Una lección de responsabilidad
Mi abuelo era carpintero. Aprendió carpintería de su padre. Todos los días, cuando volvía a casa del trabajo, limpiaba sus herramientas y afilaba sus sierras. Grabó en cada herramienta sus iniciales y el año en que se compró la herramienta. No arrojó sierras viejas. Murió casi treinta años después de jubilarse. Al pasar por su banco de trabajo, encontramos sus sierras viejas envueltas en hule. Estaban afilados y listos para usar. Había sierras con sus iniciales familiares, fechadas desde 1907 hasta la década de 1950. Algunas de las hojas se rectificaron a menos de 12 pulgadas. Su taller fue una lección de cuidado y responsabilidad. Ser responsable prepara para el mañana y dura toda la vida.
Los trabajosos
Un día, al visitar un huerto, experimenté una lección diferente. Había una familia empacando y saliendo de la vivienda del campamento de un huerto el cuarto o quinto día de la cosecha. Le pregunté al mayordomo por qué se iban. Dijo: “Son trabajosos”. Al principio, estaba confundido. No entendía. El Mayordomo dijo que los trabajosos eran trabajadores indisciplinados que dañaban la fruta, dañaban los árboles y le provocaban más trabajo que ayuda. Se les advirtió varias veces al día durante tres días. Despidió a dos de ellos y tres más salieron con ellos.
Los dos trabajadores recogieron la cereza sin cabo. La fruta no vale por la marqueta. Rompieron ramas y arrancaron muchas hojas que expusieron a los árboles a enfermedades y disminuyeron la producción en el futuro. También se perdieron mucha fruta en su prisa. No solo perdieron sus trabajos, sino que otros tres que vinieron con ellos perdieron la oportunidad de trabajar.
Responsabilidad, virtud de por vida
Las viejas sierras de mi abuelo, todavía afiladas hoy, continúan enseñando a sus nietos, bisnietos y más. Ser responsable honra cada bendición en la vida que Dios nos da.

A lesson in responsibility
My grandfather was a carpenter. He learned his trade from his father. Every day when he came home from work, he cleaned his tools, sharpened his saws. He etched into each tool his initials and the year that the tool was purchased. He did not throw away old saws. He died almost thirty years after he retired. When going through his work bench, we found his old saws, wrapped in oil cloth. They were sharp and ready for use. There were saws with his familiar initials, dated 1907 to the 1950’s. Some of the blades were ground to less than 12 inches. His workshop was a lesson in care and responsibility. Being responsible prepares for tomorrow and lasts a lifetime.
Los trabajosos
One day visiting an orchard, I experienced a different lesson. There was a family packing up and leaving the camp housing of an orchard on the fourth or fifth day of a harvest. I asked the foreman why they were leaving. He said, “They are trabajosos.” At first, I was confused as trabajador means worker. The foreman said the trabajosos were undisciplined workers who damaged the fruit, damaged the trees and caused him more work than help. They were warned several times each day for three days. He fired two of them and the whole family decided to leave.
The two workers picked a large quantity of fruit, but in doing so, they bruised the fruit causing too much fruit to be rejected from the market. They broke branches and stripped away bark and leaves that exposed trees to disease and decreased production in the future. They also missed fruit on the trees in their haste. They not only lost their jobs, but three others who came with them lost the opportunity to work.
Responsibility, a virtue for life
My grandfather’s old saws, still sharp today, continue to teach his grandchildren and their children. To be responsible honors every blessing in life that God gives us.

O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
