¿Cuándo decidió ser sacerdote?
No sé. Crecí en una familia católica, con una tía que era hermana de Mercy. Unos jóvenes de nuestra parroquia ingresaron al seminario Redentorista todos los años. La clase anterior a la mía envió a nueve niños al seminario. Siete entraron de mi clase de octavo grado. Fuimos al seminario para ver si verdaderamente podíamos o queríamos ser sacerdotes. La decisión de entrar en un seminario menor no fue una decisión de hacerse sacerdote, sino de comprobarlo.
Después de cada año, decidí volver al año siguiente. Hubo momentos en los que tuve que tomar decisiones acerca de seguir adelante para convertirme en sacerdote. Entrar en el noviciado fue ciertamente más que años anteriores de volver a la escuela. Al final de ese año haríamos los votos de vida religiosa. En el momento en que hicimos los votos temporales, creí que si bien los votos eran temporales, pero los hice considerándolos permanentes.
Después de los votos temporales, probablemente pensé más en “debería quedarme o debería irme” más que nunca. Algunos de mis mejores amigos decidieron que no era para ellos. A veces no sabía por qué me quedaba, pero nunca decidí que tenía que irme. Hoy todavía no puedo decir “cuando decidí ser sacerdote”. Sin embargo, tomé la decisión de ser sacerdote. Hubo momentos durante mi sacerdocio en los que cuestioné la decisión y me pregunté cómo sería mi vida si dejaba el sacerdocio, pero me quedé. Crecí en mi sacerdocio y cuando comenzamos nuestra comunidad de jóvenes en Casa San Alfonso, mi sacerdocio estaba asegurado.
Cuando celebramos nuestro trigésimo aniversario de Casa San Alfonso, dije que era el mejor día de mi vida como sacerdote. Alguien preguntó: “¿Incluso más que el día de tu ordenación?” Ciertamente. En la ordenación esperaba ser un buen sacerdote. En la reunión vi en la gratitud de tantos amigos la alegría de ser sacerdote y Redentorista.

When did you decide to be a priest?
I don´t know. I grew up in Catholic family, with an aunt who was a Mercy sister. Young men from our parish entered the Redemptorist seminary every year from our grade school. The class ahead of mine sent nine boys to the seminary. Seven entered from my eighth-grade class. We went to the seminary to see if we really could or really wanted to become priests. The decision to enter a minor seminary was not a decision to become a priest, but to check it out.
After each year, I decided to come back the next year. There were moments when I had to make decisions about moving forward to becoming a priest. Entering the novitiate was certainly than previous years of going back for school. At the end of that year, we would take vows of religious life. At the time that we made temporary vows, I believed that while the vows were temporary, I took the vows, considering them to be permanent.
After temporary vows, I probably thought more about “should I stay or should I go” more than ever before. Some of my best friends decided that it was not for them. At times I did not know why I stayed, but I never decided that I needed to leave. Today, I still cannot say “when I decided to be a priest.” Yet, I did make the decision to be a priest. There were times during my priesthood when I questioned the decision and wondered what life would be like if I left the priesthood, but I stayed. I grew into my priesthood and by the time that we began our youth community at Casa San Alfonso, my priesthood was secure.
When we celebrated our thirtieth anniversary of Casa San Alfonso, I said that it was the best day of my life as a priest. Someone asked, “Even more than your ordination day?” Certainly. At the ordination I hoped to be a good priest. At the reunion, I saw in the gratitude of so many friends the joy of being a priest and a Redemptorist.

O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
