Que sea noble
“Noble” significa ser amable, cortés, honorable, respetuoso. Hace unos meses, escribí sobre Gildo, un hombre que sirvió como modelo para los jóvenes de la comunidad de Casa San Alfonso. Era el hombre que se relacionaba con los jóvenes de una manera que los sacerdotes no podían. Podía contar el chiste colorado y, sin embargo, mostrar gran respeto por las mujeres. Era el caballero, un hombre honorable y humilde. Que seamos nobles en nuestras acciones.
En dos semanas celebraremos la fiesta de San Martín de Tours, conocido como San Martín Caballero. Un caballero es galante, generoso y respetuoso. San Martín era soldado romano que se mostraba en su bondad, agachándose para ayudar a un pobre mendigo. Corta su capa por la mitad para dársela a un mendigo helado de frío. Es celebrado por los pobres, y especialmente por los indígenas Trique de Oaxaca.
Los Trique son una comunidad indígena del estado de Oaxaca. Son menos de 30,000 personas, con alrededor de 5,000 en los Estados Unidos. Comenzaron a celebrar un festival de Trique en Madera, CA en 2008. El párroco en Madera me dijo que el primer año, unas cuarenta personas vinieron a la Misa. El segundo y tercer año asistieron alrededor de sesenta. Me pidió que celebrara la misa en 2011. Fui a la finca donde se realizaría el festival, esperando como máximo 100 personas. Se reunieron 800. Hubo un buen coro, bailarines y un hermoso altar preparado para la Misa. El día cayó en la propia fiesta de San Martín Caballero, y se corrió la voz a todos los Trique de la región.
Les pregunté a algunos de los hombres por qué San Martín era venerado por la comunidad Trique. San Martín era el patrón de la iglesia más prominente de su parte de Oaxaca. Un hombre dijo que sabía poco sobre San Martín, pero al ver la mano del santo soldado que se agachaba para ayudar al pobre, representaba la mano de Dios que se extendía hacia él. Me muestra que Dios me respeta en mi pobreza y necesidad.
Después de esa misa, le prometí a la comunidad que diría misa por ellos el año siguiente. Los hombres me pidieron que asistiera a sus reuniones de planificación para el festival del próximo año. Asistí a algunas de las reuniones de planificación y me di cuenta de la importancia que la comunidad le da a ser noble, cortés, respetuoso y fiel. Durante el año, se desarrolló mi relación con la comunidad Trique. El hijo de uno de los líderes murió repentinamente y celebré con ellos el funeral y la novena por los muertos. También preparé y celebré el matrimonio de una de las parejas. No hablaba el dialecto, pero descubrí el significado de ser noble en mi trabajo con los Trique.

Be Noble
“Noble” means to be gracious, courteous, honorable, respectful. A few months ago, I wrote about Gildo, a man served as a role model for the young people in our youth community, Casa San Alfonso. He was the man who related with young men in ways that priests could not. He could tell the off-color joke, yet show great respect for women. He was the caballero, the gentlemen, a humble faithful man. Let us be noble in our actions.
In a couple weeks, we will celebrate the feast of St. Martin of Tours, known in Spanish as San Martin Caballero. A caballero is galant, generous and respectful. San Martin was the Roman cavalryman shown on his horse, reaching down to aid a poor beggar. He cuts his cape in half to give it to a beggar freezing from the cold. He is celebrated by the poor, and especially the indigenous people of Oaxaca.
The Trique are an indigenous community from the state of Oaxaca, Mexico. They number less than 30,000 people, with about 5,000 in the United States. They began celebrating a Trique festival in Madera, CA in 2008. The pastor in Madera told me that the first year, about forty people came for the Mass. The second and third years there were about sixty attending. He asked me to celebrate the Mass in 2011. I went to the farm where the festival would take place, expecting at most 100 people. There were 800 people gathered. There was at a well-organized choir, dancers and a beautiful altar prepared for the Mass. The day fell on the actual feast day of San Martin Caballero, and word went out to all the Trique in the region.
I asked some of the men why San Martin was revered by the Trique community. San Martin was the patron of the most prominent church in their part of Oaxaca. One man said that he knew little about San Martin, but in seeing the hand of the soldier saint reaching down to help the poor man represented the hand of God reaching down to him. He shows me that God respects me in my poverty and need.
After that Mass, I promised the community that I would say Mass for them the following year. The Trique men asked me to attend their planning meetings for the next year’s festival. I attended a few of the planning meetings and came to an awareness of the importance the community place on being noble, courteous, respectful and faithful. During the year, my relationship with the Trique community developed. The son of one of the Trique leaders died suddenly and I celebrated with them the funeral and the novena for the dead. I also prepared and celebrated the marriage of one of the couples. I did not speak the dialect, but I discovered the meaning of noble working with the Trique.

May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
