Lesson in Migrant Gratitude

Easter Gratitude

Among the stories of the faith of migrants seeking refuge in the United States, I will not forget Juan. He was fourteen. At that time there were many unaccompanied minors crossing our borders. Juan attended Easter Mass to thank God for his safe arrival to be with his uncle in Nebraska. I asked him what is so bad in his country than he risked his life to come here. He told the story of his father being murdered two years before in front of his mother, brother and himself. His brother was murdered two years later. His mother said, “You have to leave.” He told of crossing the dessert and walking for eight days. At one time as he was crossing, having no water, he thought that he would die. Then it rained.

His first Sunday in the U.S., Easter Sunday, he came to Mass to thank God. He greeted me at Mass each Sunday for the next few weeks. It is not often that migrants tell their stories of crossing. It is similar to soldiers coming home from war, and if they talk with anyone about their experiences of war, they only speak with fellow veterans. It was a privilege as Juan confided in me about not only his experiences, but he spoke about how important prayer was part of his crossing story. His gratitude and faith was humbling as I listened to his story.

O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
