Sea generoso
Como seminarista, una de mis experiencias ministeriales fue visitar a los pobres en Milwaukee con hombres de la Sociedad de San Vicente De Paulo. El hermano Mateo siempre nos dijo que si no estábamos seguros de si una familia realmente necesitaba ayuda o nos engañaba, “en caso de duda, dánosla”. Nuestro grupo nunca tuvo una sobreabundancia de bienes para regalar, pero fuimos generosos. Podríamos limpiar todos nuestros artículos donados una semana y cuando regresamos la semana siguiente, había más que suficiente para ayudar a quienes buscaban ayuda. Hermano Mateo nos habló de los donantes que donaron bienes y que teníamos que ser generosos con quienes buscaban nuestra ayuda. Cuanto más generosos éramos con los pobres, más recursos recibimos la semana siguiente.
Aquellos días fueron bendecidos cuando dos de nosotros fuimos a ver a una familia que no había pedido ayuda por un tiempo. Betty (no es su nombre) no había pedido ayuda, pero quería que los hombres de San Vicente de Paulo la visitaran. Cuando entramos a su casa, ella dijo: “Quería darles las buenas noticias. Vamos a ser dueños de nuestra propia casa”. Betty vivía con su esposo y ocho de sus nueve hijos. Su esposo quedó discapacitado por un accidente en la cervecería. Un hijo regresó de la guerra como parapléjico. La familia era muy pobre y solo soñaba de tener su propia casa. A través de un nuevo programa bajo del Presidente Johnson, iba a tener su propia casa.
Ella no quería ayuda. Quería decirnos lo bueno que es Dios. Le preguntamos sobre su fe en Dios. Dijo que todas las mañanas le pide a Dios que bendiga y proteja a su familia, y todas las noches le reza a Dios, agradeciéndole por las bendiciones del día. Durante todo el día atiende a dos hombres parapléjicos y siete niños de entre diez y veinte años. Ella aborda todas sus responsabilidades con recursos limitados, pero con gozo y confianza en que Dios proporcionará lo que se necesita. Como ella dijo, “Dios siempre lo hace”.
Cuando volvimos a encontrarnos con el hermano Mateo y los otros hombres de San Vicente de Paulo, pudimos compartir las “buenas nuevas” de Betty y su familia. Fue una gran alegría trabajar cada semana con los generosos hombres de San Vicente de Paulo. Cada vez que nos reuníamos, oramos por los a quienes visitamos y por los cuya generosidad hizo posible que fuéramos evangelizados por los pobres. Ninguno de nosotros podría olvidar a Betty.

Be Generous
As a seminarian, one of my ministry experiences was visiting the poor in Milwaukee with men of the Vincent De Paul Society. Brother Matthew always told us that if we were not sure if a family really needed help or were conning us, “When in doubt, give it out.” Our group never had an overabundance of goods to give away, but we were generous. We could clean out all of our donated goods one week and when we returned the next week, there was more than enough to help those seeking help. Bro. Matthew told us of donors who donated goods and that we needed to be generous with those seeking our assistance. The more generous we were with the poor, the more resources that came in the following week.
Those days were blessed when we went to see a family that had not asked for assistance for a while. Betty had not asked for help but wanted the Vincent de Paul men to visit her. As we entered her home, she said, “I wanted to give you the good news. We are going to own our own home.” Betty (not her name) lived with her husband and eight of their nine children. Her husband became disabled in an accident at a brewery. One son returned from the war as a paraplegic. The family was very poor and only dreamed of having their own home. Through a new program under President Johnson, she was going to have her own home.
She did not want assistance. She wanted to tell us how good God is. We asked her about her faith in God. She said that every morning she asks God to bless and protect her family, and every night she prays to God, thanking him for the blessings of the day. All during the day, she cares for two paraplegic men and seven children between ten and twenty years old. She addresses all of her responsibilities with limited resources, but with joy and confidence that God will provide what is needed. As she said, “God always does.”
When we went back to meet with Brother Matthew and the other men of St. Vincent de Paul, we were able to share the “good news” of Betty and her family. It was a great joy working each week with the generous men of St. Vincent de Paul. Each time we met, we prayed for those whom we visited and for those whose generosity made it possible for us to be evangelized by the poor. None of us could ever forget Betty.

Oh Jesús, tú nos llamas: “Síganme”. Bendice, Señor, a todos los que acogen tu llamado. Puede que el camino no sea fácil, pero tenemos la confianza de que todo es posible si caminamos contigo. Que este viaje nos abra los ojos a las maravillas de tu amor por nosotros. Oramos por toda tu gente, por todos los creyentes e incrédulos, por los líderes y seguidores. Oramos por la sanación, el perdón, la compasión, la justicia y la paz. Oramos para que, al seguirte, nosotros también podamos ser pescadores de hombres. Bendícenos en nuestro viaje.
O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
