¿Qué señales de vida y esperanza podemos ver?
El Papa Francisco dijo: ¿Qué señales de vida y esperanza podemos ver para ayudarnos a seguir adelante y tratar de hacer de nuestro mundo un lugar mejor?
Mi señal de vida y esperanza llegó este verano en el lugar más inesperado. Ya habíamos visitado tres diócesis en la frontera México/Estados Unidos: Tijuana, Mexicali y Nogales. Los migrantes a quienes visitamos procedían de muchas naciones de América Central y del Sur. También incluyeron personas de África, Asia, el Caribe y Europa. Los migrantes llegaron a esas comunidades fronterizas desde muchas direcciones. Hablaron de su motivación para ver el asilo y algunos contaron historias de su viaje por México para llegar a la frontera. Algunos pasaron muchos días, incluso meses, esperando citas para entrevistas en los consulados de los Estados Unidos. Mientras la gente hablaba con nosotros, muchos se mostraban cautelosos con lo que decían.
Fuimos a las Ciudades México y San Luis Potosí. Visitamos a personas con experiencia en el trabajo de defensa de los migrantes y algunos centros de migrantes. Fue en San Luis Potosí cuando visitamos a cinco jóvenes, de 18 a 23 años, de las cuatro naciones de Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras y Nicaragua. No se conocían antes de encontrarse en la frontera sur de México. Después de ingresar a México, caminaron durante ocho días antes de abordar un tren de carga, La Bestia. A veces tenían que bajarse del tren y caminar durante más tiempo antes de abordar otro tren. El día veintinueve llegaron a San Luis Potosí.
Los vimos después de que se ducharon, se afeitaron y recibieron ropa nueva. Hablaron sobre cómo se hicieron amigos en el viaje. Se cuidaban unos a otros, protegiéndose de las pandillas y los delincuentes que se aprovechaban de ellos. En el camino, reconocieron que varias mujeres y niños necesitaban protectores. Una mujer los elogió, diciendo que tal vez no estaría viva si no fuera por ellos. El vínculo de cinco jóvenes de cuatro naciones muestra lo que es posible cuando las personas se ven como hermanos en lugar de extraños.
Trabajo con personas de muchas naciones latinoamericanas y, a menudo, puede haber tensión entre grupos de diferentes naciones. He contado la historia del encuentro con esos cinco hombres. No necesito llamar la atención sobre los problemas de algunas comunidades que tienen hostilidad en las comunidades de migrantes aquí. La gente siempre responde agradeciéndome por recordarles sus experiencias compartidas con otros migrantes, y quieren más paz entre los grupos.
Esos cinco jóvenes son mis signos de vida y esperanza.

Pope Francis asks: “What signs of life and hope can we see, to help us move forward and try to make our world a better place?”
My sign of life and hope came this summer in a most unexpected place. We had already visited three dioceses on the Mexico / United States border: Tijuana, Mexicali and Nogales. The migrants whom we visited came from many nations of Central and South America. They also included people from Africa, Asia, the Caribbean and Europe. The migrants arrived at those border communities from many directions. They spoke of their motivation to see asylum and a few told stories of their traveling through Mexico to get to the border. Some spent many days, even months waiting for interviews appointments at the U. S. consulates. While people spoke with us, many were guarded at what they said.
We went to Mexico City and San Luis Potosi. We visited people experienced in working in advocacy for migrants and a few migrant centers. It was in San Luis Potosi when we visited with five young men, ages 18-23, from the four nations of Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. They did not know each other before they met on the southern border of Mexico. After entering Mexico, they walked for eight days before boarding a freight train, La Bestia (the Beast). At times they had to get off the train and walk for more of the journey before boarding another train. On the twenty-ninth day, they arrived in San Luis Potosi.
We saw them after they had showered, shaved and received some new clothes. They talked about how they became friends on the journey. They watched out for each other, protecting themselves from the gangs and criminals taking advantage of them. On the journey, they recognized that several women and children needed protectors. A woman praised them, saying she may not be alive if not for them. The bond of five young men from four nations shows what is possible when people see each other as brothers rather than strangers.
I work with people from many Latin American nations, and often there can be tension between groups, different nations. I have told the story of meeting those five men. I do not need to call attention to the problems of some communities having hostility in the migrant communities between national groups. People always respond by thanking me for reminding them of their shared experiences with other migrants, and they want more peace between groups.
Those five young men are my signs of life and hope.

Oh Jesús, tú nos llamas: “Síganme”. Bendice, Señor, a todos los que acogen tu llamado. Puede que el camino no sea fácil, pero tenemos la confianza de que todo es posible si caminamos contigo. O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
