Carta de Navidad
Feliz Navidad a lectores de Padre Migrante, amigos y familiares,
Que el próximo año sea tan bendecido para ustedes como el año pasado fue para mí. La Navidad pasada me regocijé por la bendita experiencia de celebrar el trigésimo aniversario de la fundación de Casa San Alfonso. La comunidad de Casa San Alfonso estaba formada por jóvenes del centro de la ciudad de Denver en 1991. En esa comunidad aprendí español. Dimos la bienvenida a los jóvenes a nuestras vidas, pero lo que es más importante, ellos nos recibieron a nosotros en sus vidas. El aniversario celebrado el 1 de agosto de 2021 fue el mejor día de mi vida como sacerdote. Fue la gratitud de quienes hicieron de Casa San Alfonso su hogar de 1991 a 1996, lo que me abrumó. El año pasado para mí estuvo lleno de gratitud.
En abril de este año fui a México para pasar cuatro meses estudiando la situación de las personas extranjeras migrantes que viven en México. Nuestro comité de estudio visitó albergues para migrantes y centros de servicio en las ciudades de México y en la frontera entre Estados Unidos y México. Fue un tiempo de estudio, pero sobre todo fue un tiempo de caminar con los solicitantes de asilo y los refugiados. Estoy muy agradecido con mis superiores provinciales por darme este tiempo para visitar las nueve diócesis mexicanas en la frontera. Me ayudó a apreciar la compleja realidad de la migración global, aunque aprendí que no hay respuestas fáciles a los desafíos que enfrenta el mundo con la migración. Llegué a conocer la bondad de las personas que buscan una vida mejor para ellos y sus familias.
Después de completar el estudio de migración, nuestra Provincia concluyó nuestro año de discernimiento y votación para el nuevo liderazgo provincial. Mientras eso sucedía, me encontré reflexionando sobre mi 50 aniversario de ordenación en 2023. “¿Qué espero hacer en mis últimos años de ministerio?” Si bien tuve la suerte de ser parte del estudio de migración, comencé a preguntarme cómo se puede utilizar mejor mi experiencia trabajando con trabajadores campesinos migrantes e inmigrantes rurales. Una visita a Yuma, Arizona para observar a los trabajadores recolectando repollo y lechuga, abrió mi corazón una vez más al trabajador agrícola migrante. Ojalá, Dios me mostrara cómo caminar una vez más con el trabajador rural inmigrante.
Fui a Baton Rouge, Luisiana el 1 de diciembre para ayudar a nuestro apostolado hispano redentorista mientras nuestro electo provincial se muda a Chicago. Al mismo tiempo, comencé a comunicarme con la Red Católica de Campesinos Migrantes sobre un posible puesto. Todavía hay algunos problemas por resolver, pero trabajaré con CMFN. Abrirme el camino para trabajar una vez más con Campesinos migrantes es mi mayor regalo de Navidad este año.
A todos mis amigos que trabajan en los campos, y aquellos que trabajan en el ministerio migrante, espero verlos y caminar con ustedes una vez más. Que todos tengan una bendita Navidad.

Christmas Letter
Merry Christmas to readers of Padre Migrante, friends and family,
May the coming year be as blessed for you as the past year has been for me. Last Christmas, I rejoiced at the blessed experience of celebrating the thirtieth anniversary of the founding of Casa San Alfonso. The community of Casa San Alfonso was made up of youth from the inner city of Denver in 1991. The young people were in their teens and twenties. It was in that community that I learned Spanish. We welcomed the youth into our lives, but more importantly they welcomed us into their lives. The anniversary celebrated August 1, 2021 was the best day in my life as a priest. It was the gratitude of those who made Casa San Alfonso their home from 1991 to 1996, that overwhelmed me. Last year for me was filled with gratitude.
In April of this year, I went to Mexico to spend four months studying the situation of migrant foreign nationals living in Mexico. Our study committee visited migrant shelters and service centers in the cities of Mexico and on the United States / Mexico border. It was a time of study, but especially it was a time to walk with asylum seekers and refugees. I am so grateful to my Provincial superiors for giving me this time to visit all nine Mexican dioceses on the United States border. It helps appreciate the complex reality of global migration, even though one learns that there are no easy answers to the challenges the world faces with migration, one comes to know the goodness of people seeking better lives for themselves and their families.
After completing our migration study, our Province concluded our year of discernment and voting for new province leadership. While that went on, I found myself reflecting of my 50th anniversary of ordination coming up in 2023. “What do I hope to do in your senior years of ministry?” While I was blessed to be part of the migration study, I began asking how my experience in working with migrant farm workers and rural immigrants can be best used. A visit to Yuma, Arizona to observe migrant workers picking cabbage and lettuce, opened my heart once more to the migrant farm worker. If only God would show me how to once more walk with the rural immigrant worker.
I went to Baton Rouge, Louisiana on December 1 to help our Redemptorist Hispanic apostolate while our provincial elect moves to Chicago. At the same time, I began communicating with the Catholic Migrant Farmworker Network about a possible position. There are still some issues to work out, but I will be working with CMFN. Opening the way for me to work once again with Migrant Farm Workers is my greatest Christmas gift this year.
To all my friends working in the fields, and those working in migrant ministry, I look forward to seeing you and walking with you once again. May you all have a blessed Christmas.

Oh Jesús, tú nos llamas: “Síganme”. Bendice, Señor, a todos los que acogen tu llamado. Puede que el camino no sea fácil, pero tenemos la confianza de que todo es posible si caminamos contigo. Que este viaje nos abra los ojos a las maravillas de tu amor por nosotros. Oramos por toda tu gente, por todos los creyentes e incrédulos, por los líderes y seguidores. Oramos por la sanación, el perdón, la compasión, la justicia y la paz. Oramos para que, al seguirte, nosotros también podamos ser pescadores de hombres. Bendícenos en nuestro viaje.
O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
