No me siento viejo
Alguien me preguntó: “Pensé que te ibas a retirar”. Le conté acerca de las cosas buenas que estaban pasando en mi vida, especialmente en el ministerio. Él dijo: “Ciertamente tienes la energía”. Mientras hablaba, me hizo pensar en las cosas que me emocionan de la vida. Le dije que, en los últimos dos años, muchos aspectos del ministerio se desaceleraron. Después de un cierre dramático en 2020, cuando las iglesias cerraron y experimentamos con celebraciones virtuales de Misa y reunir con gente en línea, había algunas cosas que podíamos hacer, pero en realidad, hubo mucho tiempo de inactividad. Fue un tiempo de mucha introspección y falta de contacto pastoral en el ministerio.
Ha habido un aumento en la actividad ministerial, y con muchas personas vacunándose, comenzamos a tener la oportunidad de renovar los ministerios. Ciertamente, ha habido lecciones aprendidas durante la pandemia, pero quería más. Después de sustituir por cuatro sacerdotes por períodos de dos a tres meses durante el año pasado, comencé una asignación de tres meses en Ballinger, Texas. Presenté la idea de pasar cuatro semanas en Cuaresma predicando una “Misión para un Mundo Herido”. Involucró eventos predicados cuatro noches a la semana. También había cinco misas los sábados y domingos. Después de agregar una tarde para reunirme con jóvenes de la parroquia cada semana, tuve un horario que ocupó seis tardes cada semana durante cuatro semanas. Al principio, me preocupaba que pudiera estar demasiado ocupado.
Luego, el segundo miércoles por la noche tuvimos una gran participación en la noche de misión que incluyó un servicio de reconciliación. Vinieron ocho confesores y estábamos ocupados. Fue agradable escuchar los comentarios de los feligreses sobre el servicio, pero aprecié más los comentarios de los otros sacerdotes. Sencillamente sentí que nuestra iglesia estaba viva de nuevo. Estamos surgiendo de las sombras de COVID y las dificultades de este tiempo. Cuando se le preguntó, “Pensé que te ibas a retirar”. Dije: “No me siento viejo. Estoy vivo de nuevo”.
Cada día estamos más cerca de la Semana Santa. Que nuestro viaje De Cuaresma continua bien y nos prepare para una Pascua feliz.

I don’t feel old
Someone asked, “I thought you were going to retire.” I told him about good things going on in my life, especially in ministry. He said, “You certainly have the energy.” As he spoke, it made me think about the things that excite me about life. I told him that the past two years, many aspects of ministry slowed down. After a dramatic shut down in 2020, when churches closed and we experimented with virtual celebrations of Mass and meeting people online, there were some things that we could do, but in reality, there was a lot of down time. It was a time of much introspection and lack of pastoral contact in ministry.
There has been an increase in ministerial activity, and with many people getting vaccinated, we began to have the opportunity to renew ministries. Certainly, there have been lessons learned through the pandemic, but I wanted more. After taking the place of four priests for periods of two to three months over the past year, I began a three-month assignment in Ballinger, Texas. I introduced the idea of spending four weeks in Lent preaching a “Mission for a Wounded World.” It involved preached events four evenings a week along with the regular five Masses on Saturday and Sunday. After adding an evening to meet youth of the parish each week, I had schedule that occupied six evenings each week for four weeks. At first, I worried that it may be too busy.
Then, on the second Wednesday evening we had a great turnout for a mission evening that included a reconciliation service. Eight confessors came and we were busy. It was nice hearing comments about the service from the parishioners, but I appreciated most the comments from the other priests. It simply felt that our church was alive again. We are rising from the shadows of COVID and the difficulties of our time. When asked, “I thought you were going to retire.” I said, “Now, I don’t feel old. I’m alive again.”
We are getting closer to Easter each day. May our continued Lenten journey prepare us for a joyful Easter.

Oh Jesús, tú nos llamas: “Síganme”. Bendice, Señor, a todos los que acogen tu llamado. Puede que el camino no sea fácil, pero tenemos la confianza de que todo es posible si caminamos contigo. Que este viaje nos abra los ojos a las maravillas de tu amor por nosotros. Oramos por toda tu gente, por todos los creyentes e incrédulos, por los líderes y seguidores. Oramos por la sanación, el perdón, la compasión, la justicia y la paz. Oramos para que, al seguirte, nosotros también podamos ser pescadores de hombres. Bendícenos en nuestro viaje.
O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
