Usando los deportes para el ministerio
Mamá dijo una vez: “Todo lo que siempre quisiste fue una pelota”. Cuando era niño, quería una pelota de béisbol, de baloncesto o de fútbol. Mis mejores regalos para cumpleaños o Navidad fueron un guante de béisbol nuevo o algún otro equipo deportivo. Siempre estaba listo para jugar un juego. Siendo el niño más pequeño de mi clase, no tuve muchas oportunidades de jugar en los equipos de nuestra escuela secundaria parroquial. Ingresé al Seminario Preparatorio de San José y allí me introdujeron al fútbol soccer. No tenías que ser un gigante para jugar fútbol, y yo tuve mi oportunidad no solo de jugar, sino de sobresalir.
Nuestro Seminario tenía algunos equipos de fútbol bastante buenos y vencimos a bastantes escuelas que eran mucho más grandes que la nuestra. Cuando fui ordenado, fui a la parroquia de San José en Wichita, KS. Un domingo, dos hombres que habían sido seminaristas conmigo me preguntaron si quería jugar en un equipo de fútbol que habían formado recientemente. En mi primer juego, aseguraron a algunos mexicanos de nuestro equipo que “Padre podía jugar”. Estuve al margen durante los primeros cuarenta minutos del partido. A cinco minutos del descanso, entré. Hice dos goles en cinco minutos y de ahí en adelante fui parte del equipo.
Disfruté jugando en el equipo, y teníamos el mejor equipo de la ciudad. Un periódico quería hacer una historia sobre nuestro equipo en marzo de 1975. Recientemente alguien me envió una copia del periódico y una de las fotos era mía después del partido. Es la imagen de arriba.
Al recordar mis tres años en ese equipo, me doy cuenta de que aunque jugar fútbol no era un ministerio, los muchachos con los que jugaba recuerdan tener un sacerdote en su equipo. Significaba algo especial para ellos. Durante mis años como sacerdote, jugué fútbol, hockey, baloncesto y softbol en equipos con amigos, feligreses y jóvenes. Pasar tiempo con los feligreses en deportes, pesca, campamentos, caminatas y otros pasatiempos me abrió caminos para ministerio. A medida que la gente se sentía cómoda conmigo en tales pasatiempos, muchos se volvieron activos en mis ministerios como participantes en la iglesia y también como voluntarios en el ministerio.

Mom once said, “All you ever wanted was a ball.” As a child, I wanted a baseball or a basketball or a football. My best gifts for birthdays or Christmas were a new baseball glove or some other sport equipment. I was always ready to play a game. As the tiniest boy in my class, I did not have much of a chance to play on our parish high school’s teams. I entered St. Joseph’s Preparatory Seminary, and there I was introduced to soccer. You did not have to be a giant to play soccer, and I had my opportunity to not only play, but to excel.
Our Seminary had some pretty good soccer teams and we beat quite a few schools that were much larger than ours. When I was ordained, I went to St. Joseph’s parish in Wichita, KS. One Sunday, two men who had been seminarians with me asked if I wanted to play on a soccer team that they had recently started. At my first game, they assured a few Mexicans on our team that “Padre could play.” I was on the sidelines for the first forty minutes of the game. Five minutes before halftime, I went in. I had two goals in five minutes and from then on, I was part of the team.
I enjoyed playing on the team, and we did have the best team in the area. A newspaper wanted to do a story on our team in March of 1975. Recently someone sent me a copy of the newspaper and one of the photos was of me after the game. It is the picture above.
Looking back at my three years on that team, I realize that while playing soccer was not a ministry, the guys I played with remember having a priest on their team. It meant something special to them. Over my years as a priest, I played soccer, hockey, basketball, and softball on teams with friends, parishioners and youth. Spending time with parishioners in sports, fishing, camping, hiking and other pastimes opened paths for me to walk with people. As people felt comfortable with me in such pastimes, many became active in my ministries as participants in church, and also as volunteers in ministry.

Oh Jesús, tú nos llamas: “Síganme”. Bendice, Señor, a todos los que acogen tu llamado. Puede que el camino no sea fácil, pero tenemos la confianza de que todo es posible si caminamos contigo. Que este viaje nos abra los ojos a las maravillas de tu amor por nosotros. Oramos por toda tu gente, por todos los creyentes e incrédulos, por los líderes y seguidores. Oramos por la sanación, el perdón, la compasión, la justicia y la paz. Oramos para que, al seguirte, nosotros también podamos ser pescadores de hombres. Bendícenos en nuestro viaje.
O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
