Follow the Star / Sigue la estrella
Y si no puedes, Dios te ayudará a encontrar tu vocación”.

Follow the Star
(Yesterday, I reflected on my fiftieth year of priesthood. I intend to offer reflections on this anniversary occasionally throughout this year)
We call them the Three Kings, the Three Wise Men or the Magi. They followed a star to meet the newborn King of the Jews. They hardly seem like kings. They came with no army or guards. They were wise, but they came with no followers. They came as seekers rather than as leaders. They were Don Quixote, following their dream. Uncertainty was part of their journey. Yet they persevered.
The migrant who leaves his/her country of origin in search of a better life shares characteristics of the Magi. Their goal is in front of them at all times. They are willing to leave everything behind to follow the star. The migrant leaves what is known to follow the dream of a better life. They are uncertain if they may arrive at their goal. They are the Don Quixote of today. They persevere.
A young woman wanted to become an airline pilot. She went to college, and while her teachers encouraged her, many people told her that airlines would not hire her as a pilot. She was a Hispanic woman who did not come from the military. People told her that she should be a flight attendant, but she wanted to be a pilot. She went to her priest who told her, “Follow your dream until you can’t. And if you can’t, God will help you find your calling.” She continued her studies, became a pilot and today is a captain with a major Airline. She flies international flights, following her own star.
May we follow the star as the Magi. May an airline captain, inspire us not to give up. May we follow our dream, and if we cannot continue, trust that God will show us his will.

O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
