Ser audaces y creativos
EG. 33: La pastoral en clave de misión pretende abandonar el cómodo criterio pastoral del «siempre se ha hecho así». Invito a todos a ser audaces y creativos en esta tarea de repensar los objetivos, las estructuras, el estilo y los métodos evangelizadores de las propias comunidades. Una postulación de los fines sin una adecuada búsqueda comunitaria de los medios para alcanzarlos está condenada a convertirse en mera fantasía. Exhorto a todos a aplicar con generosidad y valentía las orientaciones de este documento, sin prohibiciones ni miedos. Lo importante es no caminar solos, contar siempre con los hermanos y especialmente con la guía de los obispos, en un sabio y realista discernimiento pastoral.
Podemos realizar la Alegría del Evangelio. Requiere asumir una nueva actitud. Necesitamos abandonar la actitud que dice: “Siempre se ha hecho así”. Deseo que todos estén emocionados por la invitación del Papa Francisco a todos “a ser audaces y creativos en esta tarea de repensar los objetivos, las estructuras, el estilo y los métodos evangelizadores de las propias comunidades”. Demasiadas parroquias caen en solo un estilo de ofrecer evangelización. Al hacerlo, hay personas para quienes un programa no sirve bien. Los llamados a esta diversidad de métodos no son exclusivos del Papa Francisco. El Papa Pablo VI reconoció la necesidad de que hay mejor reconocimiento del testimonio de los fieles por su ejemplo que el desarrollo de métodos de catequesis. El Papa Juan Pablo II, en un discurso a los obispos de América Latina en 1983, llamó a una nueva evangelización, “nueva en su ardor, métodos y expresión”.
El Papa Francisco no solo llama a los fieles a “ser audaces y creativos” en la tarea de la evangelización, sino a reconocer que somos capaces de audacia y creatividad. Está al alcance de los fieles. Con Dios nada es imposible. Nos llama a ser generosos y valientes, porque no caminamos solos en esta obra de Dios. Necesitamos confiar los unos en los otros.
Si bien apreciamos el llamado para que seamos audaces y creativos, después de ocho años desde la publicación de La Alegría del Evangelio, es una aspiración, una esperanza para la Iglesia, pero no una realidad. Mucha gente tiene miedo de dejar a lado el “Siempre se ha hecho así”. En el evangelio del domingo, Jesús nos dio un nuevo mandamiento: “Que se amen los unos a los otros, como yo los he amado”. En este mandamiento nuevo, el único dado por Jesús, nuestra fe no es juzgada por nuestra debilidad y nuestros pecados sino por la incapacidad para amar con generosidad.
Que Dios nos bendiga con el valor de confiar en Dios que nos ama tanto que envió a su hijo, no para condenar al mundo, sino para que seamos salvos. (cf. Jn 3,17) Si somos verdaderamente valientes en la fe, caminaremos en el amor de Dios, no en el miedo. “Que sean audaces y creativos”.

Be Bold and Creative
EG. 33: Pastoral ministry in a missionary key seeks to abandon the complacent attitude that says: “We have always done it this way”. I invite everyone to be bold and creative in this task of rethinking the goals, structures, style and methods of evangelization in their respective communities. A proposal of goals without an adequate communal search for the means of achieving them will inevitably prove illusory. I encourage everyone to apply the guidelines found in this document generously and courageously, without inhibitions or fear. The important thing is to not walk alone, but to rely on each other as brothers and sisters, and especially under the leadership of the bishops, in a wise and realistic pastoral discernment.
We can realize the Joy of the Gospel. It requires taking on a new attitude. We need to abandon the attitude that says, “We have always done it this way.” I wish that everyone would be excited by Pope Francis’ invitation to everyone “to be bold and creative in this task of rethinking the goals, structures, style and methods of evangelization in their respective communities.” Too many parishes fall into one pattern or style of offering evangelization. In doing so, there are people for whom one program may not serve well. Calls for this diversity of methods is not unique to Pope Francis. Pope Paul VI recognized the need for more recognition of the testimony of the faithful by their example than developing methods of catechesis. Pope John Paul II, in an address to the Bishops of Latin American in 1983, called for a new evangelization, “new in its ardor, methods and expression.”
Pope Francis not only calls on the faithful to “be bold and creative” in the task of evangelization, but to recognize that we are capable of boldness and creativity. It is within the reach of the faithful. Nothing is impossible with God. He calls on us to be generous and courageous, because we do not walk alone in this work of God. We need to rely on each other.
While appreciating the call for us to be bold and creative, after eight years since publishing The Joy of the Gospel, it is an aspiration, a hope for the Church, but not a reality. So many people are afraid to let go of “we have always done it this way.” In the gospel on Sunday, Jesus gave us a new commandment, “to love one another as I have loved you.” In this new commandment, the only one given by Jesus, our faith is not judged by our weakness and sinfulness, but by our inability to love generously.
May God bless us with the courage to trust in God who so loves us that he sent his son, not to condemn the world, but that we may be saved. (cf. Jn. 3:17) If we are truly bold in the faith, we will walk in love of God, not in fear. “Be bold and creative”.
Oh Jesús, tú nos llamas: “Síganme”. Bendice, Señor, a todos los que acogen tu llamado. Puede que el camino no sea fácil, pero tenemos la confianza de que todo es posible si caminamos contigo. Que este viaje nos abra los ojos a las maravillas de tu amor por nosotros. Oramos por toda tu gente, por todos los creyentes e incrédulos, por los líderes y seguidores. Oramos por la sanación, el perdón, la compasión, la justicia y la paz. Oramos para que, al seguirte, nosotros también podamos ser pescadores de hombres. Bendícenos en nuestro viaje.
O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
