Tan poco que conozco
Hace unos días escribí en un blog, “Tan poco que conozco sobre migración”. Esperaba alguna reacción a esa declaración. Algunos pidieron aclaraciones sobre lo que quise decir. Saben cuánto tiempo he caminado con migrantes y consideran que sé mucho sobre migración. Primero, tenga en cuenta que comencé a escribir ese blog en español. En español, saber y conocer son distintas palabras por sabiduría. Uno de mis maestros distinguió a los dos de esta manera. Usamos saber para conocer el lugar de una ciudad en el mapa. Pero conocer a una ciudad indica experiencia de la ciudad y sus sabores y costumbres. Para conocer el migrante necesitar experimentar sus sentimientos, esperanzas, sueños y tristezas. Conocer es más íntima.
He caminado con migrantes e inmigrantes que viven en los Estados Unidos durante muchos años. Conozco bien el que ha llegado a un lugar indocumentado, pero tiene un lugar para vivir y trabajar. Pero no conozco bien al emigrante y la experiencia de dejar la tierra donde lo nació. Yo se de sus pruebas, luchas y dificultades, pero rara vez escucho a los migrantes contar historias sobre cruzar la frontera. De vez en cuando, alguien me da un vistazo de esa realidad. Un migrante de catorce años vino a misa el domingo siguiente a su llegada a la casa de sus familiares. Le pregunté qué lo llevó a arriesgar su vida cruzando el desierto. Él dijo: “Después de que asesinaron a mi padre y a mi hermano, supe que tenía que salir”. Habló del crimen organizado en su ciudad natal. Mientras hablaba, pude hacer una conexión emocional, un comienzo para “conocer”.
Al leer Pacem in Terris, párrafos 11-15, podemos saber de los derechos de las personas: derechos humanos, derechos a los valores morales y culturales, derecho a adorar a Dios según la conciencia y derecho a elegir libremente su camino a vivir, pero todavía no conocer la desesperación de no tener esos derechos. Es en el párrafo 25, cuando el Papa Juan XXIII habla del Derecho a Emigrar e Inmigrar, derecho que exige una apreciación más profunda del conocimiento que la simple enumeración de los derechos anteriores.
Cuando digo que hay tanto que no conozco sobre la migración, tengo que sentir la desesperación de quien está motivado a dejar su hogar, su país y su cultura para buscar la vida en un mundo desconocido. Para una persona de medios, la emigración puede ser una aventura, pero quiero “conocer” qué es lo que lo impulsa a emigrar el pobre. Quiero entender, sentir y compartir lo que se necesita para arriesgar la vida de uno para entrar en una tierra extraña, sin la promesa de que la nueva tierra me dará dignidad y derechos humanos básicos.
A veces, cuando traducimos palabras a otro idioma, necesitamos explicar los matices del idioma para que las personas puedan entender. Estoy agradecido con Dios, con mi comunidad y con los muchos migrantes que me han introducido al mundo de la migración. Tengo buenos entendimientos sobre migración, pero tengo mucho más para “conocer” la migración.

How Little I know
A few days ago, I wrote a blog, “How little I know about migration.” I expected some reaction to that statement. Some asked for clarification as to what I meant. They know how long I have walked with migrants and they consider me as knowing a lot about migration. First, note that I began writing that blog in Spanish. In Spanish, to know is translated in the verbs “saber” and “conocer”. One of my teachers distinguished the two in this way. “Saber” is to know about something. You know on a map where a city is, but you have never been there. To “conocer” a city is to have been there, walked in the environment and enjoyed it’s beauty. “Conocer” is to know someone in a much more intimate way, experiencing their feelings, hopes, dreams and sorrows.
I have walked with migrants and immigrants living in the United States for many years. I know well in the term “conocer”, but I do not know the emigrant well and the experience of leaving the land of their birth. I know about their trials, struggles and their hardships, but seldom do I hear migrants tell the stories of the crossing of borders. Once in a while, someone gives me a glimpse of that reality. A fourteen-year-old migrant came to Mass on the Sunday after he arrived at the home of his relatives. I asked what drove him to risk his life crossing the desert. He said, “After they murdered my father and my brother, I knew I had to leave.” He spoke of the organized crime in his hometown. As he spoke, I could make emotional connection, a start to “conocer”.
When reading Pacem in Terris, paragraphs 11-15, we can know the rights of people: human rights, rights to moral and cultural values, the right to worship God according to one’s conscience and the right to choose freely one’s state in life, but still not understand the desperation of not having those rights. It is in paragraph 25, when Pope John XXIII speaks of The Right to Emigrate and Immigrate, a right that demands a deeper appreciation of knowledge than simply reciting the rights above.
When I say that there is so much that I do not know about migration, it has to do with feeling the desperation of one motivated to leave home, country and culture to seek life in an unknown world. For a person of means, emigration may be an adventure, but I want to “conocer” what drives a poor person to emigrate. I want to understand, feel and share what it takes to risk one´s life to enter a strange land, with no promise that the new land will give me basic human rights and dignity.
Sometimes when we translate words into another language, we need to explain nuance in the language so that people may understand. I am grateful to God, to my community and to the many migrants who have introduced me to the world of migration. I have good knowledge about migration, but I have so much more to “conocer” migration.
Oh Jesús, tú nos llamas: “Síganme”. Bendice, Señor, a todos los que acogen tu llamado. Puede que el camino no sea fácil, pero tenemos la confianza de que todo es posible si caminamos contigo. Que este viaje nos abra los ojos a las maravillas de tu amor por nosotros. Oramos por toda tu gente, por todos los creyentes e incrédulos, por los líderes y seguidores. Oramos por la sanación, el perdón, la compasión, la justicia y la paz. Oramos para que, al seguirte, nosotros también podamos ser pescadores de hombres. Bendícenos en nuestro viaje.
O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
