The Road to Emmaus / El camino a Emaús

The Road to Emmaus / El camino a Emaús

The Road to Emmaus

This year, I have considered a question about the two disciples who met Jesus on the road to Emmaus. One was named Cleopas and the other was unnamed. After they met Jesus on the road, they returned to Jerusalem to announce to the Apostles that they met the Lord. In Jerusalem, they heard the news of the others. We do not hear about the disciples of Emmaus again. I wonder about their eventual return to Emmaus. I imagine that when they finally did go to Emmaus, they not only returned with the joy of the resurrection, as witnesses to the Resurrection, going to Emmaus again must have returned with excitement to tell their story to others.

I am anticipating my own new mission, going to Mexico to discover the lives of foreign nationals living as migrants in México. It is not just to discover the past of the migrants, but to learn of their faith, their values, their hopes, their dreams, the crosses on their paths and their experience of redemption.

Work with migrants is almost always a ministry of the moment. One responds to urgent needs of people whose lives is marked with uncertainty. It is rewarding to help a person in need. The assignment that I have today is to prepare a sustained effort by Redemptorists to evangelize and to be evangelized by people of migration. It challenges me in new ways, as we prepare for a mission that seeks to journey with migrants as they move from the emergency needs of a crisis to rebuilding their lives in a new nation. The mission is exciting and challenging. Pray for us.

O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
