“The shepherds heard the angels” / “Los pastores oyeron a los ángeles”

“No teman.

(Juan 3:17)

Escuchemos a los ángeles. Nos dicen que no tengamos miedo. Hay buenas noticias. Nace un niño. Él ha venido a traer paz y alegría. Regocijémonos. Alegría para el mundo.

“The shepherds heard the angels”

What did the angels say to the shepherds? “Do not be afraid; for behold I proclaim to you good news of great joy that will be for all the people.” Let us listen to the angels, “Do not be afraid.” The weathermen say that we will have the coldest Christmas in forty years. Images of the homeless in our cities, shelters that are full, migrants and refugees struggling to survive on the border make it difficult to hear the angels. The tragedies of war in the Ukraine, the failing nations of the world and the political unrest here and abroad can overwhelm the angels’ voices.

It is time for us to stop the anger, the frustration, the racism and the fear of the future. Today, the angels announce, “good news of great joy.” A child is born, new life has come, and it gives all the world joy. When Pope Francis wrote the Joy of the Gospel, he reminded us that God’s message in sending his Son amongst us is good news. Jesus says of himself that “God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world might be saved.” (Jn 3:17)

Let us listen to the angels. They tell us to not be afraid. There is good news. A child is born. He has come to bring peace and joy. Let us rejoice. Joy to the World.

O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
