Solemnity of the Most Holy Redeemer

On this day Redemptorists recall our charism and commitment to one another as brothers in the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer. Our mission is to work for the “Evangelization of the poor.” Our Constitutions and Statues say, “The most abandoned, to whom in particular the Congregation is sent, are those for whom the Church has not yet been able to provide sufficient means of salvation, those who have never heard the Church’s message, or at least do not receive it as the “Good News”, and finally those who suffer harm because of division in the Church.”

Who are the people who have never heard the Church’s message? I used to think it was people in distant foreign lands where there have been few missionaries or having governments hostile to the message of Christ, but today, I worry about people who believe that they have heard Christ’s message, they proclaim that they are “Christian”, but express open hostility to the poor, the migrant, the non-participant in our Church services, the person judged as unworthy of our time and love.

When I professed vows as a Redemptorist, being sent to “those who suffer harm because of division in the Church” meant to be ecumenical, to be concerned about reaching out to people of other churches. Today, the division in the Church is closer to home. There is so much division within our Church that we need not look at other religions. Because the word “migrant” is part of the title of the ministry that I represent in working for the Catholic Migrant Farmworker Network, I have experienced hostility to my work by some Catholics. One person said, “You should be a real priest and work for the Church, Father.” Evidently, for him, caring for the poor and the abandoned is not Christian.

At the Last Supper, Jesus prayed to the Father to protect his flock. He told us to “love one another as I have loved you.” On this feast of the Most Holy Redeemer, pray for all Redemptorists and the followers of our charism to work for the most abandoned, especially those who do not believe that the message of Jesus is “Good News.”

O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
