El sueño misionero de llegar a todos
Eg. 31: El obispo siempre debe fomentar la comunión misionera en su Iglesia diocesana siguiendo el ideal de las primeras comunidades cristianas, donde los creyentes tenían un solo corazón y una sola alma (cf. Hch 4,32). Para eso, a veces estará delante para indicar el camino y cuidar la esperanza del pueblo, otras veces estará simplemente en medio de todos con su cercanía sencilla y misericordiosa, y en ocasiones deberá caminar detrás del pueblo para ayudar a los rezagados y, sobre todo, porque el rebaño mismo tiene su olfato para encontrar nuevos caminos. En su misión de fomentar una comunión dinámica, abierta y misionera, tendrá que alentar y procurar la maduración de los mecanismos de participación que propone el Código de Derecho Canónico y otras formas de diálogo pastoral, con el deseo de escuchar a todos y no sólo a algunos que le acaricien los oídos. Pero el objetivo de estos procesos participativos no será principalmente la organización eclesial, sino el sueño misionero de llegar a todos.
Este párrafo aborda la importancia de que un obispo conozca verdaderamente a su pueblo: a veces para guiar al pueblo, a veces para acompañarlo y a veces para seguir ayudando a los que se quedan atrás. Este llamado debe ser escuchado por todos los que participan en el liderazgo de la Iglesia. Todo ministerio proviene de su compromiso con el Pueblo de Dios. Todo lo que se hace en nombre de la Iglesia no es para mantener a la institución de la Iglesia, sino para que la institución sostenga y anime a personas en la fe. El “sueño misionero” es evangelizar a todos.
Oramos para que los líderes de la Iglesia reconozcan la importancia de la participación de los laicos. Tienen que caminar con los laicos mientras revelan sus esperanzas, valores, sueños y compromiso a Dios. El Papa Francisco visualiza el liderazgo a través del acompañamiento con el Pueblo de Dios. Siempre aprecio la forma desafiante en que el Padre Enrique López me dio la bienvenida al ministerio hispano. Él dijo: “Si no caminas con mi gente, no te molestes en aprender español”. Honestamente, mis esfuerzos por caminar con la comunidad fueron bendecidos por muchos en la comunidad hispana que me permitieron caminar con ellos. Muchos han compartido conmigo sus bendiciones, sus dificultades, sus sueños y sus luchas. Uno de mis mejores amigos me dijo: “Padre, su sangre es americana, pero su corazón es mexicano”. Todavía quiero hablar mejor, pero cuando camino con los pobres, acumulo gran bendición.
Oremos por todos los líderes de la Iglesia, que tengan la aspiración misionera de llegar a todos.

The missionary aspiration of reaching everyone
EG. 31: The bishop must always foster this missionary communion in his diocesan Church, following the ideal of the first Christian communities, in which the believers were of one heart and one soul (cf. Acts 4:32). To do so, he will sometimes go before his people, pointing the way and keeping their hope vibrant. At other times, he will simply be in their midst with his unassuming and merciful presence. At yet other times, he will have to walk after them, helping those who lag behind and – above all – allowing the flock to strike out on new paths. In his mission of fostering a dynamic, open and missionary communion, he will have to encourage and develop the means of participation proposed in the Code of Canon Law, and other forms of pastoral dialogue, out of a desire to listen to everyone and not simply to those who would tell him what he would like to hear. Yet the principal aim of these participatory processes should not be ecclesiastical organization but rather the missionary aspiration of reaching everyone.
This paragraph addresses the importance of a bishop truly knowing his people: at times to lead the people, at times to accompany them, and at times to follow helping those lagging behind. This call should be heard by all who participate in leadership in the Church. All ministry comes from their engagement with the People of God. Everything done in the name of the Church is not for maintaining the institution of the Church, but that the institution supports and animates people in the faith. Our “missionary aspiration” is to evangelize everyone.
We pray that leaders in the Church recognize the importance of participation of the laity. They need to walk with the laity as they reveal their hopes, values, dreams and commitment to God. Pope Francis envisions leadership by accompaniment with the People of God. I always cherish the challenging way that Fr. Enrique López welcomed me into Hispanic ministry. He said, “If you do not walk with my people, don´t bother learning Spanish.” Honestly, my efforts to walk with the community were blessed by so many in the Hispanic community who have let me walk with them. So many have shared with me their blessings, their hardships, their dreams and their struggles. One of my best Mexican friends told me, “Padre, your blood is American, but your heart is Mexican.” My speaking Spanish still needs improvement, but when one walks with the poor, you accumulate great blessing.
Let us pray for all leaders in the Church, that they have the missionary aspiration to reach everyone.
Oh Jesús, tú nos llamas: “Síganme”. Bendice, Señor, a todos los que acogen tu llamado. Puede que el camino no sea fácil, pero tenemos la confianza de que todo es posible si caminamos contigo. Que este viaje nos abra los ojos a las maravillas de tu amor por nosotros. Oramos por toda tu gente, por todos los creyentes e incrédulos, por los líderes y seguidores. Oramos por la sanación, el perdón, la compasión, la justicia y la paz. Oramos para que, al seguirte, nosotros también podamos ser pescadores de hombres. Bendícenos en nuestro viaje.
O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
