Be responsible – Sé responsable

“Mission for a Wounded World”
As I offer a parish mission that is called, “A Mission for a Wounded World”, there have been three traditional themes from the mission. 1. The Word of God invites us to take more to heart the sacred Scriptures. 2. The Incarnation considered the birth of Christ and Mary as a model of being the “handmaid of the Lord.” 3. Our third day called attention to Jesus’ life, teaching and hope in the resurrection. 4. The fourth theme considers Jesus as the Light of the World. In this time of woundedness in the world, how can the Christian be light for the world, the salt of the earth.
For the past few days, we considered Pope Francis calling on us to be bold, be creative. We considered the need to be compassionate. For the next few days, let us consider what it means to be; responsible, merciful, generous, silent, noble, prayerful. I reflect on these themes based on experiences with people often on the margins of the church and society. The next mission theme is: how can we be light for the world?
Be Responsible
One of the alumni of our youth community, Casa San Alfonso, said that at the Casa from 1991 to 1996 he gained “self-respect, respect for other and responsibility.” Thirty years later, alumni from the Casa reunited in August to remember the days of Casa San Alfonso. I admit that when we ran Casa San Alfonso, there were many times of doubt and disillusionment. We had great moments, but there were challenges and some disappointments. The memories of a man who focused on gaining respect and responsibility was not always seen in youth ministry. Young people made mistakes, we made mistakes and we wondered if our efforts were making a difference.
As a Redemptorist missionary, my ministry has often not been obviously religious action. Listening to the poor, trying to help someone in danger of deportation, comforting someone who has suffered abuse, visiting the imprisoned and comforting those who mourn are products of religious commitment, but the struggles are not overtly religious. The pulpit, the classroom and the confessional are obviously religious, but true responsibility in faith takes place on the street. Being responsible focuses not on the action, but on being salt of the earth and light for the world.
It was after teaching on the Beatitudes that Jesus said, “You are the salt of the earth. You are the light of the world.” (Mt. 5:13-14) At the moment that we respond to a person in need, our motivation comes from our being. Being responsible, taking care of the other is based on our being guided by faith.
May we be salt of the earth, and light of the world.
