La parroquia está desactualizada?
(A veces me preocupa lo que pueda decir o escribir en estos blogs. Sé que hay muchos amigos, compañeros de trabajo, inmigrantes y migrantes que están siguiendo estas páginas. Ayer, creo que escribí una reflexión segura sobre el documento del Papa Francisco, La Alegría del Evangelio. Hoy, esto me hace poco nervioso. Cuestiono el ministerio “ordinario” de la Iglesia, porque muchas de las personas con las que he trabajado no pueden recibir los sacramentos por algunas prácticas comunes en muchas parroquias. Identificamos nuestro trabajo con los campesinos en la Diócesis de Fresno como “Ministerio Extraordinario”, que es un ministerio que el ministerio ordinario no hace bien).
La parroquia no es una estructura caduca (EG. 28)
Cuando el Papa Francisco escribió la Alegría del Evangelio, aún no habíamos experimentado la pandemia de COVID. Había desafíos que enfrentaba la institución de las parroquias. Antes y ciertamente después del COVID, las estructuras parroquiales necesitan renovación e incluso transformación. He pasado doce años en el ministerio parroquial, siete años como director de vocaciones, siete años predicando misiones parroquiales y más de veinte años en ministerios extraordinarios con jóvenes y migrantes. Las parroquias pueden ser centros vibrantes para la evangelización, pero a muchas personas les resulta difícil experimentar una relación significativa con la fe católica en las parroquias de hoy. Esa realidad se ha visto exacerbada por la pandemia.
La gente quiere volver a una vida “normal”. Eso incluye nuestra vida de fe. El Papa Francisco llama a las parroquias a estar “orientadas a la misión”. Sin embargo, observó: “Tenemos que reconocer que el llamado a la revisión y renovación de las parroquias todavía no ha dado suficientes frutos en orden a que estén todavía más cerca de la gente, que sean ámbitos de viva comunión y participación, y se orienten completamente a la misión.” (EG. 28)
En mi trabajo con migrantes, es demasiado amable reconocer simplemente que “revisar y renovar… no ha sido suficiente”.Las personas cuyas vidas están marcadas por la inestabilidad, la pobreza, la falta de recursos y la movilidad que obliga a las personas a desarraigar familias y hogares con frecuencia, son frecuentemente ignoradas en las parroquias. Muchos no pueden establecer una presencia constante en las parroquias para siquiera ser reconocidos. Cuando buscan los sacramentos para ellos mismos o para sus hijos, encuentran obstáculos para recibir la Eucaristía y otros sacramentos.
En el tiempo pascual, escuchamos las historias de la Iglesia primitiva respondiendo a las necesidades de las personas en el momento. En Pentecostés se sumaron a la comunidad 3.000 personas. Pedro sanó al paralítico en la puerta del templo. Felipe bautizó al etíope. Antes de COVID, trabajé en el ministerio con campesinos migrantes cuyos hijos no podían cumplir con los requisitos de muchas parroquias para la recepción de los sacramentos. Después del COVID, hay familias que todavía esperan que sus hijos reciban los sacramentos meses después de completar los programas parroquiales de preparación. Muchos de los pobres se están dando por vencidos.
No es mi deseo negar importancia al lugar de las parroquias en la vida católica, pero comencemos a realizar una vida parroquial renovada y vibrante. Es razonable dudar de la institución parroquial si no hay una revisión y renovación visible. No está bien que tantos pobres tengan poco o ningún acceso a los sacramentos.

(Sometimes, I worry about what I may say or write on these blogs. I know that there are many friends, coworkers, immigrants and migrants who are following these pages. Yesterday, I think I wrote a safe reflection on Pope Francis’ document, The Joy of the Gospel. Today, this might be a bit edgy. I question the “ordinary” ministry of the Church, because many of the people with whom I have worked are shut off from the sacraments by some common practices in many parishes. We identified our work with farm workers in the Diocese of Fresno as “Extraordinary Ministry”, that is ministry that ordinary ministry does not do well.)
The parish is not an outdated institution

When Pope Francis wrote the Joy of the Gospel, we had not yet experienced the COVID pandemic. There were challenges facing the institution of parishes. Before and certainly in the aftermath of COVID, parish structures need renewal and even transformation. I have spent twelve years in parish ministry, seven years as vocation director, seven years preaching parish missions, and over twenty years in extraordinary ministries with youth and migrants. Parishes can be vibrant centers for evangelization, but many people find it difficult to experience meaningful relationship with the Catholic faith in parishes today. That reality has been exacerbated by the pandemic.
People want to return to a “normal” life. That includes our faith life. Pope Francis calls for parishes to be “mission-oriented”. Yet he observed, “We must admit, though, that the call to review and renew our parishes has not yet sufficed to bring them nearer to people, to make them environments of living communion and participation, and to make them completely mission-oriented.” (EG 28)
In my work with migrants, it is too kind to just recognize that “review and renew…has not yet sufficed.” People whose lives are marked by instability, poverty, lack of resources, and mobility that forces people to frequently uproot families and households, are frequently overlooked in parishes. Many are unable to establish consistent presence in parishes to even be recognized. When they seek sacraments for themselves or for their children, they encounter obstacles to reception of Eucharist and other sacraments.
In the Easter season, we hear the stories of the early Church responding to people´s needs in the moment. On Pentecost 3,000 people were added to the community. Peter healed the crippled man at the temple gate. Philip baptized the Ethiopian. Before COVID, I worked in ministry with migrant farm workers whose children could not fulfill requirements of many parishes for reception of the sacraments. After COVID, there are families still waiting for their children to receive sacraments months after completing parish programs of preparation. Many of the poor are giving up.
It is not my wish to downplay the place of parishes in Catholic life, but let us begin to realize vibrant renewed parish life. It is reasonable to doubt the parish institution if there is no visible review and renewal. It is not acceptable that so many of the poor have little or no access to the sacraments.
Oh Jesús, tú nos llamas: “Síganme”. Bendice, Señor, a todos los que acogen tu llamado. Puede que el camino no sea fácil, pero tenemos la confianza de que todo es posible si caminamos contigo. Que este viaje nos abra los ojos a las maravillas de tu amor por nosotros. Oramos por toda tu gente, por todos los creyentes e incrédulos, por los líderes y seguidores. Oramos por la sanación, el perdón, la compasión, la justicia y la paz. Oramos para que, al seguirte, nosotros también podamos ser pescadores de hombres. Bendícenos en nuestro viaje.
O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
