Nuestro problema migrante
Habiendo trabajado con migrantes e inmigrantes durante los últimos treinta años, muchas buenas personas preguntan “¿Cuál es la solución a la crisis de la inmigración? No podemos admitir a todos”. A menudo, simplemente digo: “No lo sé”. He vivido con migrantes que viven en ciudades, en pueblos pequeños y en comunidades rurales. Trabajé con jóvenes de un barrio pobre. Estudié leyes de inmigración para ayudar a las personas a solicitar alivio para su estatus migratorio. Testifiqué en los tribunales de inmigración. En un año sabático, recogí fruta y viví en campamentos de migrantes durante un verano. Coordiné programas sacramentales para campesinos y sus familias. Prediqué misiones bilingües en quince estados.
Después de treinta años, doy cuenta de que la solución para servir a los migrantes no se realizará a través de la política, el trabajo social, la educación o el servicio religioso mientras abordemos al migrante como un problema. El migrante no es un problema para resolver, sino una persona a la que servir.
En la Última Cena, Jesús lavó los pies de sus discípulos. Después de hacerlo, dijo: “¿Comprenden lo que acabo de hacer con ustedes? Ustedes me llaman Maestro y Señor, y dicen bien, porque lo soy. Pues si yo, que soy el Maestro y el Señor, les he lavado los pies, también ustedes deben lavarse los pies los unos a los otros. Les he dado ejemplo, para que lo que yo he hecho con ustedes, también ustedes lo hagan”. (Juan 13:13-15)
Los migrantes emigran de sus países de origen por diferentes motivos. Algunos huyen de condiciones en las que sus vidas están en constante peligro debido a la guerra, la persecución o los desastres naturales. Nuestra respuesta a las crisis humanitarias en todo el mundo gana titulares y pasión. Otros huyen de condiciones de declive y desesperación. A veces, las razones son pandemias devastadoras, crisis del cambio climático, fracaso de los gobiernos para brindar seguridad, educación y atención esencial a su gente.
No hay una sola solución a los problemas de la migración, pero podemos decidir caminar con ellos como nuestros hermanos y hermanas. Ver la multitud de migrantes en el mundo nos distrae de servir al que encontramos hoy. Comencemos por ver al migrante, en lugar de ver solo un problema migratorio.

Our migrant problem
Having worked with migrants and immigrants for the past thirty years, many good people ask “What is the solution to the immigration crisis? We can’t take in everyone.” Often, I simply say, “I don’t know.” I have lived and walked with migrants living in major cities, in small towns, and in rural communities. I worked with inner city youth on the streets. I studied immigration law to help people petition relief for their immigration status. I testified in immigration courts. On a sabbatical, I picked crops and lived in migrant camps for a summer. I coordinated sacramental programs for seasonal harvest workers. I have preached bilingual missions in fifteen states.
After thirty years, I realize that the solution to serving and helping people of migration will not be realized through politics, social work, education or religious service as long as we approach the migrant as a problem. The migrant is not a problem to be solved, but a person to be served.
At the Last Supper, Jesus washed the feet of his disciples. After doing so, he said, “Do you realize what I have done for you? You call me ‘teacher’ and ‘master,’ and rightly so, for indeed I am. If I, therefore, the master and teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash one another’s feet. I have given you a model to follow, so that as I have done for you, you should also do.” (Jn. 13:13-15)
Migrants emigrate from their countries of origin for different reasons. Some are fleeing conditions where their lives are in constant danger because of war, persecution or natural disaster. Our response to humanitarian crises around the world gains headlines and passion. Others flee conditions of long-standing decline and desperation. Sometimes the reasons are devastating pandemics, climate change crisis, failure of governments to provide for the security, education and essential care of its people.
There is not one solution to the problems of migration, but we can resolve to walk with them as our brothers and sisters. Seeing the multitude of migrants in the world distracts us from serving the one we meet today. Let us begin by seeing the migrant, rather than seeing only a migration problem.

Oh Jesús, tú nos llamas: “Síganme”. Bendice, Señor, a todos los que acogen tu llamado. Puede que el camino no sea fácil, pero tenemos la confianza de que todo es posible si caminamos contigo. O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
