Comenzando con Abraham
Desde el comienzo de la humanidad, gente ha estado en un camino de fe. Describimos el viaje de muchas maneras. Nuestro viaje comienza con la esperanza de encontrar sentido, alegría, felicidad y paz. Comienza con el reconocimiento de lo bueno que nos rodea, pero también siendo conscientes de los desafíos que enfrentamos. Hay mucho sobre nuestro medio ambiente que es un misterio. Ese misterio que definimos como lo divino, como Dios y nuestra búsqueda de comprensión y vivencia moral es un aprendizaje continuo. Aprender sobre nuestro viaje en la vida puede tomar muchas vueltas, pero confiamos en que es un viaje noble.
La ubicación del desarrollo de la fe judeocristiana se centra en el Medio Oriente, en una parte del mundo donde se cruzaban las rutas comerciales entre Asia, África y Europa. La exposición a personas de diferentes razas, historias, costumbres y expresiones religiosas tuvo una influencia significativa en una región del mundo que se convirtió en el lugar de nacimiento de las religiones judía, cristiana y musulmana.
El fundamento de la fe de Israel comienza con la historia de Abraham. En Deuteronomio, leemos, “mi padre era un arameo errante”. (Dt. 26,5) Se nos dice que el espíritu de Dios lo movió a dejar su tierra natal de Ur de Caldea para buscar la “tierra prometida”. Su viaje tomó años, y la leyenda de sus viajes relatada en las Escrituras, no fue una ruta directa de viaje desde Ur a Israel. Abraham recibió a personas de diferentes religiones con dignidad y respeto al recibir a los visitantes y prepararles comidas para que pasaran la noche con él. En una ocasión tres se quedaron con él y al irse, profetizaron el nacimiento de un hijo para él y Sara en su “vejez”. Abraham también recibió a Melquisedec, el sacerdote, para orar con él. Abraham estaba abierto a aprender sobre el “Dios único” y llegó a ser conocido como nuestro padre en la fe.
Los viajes de Abraham deben haber sido desalentadores. Hubo peligros ya que tuvo que proteger a su esposa en el viaje, y tuvieron que esperar muchos años antes de que Dios les diera un hijo. Sin embargo, la historia de Abraham es una persona de fe, que busca seguir al Dios verdadero. Así es el camino de la fe. Nuestro camino humano hacia Dios tiene momentos de paz, alegría y esperanza.

Beginning with Abraham
From the beginning of humanity, people have been on a journey of faith. We describe the journey in many ways. Our journey begins with hope that we find meaning, joy, happiness and peace. It begins with recognition of the good that is around us, but also being aware of the challenges that we face. There is much about our environment that is a mystery. That mystery we define as the divine, as God and our search for understanding and moral living is a continual learning experience. Learning about our journey in life may take many turns, but we trust that it is a noble journey.
The location of the development of Judeo-Christian faith is centered in the Middle East, in a part of the world where trade routes between Asia, Africa, and Europe crossed. The exposure to people of different race, history, custom, and religious expression had a significant influence on a region of the world that became the birthplace of Judaic, Christian, and Muslim faiths.
The foundation of the faith of Israel begins with the story of Abraham. In Deuteronomy, we read, “my father was a wandering Aramaean.” (Dt. 26,5) We are told that the spirit of God moved him to leave his native land of Ur to seek the “promised land”. His journey took years, and the legend of his travels accounted for in Scripture, it was not a direct route of travel from Ur of Caldea to Israel. Abraham received people of different faiths with dignity and respect as he welcomed visitors and prepared meals for them so that they would spend the evening with him. On one occasion three stayed with him and as they left, they prophesied the birth of a son to him and Sarah in their “old age.” Abraham also welcomed Melchizedec, the priest, to pray with him. Abraham was open to learn about the “One God,” and became known as our father in faith.
The travels of Abraham must have been daunting. There were dangers as he had to protect his wife on the journey, and they had many years of waiting before God gave them a son. Yet, the story of Abraham is a person of faith, seeking to follow the true God. Such is the journey of faith. Our human journey to God has moments of peace, joy and hope.

Oh Jesús, tú nos llamas: “Síganme”. Bendice, Señor, a todos los que acogen tu llamado. Puede que el camino no sea fácil, pero tenemos la confianza de que todo es posible si caminamos contigo. Que este viaje nos abra los ojos a las maravillas de tu amor por nosotros. Oramos por toda tu gente, por todos los creyentes e incrédulos, por los líderes y seguidores. Oramos por la sanación, el perdón, la compasión, la justicia y la paz. Oramos para que, al seguirte, nosotros también podamos ser pescadores de hombres. Bendícenos en nuestro viaje.
O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
