Para entender la migración

“Mi padre era un arameo errante” (Dt 26:5). Para la comunidad judía primitiva, este pasaje era un recordatorio de sus raíces como pueblo migratorio. La migración de Abraham es la historia de un pueblo itinerante que se desplazaba hacia Dios y un lugar donde pudieran adorar en paz. Su historia representa la búsqueda humana de Dios, significado, seguridad y un lugar al que llamar hogar.

A lo largo de la historia, la gente ha apreciado la valentía y la gracia de las personas que eligieron trasladarse grandes distancias, incluso a otras naciones, en busca de libertad, fe, seguridad y oportunidades para su pueblo. Más que cualquier otra nación en la tierra, la historia de los Estados Unidos es la historia del movimiento de personas, la migración. La migración de personas en gran necesidad se celebra con la Estatua de la Libertad que da la bienvenida a los inmigrantes en el puerto de Nueva York. La migración de personas que se mudan de la Costa Este a la Costa Oeste se celebra a medida que la nación se expandió de las trece colonias originales a cincuenta estados.

Si bien los emigrantes de muchas naciones eligieron venir a los Estados Unidos, otros llegaron como personas desplazadas por la fuerza, esclavos. Otros llegaron a este país como trabajadores temporales para construir ferrocarriles y proporcionar mano de obra en comunidades agrícolas durante la necesidad de trabajadores cuando muchos de los trabajadores rurales sirvieron a la nación durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial. To Understand Migration

“My father was a wandering Aramean.” (Dt 26:5) For the early Jewish community, this passage was a reminder of their roots as a migratory people. The migration of Abraham is the story of itinerant people moving toward God and a place where they could worship in peace. His story represents the human search for God, meaning, security and a place to call home.

Throughout history, people have cherished the courage and grace of people who chose to move great distances, even to other nations, in pursuit of liberty, faith, safety and opportunity for their people. More than any other nation on earth, United States history is the story of the movement of people, migration. The migration of people in great need is celebrated by the Statue of Liberty welcoming immigrants into New York harbor. The migration of people moving from the East Coast to the West is celebrated as the nation expanded from the original thirteen colonies to become fifty states.

While emigrants from many nations chose to come to the United States, others came as forcefully displaced persons, slaves. Others came to this country as temporary workers to build railroads and to provide a workforce in agricultural communities during the need for workers when many of the rural workforce served the nation during World War II. After two world wars and many crises, migrants who arrived as workers, migrants and refugees became permanent residents and citizens.

In order to understand migration, certain terms need definition:

Emigrant: a person who leaves one’s own country in order to settle permanently in another country.

Immigrant: a person who has legal status to enter and stay in another country.

Migrant: a person who moves from one place to another, to find work or better living conditions. (the migrant may be present with or without inspection)

Detén el mito

El mito de la “migrante indocumentada criminal”. He trabajado durante treinta y cinco años en el ministerio de migración. He conocido a muchos miles de migrantes indocumentados. Dirigí una iniciativa para jóvenes del centro de la ciudad de Denver durante cinco años. Prediqué misiones parroquiales bilingües en más de quince estados. Trabajé en el ministerio campesino en Kansas, California, Oregon, Mississippi y más estados. Nunca he conocido a un criminal indocumentado en una iglesia, escuela o campamento de trabajadores agrícolas. Nunca he presenciado un crimen cometido por criminales indocumentados, aunque he presenciado crímenes cometidos contra inmigrantes indocumentados, incluso cometidos por agentes del gobierno y la policía.

No digo que no haya delitos dentro de la comunidad inmigrante, pero es menos probable que los cometa un inmigrante indocumentado que los cometan ciudadanos de los Estados Unidos. Las personas indocumentadas buscan trabajo y anonimato. Lo último que quieren hacer es llamar la atención. A veces pueden bajar la guardia debido a las condiciones de vida extremas, el abuso recibido, la injusticia, la depresión, la soledad y el alcohol. En cuanto a la entrada ilegal, el verdadero crimen es político, ya que no se ha hecho ningún esfuerzo para crear una vía apropiada de entrada para trabajadores, migrantes y refugiados. Las condiciones que crean la desesperación de las personas que buscan una vida mejor son las causas de todas las formas de entrada no autorizada. Con frecuencia, políticos matones lanzan acusaciones falsas contra los inmigrantes, que a su vez abusan de los trabajadores indocumentados en sus negocios.

El Papa Juan Pablo II identificó correctamente las causas de la violencia contra los migrantes y la respuesta que debe dar la Iglesia en su mensaje para la Jornada Mundial del Migrante y del Refugiado de 1996:

“Cuando la comprensión del problema esté condicionada por prejuicios y actitudes xenófobas, la Iglesia no debe dejar de hacer oír la voz de la fraternidad, acompañándola con gestos que testimonien el primado de la caridad”.

Stop the myth

The myth of the “criminal undocumented immigrant”. I have worked for thirty-five years within immigrant ministry. I have met many thousands of undocumented immigrants. I ran an initiative for inner city youth in Denver for five years. I preached bilingual parish missions in over fifteen states. I worked in farmworker ministry in Kansas, California, Oregon, Mississippi and more states. I have never met an undocumented criminal in a church, school or farmworker camp. I have never witnessed a crime done by undocumented criminals, although I have witnessed crimes done against undocumented immigrants, including done by government agents and police.

I am not saying that there is no crime within the immigrant community, but it is less likely to be done by an undocumented immigrant than by citizens of the United States. The undocumented persons seek work and anonymity. The last thing they want to do is to draw attention to themselves. Their guard may be down at times because of extreme living conditions, abuse received, injustice, depression, loneliness and alcohol.

Concerning illegal entry, the real crime is political, as no effort has been made to create an appropriate path of entry for workers, migrants and refugees. The conditions creating the desperation of people seeking a better life are the causes of all forms of unauthorized entry. False accusations against immigrants are frequently made by thuggish politicians who themselves abuse undocumented laborers in their businesses.

Pope John Paul II correctly identified the causes of violence against the migrant and the response that the Church must give in his message for the World Day of Migrants and Refugees, 1996:

“When an understanding of the problem (of migration) is conditioned by prejudice and xenophobic attitudes, the Church must not fail to speak up for brotherhood and to accompany it with acts testifying to the primacy of charity.”

Apertura a Jesucristo

El Papa Francisco invita a todos los cristianos “a renovar ahora mismo su encuentro personal con Jesucristo o, al menos, a tomar la decisión de dejarse encontrar por Él.” (EG. 3) La clave para un encuentro personal de este tipo es reconocer su presencia en los desdichados, los indefensos, los desfavorecidos del mundo. Castigar a las personas por su pobreza, raza, religión, mala salud, edad, educación y falta de estatus social no sólo es cruel, es una negación de las personas que Jesús amó y con las que se identificó. Nos encontramos a Jesús cuando alimentamos al hambriento, damos agua al sediento, vestimos al pobre y acoger al extranjero.

Negar la dignidad humana al migrante, al refugiado, a aquellos cuya inseguridad en sus países de origen los obliga a buscar refugio es no reconocer la presencia de Jesucristo. El Papa Francisco reconoce que muchas personas aspiran a seguir a Jesús, pero no lo reconocen. La invitación a un encuentro personal con Jesús está dirigida a todos, ya que “nadie queda excluido de la alegría reportada por el Señor”. (EG. 3)

No dejemos que la crueldad de los líderes políticos nos engañe. Es hora de reconocer que la agenda del presidente Trump no sólo no ayuda a los abandonados del mundo, sino que persigue a personas indefensas. Ahora anuncia que quiere deportar a ciudadanos estadounidenses. ¿Hasta dónde se detendrá?

Openness to Jesus Christ

Pope Francis invites all Christians “to a renewed personal encounter with Jesus Christ, or at least an openness to letting him encounter them.” (EG. 3) The key to such a personal encounter is to recognize his presence in the unfortunate, the helpless, the underprivileged of the world. Punishing people for their poverty, race, religion, ill health, age, education and lack of social status is not only cruel, it is a denial of the people whom Jesus loved and with whom he identified himself. We encounter Jesus when feeding the hungry, giving water to the thirsty, clothing the poor and welcoming the stranger.

To deny human dignity to the migrant, the refugee, those whose insecurity in their native lands force them to seek refuge is failure to recognize the presence of Jesus Christ. Pope Francis recognizes that many people aspire to follow Jesus, but fail to recognize him. The invitation to a personal encounter with Jesus is meant for everyone, since “no one is excluded from the joy brought by the Lord”. (EG. 3)

Do not let the cruelty of political leaders mislead us. It is time to recognize that President Trump’s agenda not only fails to aid the abandoned on the world, but it persecutes defenseless people. He now announces that he wants to deport American citizens. Where will he stop?

Necesitamos liderazgo

Es hora de dejar de actuar como si Estados Unidos actuara responsablemente al abordar la crisis de la migración a nivel regional o internacional de una manera responsable. Los enfoques vacilantes del presidente Trump y la falta de reflexión seria del Congreso, el Senado y los tribunales son perjudiciales para todas las personas en la Tierra. Poner a personas en aviones con destino a naciones extranjeras que pueden o no aceptarlas en sus países es inhumano, y hacerlo sabiendo que muchos morirán, las familias serán separadas y que la miseria aumentará es inhumano e inmoral.

El presidente Trump y sus acciones necesitan ser condenadas y el mundo necesita liderazgo. La migración no es un problema fronterizo. El Papa Benedicto XVI dijo correctamente en su encíclica “Caritas in Veritate”, que la migración global es un “fenómeno social de proporciones que marcan una época”. Los líderes de todas las naciones necesitan abordar estas cuestiones. Teniendo en cuenta la posición histórica de los Estados Unidos como nación de inmigrantes, debemos liderar y no someternos a las acciones imprudentes del presidente Trump y los políticos cobardes en Washington, DC.

We need leadership

It is time to stop acting as though the United States will act responsibly in addressing the crisis of migration regionally or internationally in a responsible way. The flailing approaches of President Trump and the lack of serious thought by Congress, the Senate and the courts are harmful to every person on earth. Putting people on planes to foreign nations who may or may not accept them into their countries is inhumane, and doing so knowing that many will die, families will be separated, and that the misery will increase is inhumane and immoral.

President Trump and his actions need condemnation and the world needs leadership. Migration is not a border issue. Pope Benedict XVI correctly said in his encyclical “Caritas in Veritate”, that global migration is a “social phenomenon of epoch-making proportions.” Leaders of all nations need to address these issues. On account the historic position of the United States as a nation of immigrants, we should lead and not submit to the reckless actions of President Trump and cowardly politicians in Washington, DC.

Orgullo nacional y orgullo por mi fe

Hace mucho tiempo que siento orgullo nacional y por mi fe católica. Soy un idealista. Cuando era joven, las palabras del presidente John F. Kennedy me resultaron inspiradoras: “No preguntes qué puede hacer tu país por ti, pregunta qué puedes hacer tú por tu país”. Me inspiró el sueño del Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Escuché el llamado a la renovación en la Iglesia iniciado por el Concilio Vaticano II y el Papa Pablo VI, que dijo: “Si quieres paz, trabaja por justicia”. Y hoy, escucho al obispo Mark Seitz llamarnos a defender la santidad de cada vida humana: “La Iglesia Católica está comprometida a defender la santidad de cada vida humana y la dignidad dada por Dios a cada persona, independientemente de su nacionalidad o estatus migratorio”. (22 de enero de 2025)

Esta mañana, volví a leer el discurso inaugural del presidente John F. Kennedy en 1961. Fue después de su famosa frase sobre “hacer por su país” que más me conmovió. Fue su declaración final, justo después de su famosa frase sobre “hacer por su país” la frase que unió el orgullo nacional y el orgullo por la fe. Deseo que los políticos y todas las personas de hoy tomen en serio sus palabras.

“Finalmente, ya sean ciudadanos de Estados Unidos o ciudadanos del mundo, pídannos los mismos altos estándares de fortaleza y sacrificio que les pedimos a ustedes. National Pride and Pride in My Faith

I have long been invested in national pride and pride in my Catholic faith. I am an idealist. As a young man, the words of President John F. Kennedy were inspiring as he said, “Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country.” I was inspired by the dream of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. I heard the call to renewal in the Church as initiated by the Second Vatican Council, and Pope Paul VI saying, “If you want peace, work for justice.” And today, I listen to Bishop Mark Seitz call on us to defend the sanctity of every human life, “The Catholic Church is committed to defending the sanctity of every human life and the God-given dignity of each person, regardless of nationality or immigration status.” (Jan. 22, 2025)

This morning, I reread the inaugural address of President John F. Kennedy in 1961. It was after his famous line about “doing for your country” that I was most moved. It was his closing statement, right after his famous line about “doing for your country”, he brought together national pride and faith. I wish that politicians and all people today would take his words to heart.

“Finally, whether you are citizens of America or citizens of the world, ask of us the same high standards of strength and sacrifice which we ask of you. With a good conscience our only sure reward, with history the final judge of our deeds, let us go forth to lead the land we love, asking His blessing and His help, but knowing that here on earth God’s work must truly be our own.” (Inaugural Address, 1961)

Jesús les dijo: “Tengan ánimo, soy yo; no tengan miedo” (Mt. 14:27).

Cuando Jesús dijo: “No tengan miedo”, estaba hablando a los Apóstoles. Les dijo que “tengan ánimo”. Ayer, la obispa Mariann Budde le dijo al presidente Trump: “Permítanme hacer una última súplica. En el nombre de nuestro Dios, les pido que tengan misericordia de las personas de nuestro país que ahora tienen miedo”. Fue bueno escuchar a una persona de fe ponerse de pie y hablar por aquellos que tienen miedo. Doy cuenta que tengo miedo por las personas con las que he caminado durante los últimos treinta y cinco años.

El presidente Trump exige una disculpa de la obispa Budde. Es una vergüenza para cualquiera que lo defienda en este asunto. Lo que ella dijo no era político. Era bíblico. Era cristiano. Y era la verdad. Cuando Jesús dijo las palabras “no tengan miedo”, estaba hablando a los Apóstoles. No se las dijo a los pobres, sino a aquellos que podían hacer algo por aquellos que tienen miedo. “Tengan ánimo”. La obispo Budde demostró valentía, pero sospecho que ella no lo identificaría como tal. Es la fe y la esperanza lo que mueve a uno a hablar como ella lo hizo.

Why do we fear?

Jesus spoke to them, “Take courage, it is I; do not be afraid.” (Mt. 14:27)

When Jesus said, “Do not be afraid”, he was speaking to the Apostles. He told them to “take courage”. Yesterday, Bishop Mariann Budde spoke to President Trump, “Let me make one final plea. In the name of our God, I ask you to have mercy upon the people in our country who are scared now.” It was good to hear a person of faith stand up and speak for those who are scared. I know that I am afraid for the people with whom I have walked for the past thirty-five years.

President Trump demands an apology from Bishop Budde. Shame on anyone who defends him on this matter. What she said was not political. It was scriptural. It was Christian. And it was truth. When Jesus said the words, “do not be afraid”, he was speaking to the Apostles. It was not said to the poor, but to those who could do something for those who fear. “Take courage”. Bishop Budde showed courage, but I suspect that she would not identify it as courage. It is faith and hope that moves one to speak as she did.

Es reconfortante escuchar a la obispa Mariann Budde decirle la verdad al poder. Es obvio que el presidente Trump y el vicepresidente Vance rechazan el mensaje de Jesús. Deseo que más líderes religiosos, incluso dentro de nuestra fe católica, reconozcan nuestra preocupación cristiana por “Dios ha elegido lo que es común y despreciado en este mundo, lo que es nada” (1 Cor. 1:28).

“Go and learn the meaning of the words, ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice.’ I did not come to call the righteous but sinners.” (Mt. 9:13)

It is refreshing to hear Bishop Mariann Budde speaking truth to power. It is obvious that President Trump and Vice-President Vance reject the message of Jesus. I wish that more religious leaders, including within our Catholic faith recognize our Christian concern for “the lowly and despised of the world, those who count for nothing”. (1 Cor. 1:28)

Guía para abordar los desafíos de la migración

En “Discípulos Misioneros en Salida con Alegría”, un Plan pastoral nacional para el ministerio hispano/latino, los obispos de los Estados Unidos identificaron cuatro principios para guiar a la Iglesia en prestar atención pastoral a los migrantes e inmigrantes. Si bien la preocupación principal de este documento es la atención pastoral, podría guiar a todos a comprender y responder al movimiento de migrantes en todo el mundo. El documento identifica cuatro claves para abordar los desafíos de la migración:

  1. Escuchar: Esta es una señal de respeto. No se puede hacer con desinformación, prejuicio, miedo o ira.
  2. Diálogo: Esto requiere una voluntad de entablar una conversación, un dar y recibir. Una voluntad de aprender unos de otros.
  3. Discernir: Considerar opciones y buscar “lo bueno”. Aun que no sea perfecto. Aquí es cuando la ética y la moralidad guían a quienes participan en el diálogo.
  4. Acompañamiento: Así como Dios camina con el migrante, también debemos caminar con él. Se necesita coraje para caminar con personas en la periferia de la sociedad y de la Iglesia.

Al considerar estas claves para el ministerio, también son claves para la sociedad. Los desafíos nacionales e internacionales de nuestro tiempo necesitan personas dispuestas a hacer los sacrificios necesarios por el bien común. Reconociendo los peligros de nuestro tiempo, vivamos con respeto hacia todas las personas como hijos de Dios y nuestros hermanos y hermanas.

Guide to addressing migration challenges

In “Missionary Disciples Going Forth with Joy”, a National Pastoral Plan for Hispanic/Latino Ministry, the USCCB identifies four principles to guide the Church in providing pastoral care for migrants and immigrants. While this document’s primary concern is about pastoral care, it could guide everyone in understanding and responding to the global migration of people today. The document identifies four keys to addressing migration challenges:

  1. Listen: This is a sign of respect. It cannot be done with misinformation, prejudice, fear or anger.
  2. Dialogue: This requires a willingness to engage in conversation, a give and take. A willingness to learn from one another.
  3. Discern: Consider options and seek “the good.” It may not be “the perfect”. This is when ethics and morality guide those engaged in dialogue.
  4. Accompaniment: As God walks with the migrant, we must also walk with the migrant. It takes courage to walk with people on the periphery of society and the Church.

As we consider these keys for ministry, they are also keys for society. The national and international challenges of our time need people willing to make sacrifices needed for the common good. Recognizing the dangers of our time, may we live with respect for all people as children of God and our brothers and sisters.

Después de un descanso

Solo he escrito un par de blogs en las últimas dos semanas. Mi hermano, Roberto, falleció después de Navidad, y entre viajes a Denver para estar con miembros de la familia para su funeral, comencé una asignación para tomar el lugar de un sacerdote durante cinco semanas mientras él se iba para pasar tiempo con la familia. Quiero agradecer a todos los que me enviaron condolencias a mí y a nuestra familia. Necesitaba tomarme un tiempo para la familia y adaptarme a la asignación a una parroquia rural en Oklahoma. Fue bueno tener un tiempo de no escribir blogs.

Como sacerdote, en la celebración de funerales, una de las lecturas favoritas para los funerales es Jn. 11:19-27, la historia de Marta hablando con Jesús: “Señor, si hubieras estado aquí, mi hermano no habría muerto. Pero aun así, yo sé que puedes pedir a Dios cualquier cosa, y Dios te la concederá”. Jesús le dijo: “Tu hermano resucitará”. Marta le respondió: “Ya sé que será resucitado en la resurrección de los muertos, en el último día”. Le dijo Jesús: “Yo soy la resurrección y la vida; El que cree en mí, aunque muera, vivirá”.

La lectura adquirió un significado especial para mí cuando leí este pasaje en el funeral de mi propio hermano. Las Escrituras siempre nos hablan, pero hay momentos en que uno las toma más en serio. Oramos por la persona fallecida, pero nuestra presencia en el funeral es para los miembros de la familia.

Desde el funeral, me encuentro prestando más atención a las relaciones en la vida que son especialmente importantes. En mi trabajo, es fácil quedar atrapado en las luchas de las personas a las que sirvo en el ministerio. Trabajo con personas que viven al margen de la sociedad y de la Iglesia. Son los olvidados y a menudo maltratados por la sociedad. Hay muchas cosas que hacer en el ministerio, pero lo más importante es recordar la dignidad y la fe de cada persona que conozco. Reflexionar sobre las vidas de aquellos cuyo recuerdo celebramos nos recuerda que debemos recordar tratar a cada persona que encontramos como nuestro hermano y hermana.

Que la paz llegue a todos los que están cuidando a sus seres queridos en sus últimos días y a los que han fallecido antes que nosotros.

After a break

I have only written a couple blogs over the past two weeks. My brother, Bob, passed away after Christmas, and in between trips to Denver to be with family members for his funeral, I began an assignment to take a priest’s place for five weeks as he went away for family time. I want to thank all of those who sent condolences to me and to our family. I needed to take time for family and adjusting to the assignment to a rural parish in Oklahoma. It was good to take time away from writing blogs.

As a priest, I have celebrated many funerals and one of my favorite readings for funerals is Jn. 11:19-27, the story of Martha speaking with Jesus, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died. But even now I know that whatever you ask of God, God will give you.” Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise.” Martha said to him, “I know he will rise, in the resurrection on the last day.” Jesus told her, “I am the resurrection and the life; whoever believes in me, even if he dies, will live.”

The reading took on particular meaning for me as I read this passage at my own brother’s funeral. Scripture always speaks to us, but there are times when one takes it more seriously. We pray for the deceased person, but our presence at the funeral is for the family members.

Since the funeral, I find myself paying more attention to the relationships in life that are especially important. In my work, it is easy to get caught up in the struggles of people whom I serve in ministry. I work with people on the margins of society and the Church. They are the forgotten and often mistreated of society. There are many things to do in the ministry, but most important is remembering the dignity and faith of each person whom I meet. Reflecting on the lives of those whose memory we celebrate reminds us of remembering to treat each and every person we encounter as our brother and sister.

May peace come to all who are caring for loved ones in their last days and for those who have passed before us.

Llamados a servir

Si yo, siendo el Señor y el Maestro, les he lavado los pies, ustedes deben lavarse los pies unos a otros. (Jn. 13:14)

Jesús llamó a sus discípulos a servir. Hubo un tiempo en que parecía que los políticos al menos intentaban servir a sus electores. Da miedo vivir en una época en la que la política es tan irresponsable como lo es hoy. Cuando ocurre una tragedia, como un evento terrorista en Nueva Orleans, los incendios en Los Ángeles, los huracanes en Florida y las Carolinas, o un tiroteo en una escuela, necesitamos líderes que reconozcan su llamado a servir. Lamentablemente, con un nuevo presidente que busca culpar a otros e ignora las crisis humanas en nuestra nación, vivimos en una época triste.

Cuando necesitamos servidores políticos, no necesitamos amenazar a Groenlandia, Panamá, Canadá y México. Que Dios nos dé líderes servidores.

Called to serve

If I, the master and teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash one another’s feet. (Jn. 13:14)

Jesus called his disciples to serve. There was a time when it appeared that politicians at least tried to serve their constituents. It is scary living in a time when politics is so irresponsible as it is today. When tragedy strikes such as a terror event in New Orleans, the fires in Los Angeles, hurricanes in Florida and the Carolinas, or a school shooting we need leaders who recognize their call to serve. Sadly, with a new President seeking to blame others and ignoring the human crises around our nation, we live in a sad time.

When we have need of political servants, we do not need to threaten Greenland, Panama, Canada and Mexico. May God give us servant leaders.
