Avanzando hacia 2023

He estado involucrado en muchos ministerios.

Moving into 2023

These last few days of 2022, I have been thinking about fifty years of priesthood. I was ordained on June 21, 1973. I have been privileged to walk with people in the best of times, but I have also accompanied people in the difficult moments of life. I have been involved in many ministries. Teaching, preaching, administering the sacraments of the Church and preparing laity to serve in many ministries are what I do as a priest. Serving the People of God is important, but more importance is presence with the People of God. Listening and walking with people is more important than any teaching I may present.

In my first eighteen years of ministry, sports, camping, going to games and activities of youth brought me into relationships with people I served. Attending meetings of alcoholics, addicts and their families exposed me to many life situations that one cannot learn in classrooms. Often, those activities seemed to be outside my ordinary ministry as a priest. I believed it was important to do those things so that I could teach and evangelize.

It was when I began to work in Hispanic ministry that I began to recognize the value of developing relationships with the people whom I served. I was told, “If you don’t walk with my people, don’t bother learning Spanish.” The words seemed harsh, but as I walked with migrant and immigrant youth, I recognized the wisdom of Fr. Lopez. I had to learn that wasting time with friends was itself a ministry. Picnics, hiking trips, taking youth to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area, playing soccer and other sports with young adults, often prepared the way for doing ordinary priestly ministry.

O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
