Asignado a México

por el Padre Miguel McAndrew, C.Ss.R.

Hoy volaré a Ciudad Obregón, Sonora.

Assigned to Mexico

by Fr. Mike McAndrew, C.Ss.R.

Today, I will fly to Ciudad Obregon, Sonora. This is truly an adventure. People have asked what I will be doing, where, when. Lots of questions that I can only answer, “I don’t know.” We, Redemptorists, seek to respond to the international crisis of global migration, asking ourselves what our Redemptorist charism can offer to people experiencing migration. Our concerns are not only for the people fleeing disasters in their home countries, but also the care of the volunteers from many nations seeking to aid the refugee community.

It is a privilege to be asked by my Provincial, “Could you go to Mexico?” I have had many experiences in working with migrants and immigrants, but mostly with people who have already been in the United States for several to many years. Most of my work has been with people from Mexico. The concern that we seek to address is foreign nationals who presently live in Mexico. Our concern is for their spiritual, emotional and social well-being.

It is important that we listen to the people tell their stories. We have not walked with them in the struggles that forced them to seek a life in another country. We need to let them guide us in understanding their motivations, their values, their needs and their faith.

I have been blessed by so many who have shown me the values, the hopes and dreams of earlier migrants living and working here. The recipients of our attention come from many parts of the world. For my part, this means learning about many nations, cultures, religions and traditions. As of today, I am on an adventure, and I do not know where it may lead me.

O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
