Poco Progreso
(EG.33)

Little Progress
EG. 32: Since I am called to put into practice what I ask of others, I too must think about a conversion of the papacy. It is my duty, as the Bishop of Rome, to be open to suggestions which can help make the exercise of my ministry more faithful to the meaning which Jesus Christ wished to give it and to the present needs of evangelization….We have made little progress in this regard. The papacy and the central structures of the universal Church also need to hear the call to pastoral conversion.
Of all the statements made in The Joy of the Gospel, this presents one of the most challenging obstacles for the Church to realize its mission. Even with a Pope who wants to call the structures of the Church to hear the call to pastoral conversion, he acknowledges that “we have made little progress in this regard.” Eight years after writing this exhortation, sadly we recognize how difficult it is to progress in this area. As the bureaucracy struggles, many challenges create separation of church structures from the lives of the faithful. The COVID pandemic, wars, political unrest, global migration, climate changes and disasters create great distress in the faith community. Meanwhile Church leaders fuss about tangential matters, rather than animating the faithful.
EG 32 (cont.): The Second Vatican Council stated that, like the ancient patriarchal Churches, episcopal conferences are in a position “to contribute in many and fruitful ways to the concrete realization of the collegial spirit”. Yet this desire has not been fully realized, since a juridical status of episcopal conferences which would see them as subjects of specific attributions, including genuine doctrinal authority, has not yet been sufficiently elaborated. Excessive centralization, rather than proving helpful, complicates the Church’s life and her missionary outreach.
Sadly, this statement is proving prophetic as the People of God continue to suffer. This section of the Joy of the Gospel, is most compelling as the very next paragraph states the most obvious truth of this chapter of the exhortation. The Church needs to abandon the complacency that says: “We have always done it this way”.(EG.33)
Consider your openness to new ways, new ideas. Pope Francis observes the sad reality of complacency, but does not give into that complacency. Tomorrow, we will conclude reflections of this selection from the Joy of the Gospel. We know in faith that Jesus still walks with us, as we continue our journey with Him.
(Tomorrow, Evangelii Gaudium, p. 33)
O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
