Jesus honors the poor

The poor, the lame, the sick, the suffering, the marginalized, the leper, the tax collectors and those despised by the upper class were the people with whom Jesus spent the most time. Some came to him with great faith, some had their doubts, some were brought by religious leaders to test Jesus. Some were Jewish believers, some Samaritans and some foreigners. To several who were healed, he said, “Go, your faith has saved you.” And, they went away forgiven, healed and now they could see, not only physically, but spiritually.

He walked with the marginalized of his time and they walked with him. He sent disciples ahead to prepare the towns that he intended to visit. “The seventy-two returned rejoicing.” They said, “Even the demons are subject to us because of your name.” (Lk. 10:17) The poor shamed the Pharisees and the Scribes with their faith in Jesus.

In Mathew 25: 35-36, “For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, a stranger and you welcomed me, naked and you clothed me, ill and you cared for me, in prison and you visited me.” Jesus makes it very clear that he identifies with the poor.

When Jesus told the parable of the final judgment, the Apostles were not themselves “the hungry, the thirsty, the stranger or the naked.” They may not have been wealthy, but Jesus called on them to see him in the most forgotten people of the time. When we see the faith of the poor, we see Jesus.

My life as a Redemptorist missionary has been a privilege. Walking with migrants, and eating with workers after a day in the fields. Visiting Jesus in jails, detention centers, treatment centers and nursing homes. I wrote the book, “Migrant Faith” to honor the faith of migrants. Whenever you wish to say something about migrants and immigrants, remember to honor the faith behind their desire to create a better life for themselves and their families. To honor the poor is to honor Jesus.

O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.

“The poor have a special openness to the faith.”
