Sea audaz y creativo

El Papa Francisco llamó a los líderes de la Iglesia a ser audaces y creativos al responder al cuidado pastoral de los feligreses. Nos dijo que dejáramos de lado la actitud, «siempre se ha hecho así». Quiero reformular sus palabras en nuestra respuesta a la migración global. Digo esto no solo a quienes se sienten incómodos con los migrantes y refugiados en nuestras fronteras, sino también a quienes se dedican a la ayuda humanitaria para los refugiados. “Invito a todos a ser audaces y creativos en esta tarea de repensar los objetivos, las estructuras, el estilo y los métodos” de responder a la migración de personas.
Durante los últimos cuatro meses, he estado involucrado en un estudio de la migración en México. Un gran parte del tiempo se ha dedicado a visitar albergues y centros de servicio para migrantes. Al contrario de lo que presentan los líderes políticos y los medios sensacionalistas, la mayoría de estos proyectos son A-políticos. Ofrecen alimentación, albergue, servicios médicos, psicológicos, legales y sociales para los migrantes. Visité un grupo que se identificó como un “proyecto de derechos de inmigrantes y refugiados”. La identificación como proyecto me pareció apropiada. Su proyecto incluye objetivos, estructuras, estilos y métodos para responder a las personas de la migración.
Ayer hablé de las organizaciones de caridades administradas por agencias católicas. Tienen proyectos de ayuda a determinados colectivos de personas, personas sin hogar, discapacitados, alimentos y refugio, etc. La admirable labor de los defensores de los derechos humanos, cuidadores de tantas personas al margen de la sociedad, están respondiendo a las necesidades de las personas. Sin embargo, el Papa Francisco llama a los líderes de la Iglesia a ser audaces y creativos. El Papa Benedicto XVI llamó a los líderes mundiales a adoptar “una fuerte y clarividente política de cooperación internacional para afrontar” la migración global, “un fenómeno social que marca época.” (Caritas in veritate, 62).
La audacia que piden ambos Papas requiere coraje de los líderes políticos y compromiso a Cristo de los líderes religiosos.

“I invite everyone to be bold and creative in this task of rethinking the goals, structures, style and methods of evangelization in their respective communities.” (EG 33)
Pope Francis urged Church leaders to be bold and creative in responding to the pastoral care of people. He told us to put aside the attitude, “We have always done it this way”. I want to rephrase his words in our response to global migration. I say this not only to those who are uncomfortable with migrants and refugees at our borders, but also for those who are engaged in humanitarian relief for refugees. “I invite everyone to be bold and creative in this task of rethinking the goals, structures, style and methods” of responding to the migration of people.
Over the past four months, I have been engaged in a study of migration in Mexico. Much of the time has been dedicated to visiting migrant shelters and service centers. Contrary to what political leaders and sensationalist media present, most of these projects are A-political. They offer food, shelter, medical, psychological, legal and social services for migrants. I visited a group who identified themselves as an “immigrant and refugee rights project”. The identification as a project struck me as appropriate. Their project includes goals, structures, styles and methods to respond to people of migration.
Yesterday, I spoke about charities run by Catholic agencies. They have projects to help certain groups of people, the homeless, those with disabilities, food and shelter relief, etc. The admirable work of advocates for human rights, caregivers for so many people on the fringes of society are responding to the needs of people. Yet, what is Pope Francis call leaders in the Church to do is to be bold and creative. Pope Benedict XVI called world leaders to adopt “bold, forward looking policies of international cooperation” to handle global migration, “a social phenomenon of epoch-making proportions.” (Caritas in veritate, 62).
The boldness that both Popes call for takes courage from political leaders and commitment to Christ from religious leaders.

O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
