Alegría y esperanza

En 1965, después de dos guerras mundiales y muchos avances en ciencia, salud, transporte, aviación, comunicación, educación y conciencia social, existían preocupaciones sobre cómo la Iglesia podía y debía abordar el mundo moderno. El Concilio abordó esas preocupaciones en el documento sobre la Iglesia en el mundo moderno, comenzando con las palabras “Gaudium et Spes”, Alegría y esperanza. Durante el papado del Papa Francisco, la alegría y la esperanza han sido temas importantes. Su primera Exhortación Apostólica fue “La alegría del Evangelio”, y para este año de Jubileo, nos llama a ser “Peregrinos de esperanza”.

La alegría y la esperanza son virtudes necesarias en todo momento dentro de la Iglesia. Los tiempos son bastante diferentes desde la década de 1960 hasta hoy. Probablemente, la alegría y la esperanza son más importantes hoy que en cualquier otro momento de la historia reciente.

Joy and Hope

In 1965, after two World Wars and many advancements in science, healthcare, transportation, aviation, communication, education, and social awareness, there were concerns about how the Church could and should approach the modern world. The Council addressed those concerns in the document on the Church in the Modern World, beginning with the words, “Gaudium et Spes”, Joy and Hope. During the papacy of Pope Francis, joy and hope have been important themes. His first Apostolic Exhortation was “The Joy of the Gospel,” and for this year of Jubilee, he calls on us to be “Pilgrims of Hope.”

Joy and hope are virtues needed at all times within the Church. The times are quite different from the 1960’s to today. Probably, joy and hope are more important today than any time in recent memory.

¿Cuál es su esperanza?

En un mes, la administración Trump ha eliminado casi todos los logros de los últimos treinta años en obras de justicia para los inmigrantes. Y en los últimos años, los pasos positivos hacia la renovación en la Iglesia iniciados en el Concilio Vaticano II han flaqueado debido a una reacción contra el espíritu del Concilio. En un momento de peligro político y divisiones dentro de la Iglesia, el Papa Francisco inició este año de Jubileo llamándonos a ser “Peregrinos de la Esperanza”.

En mi vida como Redentorista, aspiré a trabajar por los “más abandonados”. La manera de hacerlo era trabajar por la justicia en la vida diaria y para que la Iglesia fuera más acogedora con los pobres y los inmigrantes. Como defensor de los derechos de los inmigrantes, trabajé para proteger y caminar con los migrantes. Celebré las costumbres y la cultura de los pueblos latinos. Dentro de la Iglesia, trabajé para dar la bienvenida a los migrantes, a la palabra y a los sacramentos.

Como “Peregrinos de la Esperanza”, debemos recordar que una peregrinación no es simplemente una caminata. Es un viaje desafiante. Cruza montañas y arroyos. Puede ser a través de un frío glacial o de un calor sofocante. No es un viaje tranquilo. Y el destino sólo se ve el último día. Al comenzar la Cuaresma la semana que viene, identifiquemos nuestra esperanza.

A veces, en el camino de la vida, parece que damos tres pasos hacia adelante y cinco hacia atrás. Después de un mes de un presidente que persigue a la gente que amo y de la mala salud de un Papa cuya preocupación por los inmigrantes inspiró el ministerio con los migrantes, es difícil no desanimarse. Como “Peregrinos de la Esperanza”, estamos en un viaje sin saber realmente el destino, pero sigamos caminando juntos con confianza en Dios.

What is your hope?

In one month, the Trump administration has taken away almost all of the gains of the past thirty years in works of justice for immigrants. And in recent years, the positive strides towards renewal in the Church begun in the Second Vatican Council have faltered on account of a backlash against the spirit of the Council. In a time of political peril and divisions within the Church, Pope Francis initiated this year of Jubilee calling us to be “Pilgrims of Hope.”

In my life as a Redemptorist, I aspired to work for the “most abandoned”. The way to do so was to work for justice in daily life and that Church become more welcoming of the poor and the immigrant. As an advocate for the rights of migrants, I worked to protect and to walk with immigrants. I celebrated the customs and culture of Latino peoples. Within the Church, I worked to welcome the migrants, to the word and the sacraments.

As “Pilgrims of Hope”, we need to remember that a pilgrimage is not simply a walk or a hike. It is a challenging journey. It crosses mountains and streams. It can be through freezing cold or suffocating heat. It is not a leisurely journey. And the destination is only seen on the last day. As we begin Lent next week, may we identify our hope.

Sometimes on the path of life it seems that we take three steps forward and five steps back. After one month of a President persecuting the people I love and the failing health of a Pope whose concern for immigrants inspired ministry with migrants, it is difficult not to get discouraged. As “Pilgrims of Hope” we are on a journey without truly knowing the destination, but let us continue walk together with confidence in God.

Necesitamos una reforma migratoria

Mucha gente pregunta cómo van las cosas en el ministerio de migración con todas las medidas adoptadas por el ICE recientemente. Es difícil responder. Vemos acciones de ICE en varias comunidades, pero los resultados son incertidumbre, miedo y dolor. Las acciones de ICE son hechos de intimidación y separación de familias. También son hechos contra empleadores que dependen de la mano de obra inmigrante.

Necesitamos una reforma migratoria, no una deportación indiscriminada. Lamentablemente, todos los esfuerzos honestos del pasado en materia de inmigración han sido rechazados por políticos que simplemente no querían buscar soluciones humanas. En el entorno político actual, carecemos del coraje político entre nuestros líderes para buscar mejores soluciones.

We need immigration reform

Many people ask how things are going in migration ministry with all the measures taken by ICE recently. It is difficult to answer. We see ICE actions in several communities, but the primary results are uncertainty, fear and pain. The actions of ICE are acts of intimidation and separation of families. They are also done against employers who depend on immigrant labor.

We need immigration reform, not indiscriminate deportation. Sadly, all honest efforts in the past on immigration have been rejected by politicians who simply do not want to look for humane solutions. In the current political environment, we lack the political courage among our leaders to look for better solutions.

“Mi tiempo es tu tiempo”

“Mi casa es tu casa” es una frase muy utilizada en la comunidad latina para referirse a la hospitalidad. La escucho con tanta frecuencia que me gusta decir que soy lo más rico del mundo, porque tengo casas en todo Estados Unidos, México y en naciones de América Central y del Sur. Esta mañana recibí un mensaje de mi superior provincial pidiéndome un momento para poder hablar. Le respondí que, a mi edad, soy libre de hablar con él cuando le convenga, pero escribí: “mi tiempo es tu tiempo”. Esto me hizo pensar en la vida ahora, en el “ministerio de la tercera edad”.

Hace varios años, mi superior provincial me dijo que esperaba que yo pudiera ser un ejemplo para otros sobre el ministerio de la tercera edad como sacerdote. En la conversación, mientras hablaba con él, quedó claro que apreciaba que yo no hubiera estado involucrado en el ministerio ordinario de los sacerdotes durante mucho tiempo. No era párroco o profesor ni ocupaba un cargo en una parroquia, escuela o diócesis. Yo era un sacerdote migrante que predicaba misiones parroquiales y ofrecía ayuda a corto plazo en una variedad de ministerios. Él me dijo que me ofreciera ayuda particular y para tareas a corto plazo.

Esta mañana, cuando escribí que “mi tiempo es tu tiempo”, me di cuenta de que eso es exactamente lo que significa la vida de un anciano. Puedo hacer lo que quiero hacer, cuando quiero hacerlo y donde quiero hacerlo. Sin embargo, nunca debo hacerlo de manera egoísta. Estoy disponible y puedo decirle a otra persona cuándo puedo ayudar.

Hace un par de años, estaba muy claro. Sucedió que no tenía nada importante planeado para los próximos cuatro meses. Decidí hacer un retiro personal en Tucson. Les dije a los miembros de mi comunidad que estaría fuera durante dos semanas y que regresaría para el Domingo de Ramos a menos que alguien en Tucson pidiera ayuda. Recién había llegado a Tucson cuando recibí una llamada telefónica de un obispo de Texas. Dijo que tenía una emergencia y necesitaba un sacerdote para cubrir la Semana Santa de un pastor que necesitaba una cirugía de emergencia. Le dije: “Está bien, y si necesitas a alguien para su tiempo de recuperación, puedo ocupar su lugar durante tres meses”. Fue una situación un poco extrema, “mi tiempo es tu tiempo”.

“Mi tiempo es tu tiempo”

“Mi casa es tu casa” (my house is your house) is a phrase used often in the Latino community to refer to hospitality. I hear it so often that I like to say that I am the richest person in the world, because I have homes all over the United States, Mexico, and in Central and South America. This morning I received a message from my provincial superior asking for a moment to talk. I responded that, at my age, I am free to talk to him whenever it suits him, but I wrote, “my time is your time.” This got me thinking about life now, about “senior ministry.”

Several years ago, my provincial superior told me that he hoped I could be an example to others about senior ministry as a priest. In the conversation, as I spoke with him, it was clear that he appreciated that I had not been involved in the ordinary ministry of priests for a long time. I was not a pastor or teacher or held an office in a parish, school, or diocese. I was a migrant priest preaching parish missions and offering short-term help in a variety of ministries. He told me to offer help on a one-to-one basis and for short-term assignments.

This morning, when I wrote that “my time is your time,” I realized that this is exactly what the life of a “senior priest in ministry” means. I can do what I want to do, when I want to do it, and where I want to do it. However, I must never do it selfishly. I am available and I can tell someone else when I can help.

It was extremely clear a couple years ago. It happened that I had nothing major planned for the next four months. I decided to make a personal retreat in Tucson. I told members of my community that I would be gone for two weeks and I would be back for Palm Sunday unless someone in Tucson asked for help. I had only arrived in Tucson when I received a phone call from a Bishop in Texas. He said that he had an emergency and needed a priest to cover for Holy Week for a pastor who needed an emergency surgery. I told him, “Ok, and if you need someone for his time of recovery, I can take his place for three months.” That was a bit of an extreme “my time is your time” situation.

Caminar con un inmigrante

He tenido la suerte de trabajar con las personas más maravillosas del mundo durante los últimos treinta años. La mayoría de las personas con las que he trabajado son inmigrantes. Los inmigrantes son testigos de la esperanza, la generosidad, la fe, el perdón, la responsabilidad y la familia. Reconozco que cuando se los trata con respeto y dignidad, se abren a lo mejor que ofrece la fe y a lo mejor de lo que es este país.

Los inmigrantes a menudo tienen que adaptarse a duras condiciones en su trabajo y en las comunidades donde viven. Algunos caen en la tentación de abusar del alcohol y pueden involucrarse en relaciones poco saludables. Sin embargo, la mayoría de los inmigrantes simplemente siguen con sus vidas tratando de crear una vida mejor para ellos y sus hijos. Todos los estudios independientes y no partidistas muestran que hay menos criminalidad entre los inmigrantes que entre los ciudadanos estadounidenses. Sin embargo, los políticos y los agentes de ICE los llaman criminales. No hay millones de inmigrantes criminales. No hay cientos de miles de inmigrantes criminales. La delincuencia en la comunidad inmigrante es muy limitada y, cuando hay delincuencia, no es porque la persona sea inmigrante. La delincuencia surge de las adicciones, la pobreza extrema, la falta de oportunidades y los trastornos sociales y psicológicos.

Abordar la delincuencia es importante, pero actuar como si la delincuencia en Estados Unidos fuera un problema de inmigración aleja a las fuerzas del orden de los verdaderos peligros y delincuentes en Estados Unidos y debilita nuestra seguridad.

Walk with an immigrant

I have been blessed working with the most wonderful people in the world for the past thirty years. Most of the people with whom I have worked are immigrants. Immigrants are witnesses to hope, generosity, faith, forgiveness, responsibility and family. I recognize that when treated with respect and dignity they open themselves to the best of what faith offers and to the best of what this country is.

Immigrants often have to adapt to harsh conditions in their work and in the communities where they live. Some fall into temptations to abuse alcohol and may engage in unhealthy relationships. Yet, most immigrants simply go about their lives trying to create a better life for themselves and their children. All independent, non-partisan studies show that there is less criminality among immigrants than among American citizens. Yet, politicians and ICE agents call them criminals. There are not millions of criminal immigrants. There are not hundreds of thousands of criminal immigrants. Crime in the immigrant community is very limited, and when there is crime, it is not because a person is an immigrant.  Crime arises from addictions, extreme poverty, lack of opportunity, and social/psychological disorders.  

Addressing crime is important, but acting as though crime in America is a migration problem takes law enforcement away from the real dangers and criminals in the United States and weakens our security.

CMFN en Carolina del Norte

Hoy, el padre Tom Florek y yo participaremos en un evento de capacitación diocesano para personas que se dedicaron al ministerio de trabajadores agrícolas en la Diócesis de Raleigh. El verano pasado, visitamos a muchas personas dedicadas a extender el amor de la Iglesia a los que trabajan en los campos y en las plantas empacadoras de la diócesis. El Ministerio de la Red Católica del Ministerio Campesino ofrecen ayuda en un programa llamado “Sembrador”. Nuestras presentaciones ayudan a las personas locales a reconocer las necesidades pastorales de los trabajadores migrantes en su comunidad y ayudan en el desarrollo de respuestas pastorales basadas en las necesidades de las personas a las que sirven. Recuerde a los voluntarios del ministerio de migrantes que ofrecen atención pastoral a los trabajadores migrantes en Carolina del Norte.

CMFN in North Carolina

Today, Fr. Tom Florek and I will participate in a diocesan training event for people who engaged in farmworker ministry in the Diocese of Raleigh. Last summer, we visited many dedicated people extending the love of the Church to people in the fields and packing houses in the diocese. Catholic Migrant Farmworker Network supports campesino ministry in a program called “Sembrador”. Our presentations help local people recognize the pastoral needs of the migrant workers in their community and help in the development of pastoral responses based on the needs of the people whom they serve. Please remember the migrant ministry volunteers who offer pastoral care to the migrant workers in North Carolina.

En 1991, fui capellán del proyecto “Weed and Seed” en el departamento de policía de Denver. En el proyecto, los agentes de policía debían pasar seis horas a la semana caminando por nuestro barrio. Era para generar confianza en la policía dentro de una comunidad pobre. Un policía que no estaba contento con su asignación al proyecto vino a visitarme a la Casa. En ese mismo tiempo, como sacerdote, comencé a caminar con emigrantes, inmigrantes y migrantes. Mi viaje ha sido como la experiencia del oficial de Weed and Seed. Pasé treinta y cinco años caminando con jóvenes migrantes que llegaban a los Estados Unidos con esperanzas y sueños, recogiendo cultivos en California y Oregon, atendiendo a personas en plantas empacadoras, lecherías y a quienes trabajan en las industrias del turismo y los servicios. Mi ministerio de evangelización consiste en acompañar a las personas en la periferia de la sociedad, más que en enseñar.

Todos estamos llamados a servir y a ser testigos de nuestra fe.

Do the poor need to be evangelized?

We Redemptorists say of ourselves that we are “called to evangelize and to be evangelized by the poor.” It has always been impressed upon us throughout our formation that we all need to be evangelized, and if the poor can evangelize us, great. But, if it is the poor who evangelize us, what need do the poor have to be evangelized. Do we take seriously the last judgment in the gospel of Matthew, (Mt. 25:31-49)? Do we recognize Jesus in the poor, the thirsty, the stranger? If the stranger is Jesus, why would he or she need evangelization?

Just as we need to see Jesus in the stranger, the stranger needs to see Jesus in himself/herself. Recently I spoke with one of the young people who was a regular at our youth community, Casa San Alfonso over thirty years ago. I asked what Casa San Alfonso meant to him. He said, “You helped us believe that we were good, better than we could imagine.” We came to believe it ourselves.

In our need for conversion, we need to recognize Jesus in the poor. And the poor need to recognize Jesus in themselves. The poor need self-awareness that they are Jesus. The one who has more needs conversion. The one who has little needs self-awareness, recognizing Jesus within. In this way we come to know Jesus.

“Called to serve and protect”

In 1991, I was a chaplain for the “Weed and Seed” project in the Denver police department. Police officers were to spend six hours each week walking around our barrio. It was to build trust of the police in a poor community. One officer who was unhappy about being assigned to the unit came to visit me at Casa San Alfonso. He said, “Padre, when I was assigned to this unit, I considered it a demotion. I realize now that I needed this program. I had come to see everyone I met as a criminal. I suspected everyone. As I walk around the barrio, people greet me by name and offer me a good day. One day, it was hot, and I was thirsty. A woman asked if I wanted a glass of cucumber water. I thought, ‘I am not supposed to accept anything offered on the street.’ But I was so thirsty. I said, ‘Just a small glass, please.’ Of course, she gave me a large glass.” He went on to say, “We are called to serve and protect, and with this program I am learning WHO I am called to serve and protect.”

In that same time, as a priest, I began to walk with emigrants, immigrants and migrants. My journey has been like the Weed and Seed officer’s experience. Spending thirty-five years walking with young migrants coming to the United States with hopes and dreams, picking crops in California and Oregon, ministering to people in packing houses, dairies and those working in tourism and service industries. My ministry of evangelization is in accompanying people on the periphery of society, more than in teaching.

We are all called to serve and to be witnesses to our faith.

El mayor cumplido

Algunas personas se sintieron ofendidas por mi homilía del domingo (en el blog de ayer). La sensibilidad se debió a que llamé abominación a las “deportaciones masivas”. Es mejor escuchar al Papa Francisco en su carta a la Conferencia de Obispos Católicos de los Estados Unidos (10 de febrero de 2025) hablando sobre la deportación masiva:

“El acto de deportar personas que en muchos casos han dejado su propia tierra por motivos de pobreza extrema, de inseguridad, de explotación, de persecución o por el grave deterioro del medio ambiente, lastima la dignidad de muchos hombres y mujeres, de familias enteras, y los coloca en un estado de especial vulnerabilidad e indefensión.”

Mi caminar con los migrantes ha sido con las personas más difamadas de la tierra, y cuando me opongo a los políticos engañosos que justifican la deportación masiva, y cuando mis palabras molestan a quienes apoyan esas deportaciones, acepto la crítica como un cumplido. Al fin y al cabo, en el evangelio de Lucas, Jesús dijo: «Dichosos serán ustedes cuando los hombres los aborrezcan y los expulsen de entre ellos, y cuando los insulten y maldigan por causa del Hijo del hombre.» Y «¡Ay de ustedes, cuando todo el mundo los alabe!».

Greatest compliment

A couple people were offended by my homily on Sunday (on yesterday’s blog). The sensitivity was because I called “mass deportations” an abomination. It is better to listen to Pope Francis in his letter to the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (Feb. 10, 2025) speaking about mass deportation:

“The act of deporting people who in many cases have left their own land for reasons of extreme poverty, insecurity, exploitation, persecution or serious deterioration of the environment, damages the dignity of many men and women, and of entire families, and places them in a state of particular vulnerability and defenselessness.”

My walk with migrants has been with the most maligned people on earth, and when I take exception to deceptive politicians justifying mass deportation, and when my words bother those who support those deportations, I accept the criticism as a compliment. After all, in the gospel of Luke, Jesus said, “Blessed are you when people hate you, and when they exclude and insult you, and denounce your name as evil on account of the Son of Man.” And, “Woe to you when all speak well of you.”

Homilía dominical sobre las Bienaventuranzas

Cuando estaba en séptimo grado, hubo una convención de vocaciones patrocinada por el club Serra. Había un folleto de una congregación misionera que nunca olvidé. Decía: “No me digas que eres católico, muéstramelo”. El folleto mostraba imágenes de personas sin hogar, niños hambrientos y un gran sufrimiento en tierras extranjeras, pero era Jesús el que decía: “muéstramelo”. Entré en un seminario menor después del octavo grado no para convertirme en sacerdote, sino para convertirme en redentorista. La congregación redentorista está llamada a “servir a los más abandonados”, y mi manera de servir a los abandonados era como sacerdote misionero.

Con el paso de los años, me olvidé del folleto “muéstramelo”, pero lo recordé cuando escuché declaraciones recientes de políticos que comenzaban con “soy católico” o “soy cristiano” y luego respaldaban acciones para castigar, deportar, abusar y separar a las familias de personas abandonadas por la sociedad. La primera acción de “muéstrame” que eres católico y cristiano es reconocer a Jesús, en el “hambriento”, el “sediento”, el “extranjero”, el “desnudo” y el “prisionero” (cf. Mt. 25:35-36).

Es interesante que quienes abogan por los pobres, quienes sirven comida en los refugios para personas sin hogar, quienes dirigen bancos de alimentos, asesoran a los dolientes, tratan a los adictos y cuidan a los refugiados no sientan la urgencia de identificar su origen religioso. Quienes cuidan a los abusados ​​y maltratados del mundo no tienen necesidad de decir: “Soy católico, soy cristiano”. Lo demuestran.

Las Bienaventuranzas en el Evangelio de Lucas

El relato más conocido de la enseñanza de Jesús sobre las Bienaventuranzas se encuentra en el Evangelio de Mateo. Mientras preparaba mi homilía de hoy, me encontré concentrándome en las diferencias entre el relato de Lucas y el de Mateo. Es una invitación a cambiar. No es demasiado tarde. Pensemos de nuevo en el folleto de vocaciones que capturó mi imaginación cuando tenía 13 años.

“No me digas que eres católico, muéstramelo”.

¿Qué significa tener fe? ¿Es fe cuando la persona que tiene salud, riqueza y la estima de los demás da gracias a Dios? ¿O es fe cuando alguien que sufre hambre, enfermedad, pérdidas y odio, todavía cree y da gracias a Dios? Jesús no dijo que los que tienen salud, riqueza y bendiciones carecían de fe, sino que eran verdaderamente fieles cuando lo veían en los hambrientos, los pobres, los marginados y se preocupaban por sus necesidades. (Mt. 25:31-46) Fue la fe lo que impulsó al Buen Samaritano a cuidar al extranjero herido. (Lc. 10:25-37)

El vicepresidente Vance se identifica frecuentemente como católico y justifica sus acciones políticas con su interpretación de la teología. Sin embargo, la fe en Dios no se encuentra en su interpretación y malentendido de San Agustín y Santo Tomás de Aquino, ya que enseñaron sobre el orden del amor (Ordo Amoris). En la interpretación del vicepresidente, Jesús estaría alabando al sacerdote y al levita en la parábola del Buen Samaritano. Debe considerar al samaritano como un tonto descarriado.

La fe sólo está presente en el reconocimiento de Jesús en los marginados y en las acciones de los buenos samaritanos, aquellos que se preocupan por los heridos del mundo.

Sé que a muchas personas no les gusta que en una homilía se consideren los males de la sociedad actual. Sin embargo, al considerar las Bienaventuranzas del evangelio de Lucas, debemos prestar atención a los “ay de” que predicó Jesús. Recuerden que la advertencia de Jesús sobre los “ay de” no está al final del evangelio de Lucas, sino en el capítulo seis. Es una invitación a cambiar nuestros corazones.

Sunday Homily on the Beatitudes

There was a vocation convention sponsored by the Serra club when I was in seventh grade. There was one brochure of a missionary congregation that I never forgot. It said, “Don’t tell me you are Catholic, show me.” The brochure pictured homeless people, starving children and great suffering in foreign lands, but it was Jesus saying, “show me”. I entered a minor seminary after eighth grade not to become a priest, but to become a Redemptorist. The Redemptorist congregation is called to “serve the most abandoned”, and my way to serve the abandoned was as a missionary priest.

Over the years, I forgot about the “show me” brochure, but I remembered it when hearing recent statements from politicians beginning with, “I’m Catholic” or “I’m Christian” and then they endorse actions to punish, deport, abuse and separate families of people abandoned by society. The first action of “show me” that you are Catholic and Christian is to recognize Jesus, in the “hungry”, the “thirsty”, the “stranger”, the “naked”, and the “prisoner” (cf. Mt. 25:35-36)

It is interesting that advocates for the poor, those who serve food at homeless shelters, those running food banks, counseling the grieving, treating the addicted and caring for refugees experience no urgency to identify their religious background. Those who care for the abused and mistreated of the world have no need to say, “I’m Catholic, I’m Christian”. They show it.

The Beatitudes in the Gospel of Luke

The more familiar account of Jesus teaching on the Beatitudes is found in the gospel of Matthew. As I prepared my homily for today, I found myself focusing on the differences between Luke’s account with the account of Matthew. In Matthew, Jesus reflects on the recipients of blessing in the third person, while in Luke he speaks to the reader directly. “Blessed are you who are poor….you who are hungry….you who are weeping….you when people hate you.” He is directly reassuring those who suffer.

He also speaks directly to those who are “rich” and “when all speak well of you.” The “woe” predicted for those who are comfortable today is not a threat, but it is a warning. It is an invitation to change. It is not too late. Consider again the vocation brochure that captured my imagination when I was 13 years old.

“Don’t tell me you are Catholic, show me.”

What does it mean to have faith? Is it faith when the person who has health, wealth, and the esteem of others gives thanks to God? Or is it faith when one who suffers hunger, illness, loss, and hatred, still believes and gives thanks to God? Jesus did not say that those who have health, wealth and blessings were lacking faith, but they were truly faithful when they saw him in the hungry, the poor, the outcast and cared for their needs. (Mt. 25:31-46) It was faith that moved the Good Samaritan to care for the wounded foreigner. (Lk. 10:25-37)

Vice-president Vance frequently identifies himself as Catholic and justifies his political actions with his interpretation of theology. Yet, faith in God is not found in his interpretation and misunderstanding of St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, as they taught about the order of love (Ordo Amoris). In the vice-president’s interpretation, Jesus would be praising the priest and the Levite in the parable of the Good Samaritan. He must consider the Samaritan to be a misguided fool.

The forced displacement of people by any government is an abomination wherever it takes place, whether it is in nations failing to protect their own people or in a nation engaged in mass deportations. Good government is never found in persecuting and deporting victims of failed governments. Good nations need to come together to respond to the injustices and the causes of forced migration. Faith is only present in recognizing Jesus in the outcast and in the actions of good Samaritans, those who care for the wounded people of the world.

I know that many people do not appreciate it when in a homily, the ills of today’s society are considered. Yet, when considering the Beatitudes in the gospel of Luke, we need to take heed of the “woes” that Jesus preached. Remember, Jesus’ warning of the “woes” is not at the end of Luke’s gospel, but in chapter six. It is and invitation to change our hearts.

Oh Jesús, tú nos llamas: “Síganme”. Bendice, Señor, a todos los que acogen tu llamado. Puede que el camino no sea fácil, pero tenemos la confianza de que todo es posible si caminamos contigo. Que este viaje nos abra los ojos a las maravillas de tu amor por nosotros. Oramos por toda tu gente, por todos los creyentes e incrédulos, por los líderes y seguidores. Oramos por la sanación, el perdón, la compasión, la justicia y la paz. Oramos para que, al seguirte, nosotros también podamos ser pescadores de hombres. Bendícenos en nuestro viaje.

O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
