Carta a los amigos del Padre Migrante
Queridos amigos,

A Letter to friends of Padre Migrante
Dear Friends,
The text from my Provincial, “Could you go to Mexico for four months?” came on St. Patrick’s Day. Our Redemptorist charism is to serve the “most abandoned.” Pope Francis calls people in need, those on the periphery. Of those on the periphery of society and the Church, migration is a priority that Redemptorist serve in many parts of the world. I will be on a committee to consider how Redemptorists can serve migrants from many nations living in Mexico today. Before making decisions for actively engaging in migration ministry, we need to Observe, Judge and Act for the good of migrants and our faith community.
The Padre Migrante blogs will be an important part of my commitment in Mexico. On the blogs, I will not talk about assessments, reports and recommendations to our confreres. What I hope to offer though are glimpses of the realities of migration that I encounter during the time of our study. Statistics, official reports, legal and political ramifications is for others to study. The reason why I am considered for this study is my experience of walking with migrants and immigrants for many years on both sides of the Mexican/U.S border. My experience is subjective, experiential and emotional.
Walk with me and fall in love with the people whom Jesus loved so much. He told us that he could be discovered among the hungry, the thirsty, the naked, the stranger, the prisoner, the sick and the dying. I confess that walking with the poor has not been a burden or a sad experience. Oh, there have been some difficult struggles, but there is something life giving in walking with the poor. I believe that joy of ministry with the poor is the sight of Jesus amongst them.
I will try to continue placing posts daily. There may be some days when I may lack access to post a daily blog. On those days, pray for all people on the periphery. May God help me earn the right to be called, Padre Migrante.
Fr. Mike McAndrew, C.Ss.R.
