Un tiempo para elegir
El segundo capítulo de Soñaremos Juntos ofrece la mejor explicación de JUZGAR (JUEZ) que he visto. En lugar de juzgar, habla de discernimiento. Dice que hay tres criterios esenciales para el discernimiento: 1) saber que somos amados por Dios, llamados a ser un pueblo al servicio y a la solidaridad, 2) una sana capacidad de reflexión silenciosa, un refugio de la tiranía de lo urgente, y 3) oración, para escuchar los impulsos del Espíritu y cultivar el diálogo en una comunidad que pueda sostenernos y permitirnos soñar.
“Una crisis es casi siempre el resultado del olvido de uno mismo, y el camino a seguir pasa por recordar nuestras raíces”. (p. 51) Recordar nuestras raíces nos saca de nosotros mismos y nos llama a la solidaridad con los demás, especialmente con los pobres. La Iglesia afirma una “opción preferencial por los pobres”. “Cuando la Iglesia habla del bien común, nos pide que tengamos en cuenta el bien de la sociedad en su conjunto”. (p. 52-3) Nuestras decisiones deben tener en cuenta el impacto sobre los pobres. “Los bienes de la vida (tierra, techo y trabajo) deben estar disponibles para todos (p. 53).
Como los bienes de este mundo son para todas las personas, la opción por los pobres no es simplemente una cuestión de dar cosas esenciales para la vida como tierra, techo y trabajo. Se trata de permitir que los pobres ocupen su lugar para mejorar nuestro mundo. “Los pobres no son objeto de nuestras buenas intenciones, sino sujetos de cambio. No solo actuamos por los pobres sino con ellos”. (pág.53)
Pope Francis gives a balanced view of the world. A rigid mindset closes one to asking the right questions. We must address a closed mindset. “Discernment is vital if we want to create a better future.
El Papa Francisco ofrece una visión equilibrada del mundo. Una mentalidad rígida lo cierra a uno para hacer las preguntas correctas. Se necesita abordar una mentalidad cerrada. “El discernimiento es vital si queremos crear un futuro mejor.”

A Time to Choose
The second chapter of Let Us Dream gives the best explanation of JUZGAR (JUDGE) that I have seen. Instead of judge, he speaks of discernment. He says that there are three criteria essential for discernment: 1) knowing that we are loved by God, called to be a people in service and solidarity, 2) a healthy capacity for silent reflection, a refuge from the tyranny of the urgent, and 3) prayer, to hear the prompts of the Spirit and cultivate dialogue in a community that can hold us and allow us to dream.
“A crisis is almost always the result of self-forgetting, and the way forward comes through recalling our roots.” (p. 51)Recalling our roots takes us outside of ourselves and calls us to solidarity with others, especially with the poor. The Church claims to have a “preferential option for the poor.” “When the Church speaks of the common good, it asks us to have regard for the good of society as a whole.” (p. 52-3) Our decisions need to keep in mind the impact on the poor. “The goods of life – land, lodging and labor – should be made available to all. (p.53)
As the goods of this world are for all people, the option for the poor is not simply a matter of giving essential things for living such as land, lodging and labor. It is a matter of allowing the poor to take their place in changing our world for the better. “The poor are not the object of our good intentions but the subjects of change. We do not just act for the poor but with them.” (p. 53)

O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
