Hubo muchos comentarios en mi publicación del sábado acerca de que este era mi quincuagésimo año de sacerdocio. Los comentarios vinieron de muchas personas que han sido parte de mi aventura sacerdotal. A mis compañeros de clase desde la escuela primaria hasta mis días en el seminario, y a aquellos con quienes he trabajado desde Oregón hasta Virginia y desde Minnesota hasta Mississippi, y a aquellos de las comunidades de migrantes e inmigrantes que me dieron la bienvenida a sus vidas, gracias.
Durante el verano pasado, tuve una tarea muy interesante para estudiar las situaciones de los migrantes a lo largo de la frontera entre México y Estados Unidos. Tuve algún tiempo después para considerar lo que podría hacer en mis “últimos años de ministerio”. Había dos posibilidades obvias; una en nuestra iniciativa con migrantes a lo largo de la frontera y otra para ayudar en una diócesis que busca ayuda en el ministerio hispano. Sin embargo, en noviembre escribí la siguiente: “Tengo 75 años. Mi experiencia en el trabajo con migrantes e inmigrantes es única entre mis hermanos. Mi mayor alegría en historia fue mi trabajo con los campesinos migrantes. Desearía usar mi experiencia para ayudar a otros a trabajar con mi gente”.
En diciembre se me abrió un camino para conseguir mi deseo. Algunas personas piensan que estoy loco por emocionarme con un nuevo trabajo. Lo que me emociona de trabajar con la Red Católica de Trabajadores Agrícolas Migrantes es que renovaré el contacto con el ministerio que más profundamente impactó mi vida. He disfrutado toda mi vida como misionero, pero fue la comunidad de campesinos, la que me dio un hogar. Era un hogar con personas cuyo hogar no es un lugar, sino una comunidad de personas en movilidad.
Tendré la oportunidad de enseñar compartiendo mis experiencias de vida con los migrantes. Habrá oportunidades para enseñar a los líderes religiosos, pero sobre todo habrá la oportunidad de volver a caminar con el campesino. Cuando termina una cosecha, los trabajadores pasan a la próxima cosecha. Dicen “Adiós” a sus amigos, a quienes pueden ver el próximo año o en otra cosecha. El ciclo de la vida continúa. Será bueno renovar amistades y comenzar nuevas relaciones con campesinos en todo los Estados Unidos.
Gracias a todos los que respondieron a mis blogs recientes. Ayer escribí sobre una mujer joven que seguía su sueño de ser piloto. Ella realizó su sueño, y ahora estoy siguiendo lo mío. Es una gran bendición, cuando Dios abre un camino para seguir.

There were many comments on my post on Saturday about this being my fiftieth year of priesthood. The comments came from many people who have been part of my priestly adventure. To classmates from grade school to my days in the seminary, and to those with whom I have worked from Oregon to Virginia and from Minnesota to Mississippi, and to those from migrant and immigrant communities that welcomed me into your lives, thank you.
Over the past summer, I had a very interesting assignment to study the situations of migrants along the Mexico / United States border. I had some time afterwards to consider what I could do in my “senior years of ministry.” There were two obvious possibilities; one in our developing initiative with migrants along the border and another to help in a diocese looking for help in Hispanic ministry. Yet, in November, I wrote the following reflection: “I am 75. My experience in working with migrants and immigrants is unique among my confreres. My greatest joy in ministry was my work with migrant farm workers. I wish that I could use my experience to help others engage in work with my people.”
In December, a path opened for me to get my wish. Some people think I am crazy getting excited about a new job. What excites me about working with Catholic Migrant Farmworker Network is that I will renew contact with the ministry that most deeply impacted my life as a Redemptorist. I have enjoyed all my life as a missionary, but it was the farmworker community that gave me a home. It was a home with people whose home is not a place, but a community of people of mobility.
I will have the opportunity to teach by sharing my life experiences with migrants. There will be opportunities to teach religious leaders, but most of all there will be the opportunity to walk again with the campesino. When a harvest ends, workers move on to the next harvest. They bid “Adios” to their friends, whom they may see the next year or at another harvest. The cycle of life continues. It will be good to renew friendships, and to begin new relationships with farm workers across the United States.

Oh Jesús, tú nos llamas: “Síganme”. Bendice, Señor, a todos los que acogen tu llamado. Puede que el camino no sea fácil, pero tenemos la confianza de que todo es posible si caminamos contigo. Que este viaje nos abra los ojos a las maravillas de tu amor por nosotros. Oramos por toda tu gente, por todos los creyentes e incrédulos, por los líderes y seguidores. Oramos por la sanación, el perdón, la compasión, la justicia y la paz. Oramos para que, al seguirte, nosotros también podamos ser pescadores de hombres. Bendícenos en nuestro viaje.
O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
