What new paths should we follow?
Pope Francis’ calls on us to take new paths. Note that it is not a call to one path. There is not simply one path to peace. All of us need to be creative, flexible and timely in what we do. Taking a new path does not mean that we fail to remember our history and traditions, but we need to take the new paths with courage, trust and patience. Jesus told us that he is the Way. As we consider so many who followed his way, those whom we call saints, whether they have been declared saints by the Church or those personal heroes of our lives who showed us a way of faith and commitment to lives of integrity, love and hope.
It is good for us to remember the people who have inspired us, the traditions that motivated us, the sacrifices that were made by people who taught us values, self-worth, responsibility and hope. I am grateful to those who taught me as I grew up. Some taught in classrooms, pulpits, and in the home. Some taught as coaches, teammates and family. But the lessons of life that most impacted me was the witness given by so many who overcame obstacles in life to make the world, the community, the school, the church and the family better.
Today, let us consider what paths each of us should follow. Together we can move beyond the COVID pandemic. Let our lives be a witness to peace.
