como migrante, ahora sabe el destino mientras busca la ciudadanía en Canadá.

Algunos migrantes llegan a su “tierra prometida” como lo hicieron Abraham y Pedro. Muchos migrantes continúan vagando con la esperanza de encontrar un hogar. La emigración se produce cuando una persona sabe que debe abandonar su tierra natal. Algunos conocen su destino, especialmente si tienen seres queridos en otra nación, pero muchos son como Pedro cuando entró los Estados Unidos. Confían en que Dios está con ellos, pero no saben el destino de sus vidas.

On the way without knowing the destination

Consider Abraham (Dt 26:5), “My father was a wandering Aramean.” He took his wife and left Ur in Chaldea to seek a land that God would show him. He did not know his destination. He only knew that he was leaving Mesopotamia and he trusted that God would be with him and show him a “promised land”. Many migrants leave their homeland, knowing that they cannot return. They go to another country with hope to establish a stable life, but today it is uncertain that they may find a nation to accept them. Migrants are hopeful even though they do not know their ultimate destination.

Pedro entered the United States without inspection twenty years ago. He worked for seven years on a farm, gaining a variety of skills. He worked in the harvest of various fruits and vegetables. He cultivated and pruned fruit trees and vines. He learned to operate farm machinery. He became handy in repairing fences, sheds, barns and housing for harvest workers. His employer hired lawyers to try to get him legal residence, but in the end, he was deported. Two years later, he entered Canada with a work authorization. He gained temporary residence and now has permanent residence in Canada. His work in the United States prepared him to be a valued employee in Canada. He says now that after twenty years as a migrant, he now knows the destination as he seeks citizenship in Canada.

Some migrants reach their “promised land” as Abraham and Pedro did. Many migrants continue to wander in hope of finding a home. Emigration takes place when a person knows that they must leave their homeland. Some know their destination, especially if they have loved ones in another nation, but many are like Pedro when he entered the United States. They trust that God is with them, but they do not know the destination of their lives.

Soy un sacerdote migrante

Cuando comencé a trabajar en una iniciativa redentorista, Casa San Alfonso, necesitaba aprender español. Otro redentorista me dijo: “Si no caminas con mi pueblo, no te molestes en aprender español”. Me embarqué en un camino para caminar con jóvenes inmigrantes en Denver. Al principio no sabía que estaba a punto de convertirme en un sacerdote itinerante sin un lugar al que llamar “hogar”. Como la primera comunidad judía dijo que su padre era un “arameo errante”, me convertí en un “redentorista errante”.

Durante cinco años, Casa San Alfonso fue mi hogar en Denver, pero no estaba vinculado a un ministerio parroquial. Cada fin de semana celebraba misas en parroquias de la Arquidiócesis de Denver. Los pastores de comunidades rurales y montañosas que se estaban adaptando a una afluencia de inmigrantes hispanos en sus pueblos pidieron a nuestra comunidad que ofreciera misas en sus parroquias para que al menos una vez al mes sus misas en español pudieran ser celebradas por sacerdotes con un mejor dominio del español en sus comunidades. Nuestra comunidad de jóvenes nos ayudó a menudo a ofrecer retiros para jóvenes en esas comunidades. El último año de Casa San Alfonso, comenzamos a ofrecer misiones parroquiales bilingües con algunos de nuestros jóvenes ayudando en las misiones.

Después de terminar Casa San Alfonso, junto con el padre Roberto Simón, formé un equipo de misiones bilingües, dos sacerdotes y un equipo de voluntarios laicos. Éramos una comunidad religiosa itinerante que ofrecía misiones parroquiales en trece estados. Operamos desde Denver, pero rara vez estábamos en casa. Una pregunta difícil para mí es: “¿Dónde vives?” Después de todos estos años de mudarme, de un ministerio a otro, de un estado a otro e incluso a México, mi identidad simplemente no incluye un lugar al que llamar hogar. Soy un trabajador migrante. Soy un sacerdote migrante. Soy Padre Migrante.

I am a migrant priest

When I began working on a Redemptorist initiative, Casa San Alfonso, I needed to learn Spanish. I was told by another Redemptorist, “If you will not walk with my people, don’t bother to learn Spanish.” I set out on a path to walk with immigrant young people in Denver. I was not aware in the beginning that I was about to become an itinerant priest with no place to call “home”. As the early Jewish community said that their father was a “wandering Aramean”, I became a “wandering Redemptorist.”

For five years, Casa San Alfonso was my home in Denver, but I was not attached to a parish ministry. Each weekend I celebrated Masses in parishes around the Archdiocese of Denver. Pastors in rural and mountain communities who were adjusting to an influx of Hispanic immigrants in their towns asked our community to offer Masses in their parishes so that at least once a month their Spanish Masses could priests with a better mastery of Spanish celebrate in their communities. Our youth community often helped us offer retreats for youth in those communities. The last year of Casa San Alfonso, we began to offer bilingual parish missions with some of our youth group assisting on the missions.

After ending Casa San Alfonso, along with Fr. Bob Simon, I formed a bilingual mission team, two priests and a team of lay volunteers. We were a traveling religious community offering parish missions in thirteen states. We operated out of Denver, but we were seldom home. During the summers, we began a summer mission for harvest worker families in The Dalles, Oregon. The harvest mission continued for thirteen years. In 2001, I joined a Redemptorist initiative in the Diocese of Dodge City, Kansas. For eleven months of the year I worked in Kansas, and went to Oregon in June for the harvest mission. During a sabbatical in 2007, Tucson became my home base, but for the next two years, I spent three months working in the cherry harvest in California and Oregon, and preached parish missions for a year and a half.

In 2009, I became the director for Campesino Ministry in Fresno. After four years I went to Omaha, NE to help initiate Hispanic ministry in the parish of my childhood, then another year of preaching parish missions. I spent five years in Mississippi doing rural Hispanic outreach in the Mississippi delta. Finally, from 2020 until today I have been involved in a series of three to six months assignments that have been in six states and Mexico.

A difficult question for me is, “Where do you live?” After all these years of moving, from ministry to ministry, state to state and even to Mexico, my identity simply does not include a place to call home. I am a migrant worker. I am a migrant priest. I am Padre Migrante.

Para entender el desafío pastoral de brindar ministerio a los trabajadores migrantes y sus familias, uno debe reconocer a todos los trabajadores cuyo trabajo exige movilidad del trabajador y a menudo lo separa de sus seres queridos. Muchas industrias, incluido el gobierno y la Iglesia, dependen de una fuerza laboral compuesta por personas que pasan gran parte de su tiempo fuera de su base de origen. La comunidad de trabajadores itinerantes incluye: trabajadores de la cosecha, trabajadores de la construcción, artistas y sus equipos de apoyo, militares, producción de energía, trabajadores del transporte, turismo, atención médica, socorro en casos de desastre, política y servicio gubernamental, atletas y muchos otros.

Los trabajadores migrantes pueden cambiar de residencia a menudo en sus carreras. La movilidad de los trabajadores es un factor que afecta la accesibilidad de la participación religiosa de los trabajadores migrantes y sus familiares. Habiendo trabajado gran parte de mi vida con inmigrantes y personas de color en el extremo económico más bajo de la fuerza laboral migrante, a menudo abogo por una mayor inclusión del trabajador migrante pobre y sus familias en el alcance sacramental de la Iglesia. En “Camina con mi pueblo” (p. 226), escribo sobre una persona que se identifica como “trabajador migrante”.

En una celebración parroquial navideña conocí a un jugador de béisbol profesional. Le gustaba platicar conmigo sobre el ministerio de los campesinos migrantes. Él dijo: “Yo también soy un trabajador migrante. Pasé muchos años jugando en las ligas menores y un breve tiempo en la liga mayor. He sido entrenador durante diez años y ahora soy un gerente de la liga menor. Debido a todas las mudanzas en mi carrera de béisbol, mis hijos, como sus trabajadores migrantes, han experimentado muchas dificultades para recibir los sacramentos.  Aunque las parroquias pueden hacer más excepciones para mí que para su gente”.

Mi trabajo es a menudo con los pobres que necesitan la atención de la Iglesia, pero los principios del ministerio migrante deben aplicarse a todas las personas en situación de movilidad. La semana pasada, participé en un día de cabildeo en Capitol Hill en Washington, DC. Reconocí que muchas personas involucradas en la vida alrededor del Capitolio son trabajadores migrantes. A menudo deben viajar lejos de sus hogares, cónyuges e hijos. Puede que no se identifiquen como trabajadores migrantes, ¿pero…?

“I am a migrant worker.”

To understand the pastoral challenge of providing ministry to migrant workers and their families, one must recognize all workers whose work demands mobility of the worker and often separates the worker from loved ones. Many industries, including the government and the Church depend on a workforce made up of people who spend much of their time away from their home base. The traveling worker community includes: harvest workers, construction workers, entertainers and their support teams, military, energy production, workers in transportation, tourism, health care, disaster relief, politics and government service, athletes, and many others.

Migrant workers may change residence often in their careers. Worker mobility is a factor that affects the accessibility of religious participation of migrant workers and family members. Having worked much of my life with immigrants and people of color on the lower economic end of the migrant (mobile) workforce, I often advocate for greater inclusion of the poor migrant worker and their families in the sacramental outreach of the Church. In “Walk with my people” (p. 115-6), I write of a person identifying himself as a “migrant worker”.

At a parish Christmas celebration, I met a professional baseball player. He enjoyed speaking with me about migrant farmworker ministry, and told me, “I am a migrant worker also. I spent many years playing in the minor leagues and had a brief time in the majors. I have been a coach for ten years, and now I am a minor league manager. Because of all the moves I have made in my baseball career; my family has experienced many of the same obstacles in receiving sacraments as your farmworkers. Although parishes may make more exceptions for me than for your people.” 

My work is often with the poor who need attention by the Church, but the principles of migrant ministry need to be applied for all people of mobility. Last week, I participated in a lobby day on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC. I recognized that many people engaged in life around the Capitol are migrant workers. They often must travel away from their homes, spouses and children. They may not identify themselves as migrant workers, but …..?
