La navidad inolvidable
Fue hace cuarenta años, el 24 de diciembre de 1982, cuando tuvimos una Navidad en Denver que muy poca gente que vivió en ese momento olvidará. En la mañana de la Nochebuena, el día 23 recibimos tres canastas navideñas. El hermano Paul y yo salimos temprano en la mañana para distribuir las últimas canastas de comida a las personas necesitadas. A las 9:00 de la mañana empezó a nevar. Los meteorólogos dijeron que podríamos tener entre dos y cuatro pulgadas de nieve. Diez minutos después, solo teníamos una casa más y ya había como cuatro pulgadas de nieve y el locutor de radio dijo que podíamos tener seis o más pulgadas. En quince minutos teníamos mucho más de seis pulgadas y las condiciones se estaban poniendo bastante peor. Las iglesias comenzaron a anunciar la cancelación de las Misas de Navidad y el arzobispo declaró que todas las Misas católicas se cancelaron por la Navidad.
A medida que avanzaba el día, decidimos como comunidad redentorista que nos reuniríamos todos en la Iglesia para una misa privada de medianoche. Invitamos a dos hermanas y tres hermanos religiosos que vivían cerca de la Iglesia. Había gente llamando, preguntando si tendríamos misa de medianoche. Dijimos que no sería oficial, pero que íbamos a celebrar en privado y que si alguien podía llegar a la iglesia, sería bienvenido. A las 11:30 pm abrimos la Iglesia y para la medianoche había 200 personas en la Iglesia. Algunos llegaron en snowmobiles, otros en esquís o con raquetas de nieve. Varias personas vinieron de dos o tres millas de distancia.
Algunos trajeron pasteles, pan dulce y tamales. Algunas damas prepararon café para después de la Misa. Fue una tormenta de nieve que nadie podría olvidar, pero lo más memorable fue que tal vez tuvimos la única Misa celebrada en Denver esa noche. Consideré nuestra Navidad inolvidable y espero que muchos de los que sufrieron el frío de este invierno tengan gratos recuerdos de esta Navidad inolvidable.

The unforgettable Christmas
It was forty years ago, December 24, 1982 when we had a Christmas in Denver that very few people who lived at the time will forget. On Christmas Eve morning, we had three Christmas food baskets given to us on the 23rd. Brother Paul and I went out early in the morning to deliver the last of our food baskets to people in need. At 9:00 am it began to snow. The weathermen said that we could get two to four inches of snow. After the second home, we came out and there were already about four inches of snow and the radio announcer said we could get six of more inches of snow. Within another fifteen minutes we had much more than six inches and conditions were getting pretty bad. Churches began announcing cancelation of Christmas Masses and the Archbishop declared that all Catholic Masses were canceled for Christmas.
As the day progressed, we decided as a Redemptorist community that we would all gather in the Church for a private midnight Mass. We invited two religious sisters and some Christian Brothers who lived close to the Church. There were people calling, asking if we would have Midnight Mass. We said, it would be unofficial, but we were going to celebrate privately and if anyone was able to get to the Church, they would be welcome. At 11:30 pm we opened the Church and by Midnight there were 200 people in the Church. A few came on snowmobiles, some came on cross country skis or on snowshoes. Several people came from two or three miles away.
Some brought baked goods and tamales. A few ladies prepared coffee for after the Mass. It was a snowstorm than no one could forget, but more memorable was that we may have had the only Mass celebrated in Denver that evening. I considered our unforgettable Christmas and hope that many who suffered the cold of this winter have fond memories of this unforgettable Christmas.

O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
