Secuela de “La Fe del Migrante”
“Necesitas conocer las costumbres, la fe y las luchas de mi pueblo. Si no vas a caminar con mi pueblo, no te molestes en aprender español”. Estas palabras del P. Enrique López, C.Ss.R., me desafiaron en un momento de mi vida en el que necesitaba escuchar. En 1991 comencé a caminar con migrantes y inmigrantes hispanos. Después de aprender las costumbres, la fe y las luchas de los católicos hispanos, escribí “La Fe del Migrante” en 2013 para honrar la fe que experimenté en mi caminar con el pueblo del Padre López. Después de nueve años, es tiempo de considerar una secuela de “La Fe del Migrante”.
Todavía estoy orgulloso de ese libro, pero mucho ha cambiado en el ministerio de migrantes e inmigrantes desde que comencé a escribir el libro. Después de comenzar el libro, el Papa Benedicto XVI anunció su jubiliación. El libro se imprimió tres semanas después de que el Papa Francisco parecía en el balcón del Vaticano. Escribí en La Fe del Migrante, que “Mi interés es el cuidado pastoral, llevar la gracia de Cristo al trabajador migrante a través del ministerio de la Iglesia Católica.” Siete meses después, en “La alegría del Evangelio”, el Papa Francisco escribió: “Quiero expresar con dolor que la peor discriminación que sufren los pobres es la falta de atención espiritual”. La clave de atención espiritual es caminar con la gente. No puedo prometer la finalización de un nuevo libro, pero a medida que continúe escribiendo estos blogs, probaré material para un nuevo libro. Agradezco las breves respuestas en Facebook a mis artículos, pero también agradecería escuchar a personas en el ministerio que me cuenten sus historias. Dígame cuando un tema le parezca que necesita más comentarios. Sus reflexiones son bienvenidas mientras empiezo a juntar materiales. Estoy considerando como título para un nuevo libro, “Camina con mi pueblo”. Como he dicho muchas veces, los más grandes maestros son los pobres que nos muestran la fe en medio de los momentos más difíciles.

Sequel to “Migrant Faith”
“You need to know the customs, the faith, and the struggles of my people. If you will not walk with my people, don’t bother to learn Spanish.” These words from Fr. Enrique Lopez, C.Ss.R. challenged me at a time in my life when I needed to listen. In 1991, I began to walk with Hispanic migrants and immigrants. After learning the customs, the faith and the struggles of Hispanic Catholics, I wrote “Migrant Faith” in 2013 to honor the faith that I experienced on my walk with Fr. Lopez’ people. After nine years, it is time to consider writing a sequel to “Migrant Faith”.
I am still proud of that book, but so much has changed in migrant and immigrant ministry since I began writing the book. After beginning the book, Pope Benedict XVI announced his retirement. The book went to print three weeks after Pope Francis stepped onto the balcony of the Vatican. I wrote in the first chapter that “My concern is pastoral care, bringing the grace of Christ to the migrant through the ministry of the Catholic Church.” Seven months later, in “The Joy of the Gospel”, Pope Francis wrote, “I want to say, with regret, that the worst discrimination which the poor suffer is the lack of spiritual care.” (EG. 200)
The key to spiritual care is walking with the people. I cannot promise completion of a new book, but as I continue writing these blogs, I will be trying out material for a new book. At the bottom of these blogs, I invite people to write to me directly at my email address. I appreciate the brief responses on Facebook to my articles, but I also would appreciate hearing from people in ministry to tell me their stories. Tell me when a theme strikes you as needing more commentary. Your reflections are welcome as I begin pulling materials together. I am considering as a title for a new book, “Walk with my people.” As I have often said, the greatest teachers are the poor who show us faith in the midst of the most difficult times.

O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
