Las Buenas Ovejas
Hoy celebramos el buen pastor, pero el Evangelio no se trata tanto del buen pastor como de las buenas ovejas. “Mis ovejas escuchan mi voz; yo las conozco y ellas me siguen”. ¿Quiénes fueron las buenas ovejas que siguieron a Jesús? Los pastores que le rindieron homenaje en el nacimiento del niño Jesús. Ana, una viuda profetisa que siempre estaba en el templo, unos pescadores, cobradores de impuestos, ciegos, cojos, una samaritana casada cinco veces, paralíticos, adúlteros, hasta un ladrón en la cruz.
Las buenas ovejas escuchan al Señor, conocen al Señor y siguen al Señor. ¿Quiénes son las ovejas hoy? Hay mucha gente muy versada en teología y sabiduría de la fe y la Iglesia, pero ¿escuchan? ¿Están escuchando a Cristo en la necesidad de los marginados de la Iglesia? El Papa Francisco dice que la mayor injusticia que sufren los pobres es la falta de atención espiritual. No está hablando de la falta de formación o de catequesis. Hay una diferencia entre la falta de cuidado espiritual y la falta de educación en la fe. Antes de que una persona reciba educación en la fe, necesita atención pastoral. El Papa Pablo VI dijo que nadie es evangelizado por la catequesis, son evangelizados por el testimonio de los fieles. El Papa Juan Pablo II dijo que necesitamos una evangelización que sea “nueva en su ardor, sus métodos y su expresión”.
Incluso cuando alimentamos a los hambrientos, vestimos a los pobres y damos la bienvenida al extranjero, hacemos más que ofrecer servicio social. Lo hacemos con amor y respeto en la atención espiritual que ofrecemos a los necesitados. Las ovejas son fieles y nos dan testimonio de una confianza en Dios porque reconocen su necesidad del amor y la protección de Dios.
Las ovejas escuchan la voz de Dios, escuchemos su voz y su testimonio a Jesús, su pastor.

The Good Sheep
Today we celebrate the good shepherd, but the Gospel is not so much about the good shepherd as the good sheep. “My sheep hear my voice; I know them, and they follow me.” Who were the good sheep who followed Jesus? The shepherds who gave him homage at the birth of the child Jesus. Ana, a widow prophetess who was always at the temple, a motley group of fishermen, tax collectors, the blind, the lame, a Samaritan woman married five times, paralytics, adulterers, even a thief on the cross.
The good sheep listen to the Lord, they know the Lord and they follow the Lord. Who are the sheep today? There are many people well versed in theology and knowledge about faith and the Church, but do they listen? Are they listening to Christ in the needs of those on the margins of the Church? Pope Francis says that the greatest injustice that the poor suffer is the lack of spiritual care. He is not talking about the lack of formation or catechesis. There is a difference between lack of spiritual care and a lack of education in the faith. Before a person receives education in the faith, one needs pastoral care. Pope Paul VI said that no one is evangelized by catechesis, they are evangelized by the witness of the faithful. Pope John Paul II said that we need evangelization that is “new in its ardor, its methods and expression.”
Even when we feed the hungry, cloth the poor and welcome the stranger, there is more that we do than offer social service. We do it in love and respect in the spiritual care that we offer to those in need. The sheep are faithful and witness to us a confidence in God because they acknowledge their need for God’s love and protection.
The sheep hear God’s voice, let us hear their voice and their witness to Jesus, their shepherd.

Oh Jesús, tú nos llamas: “Síganme”. Bendice, Señor, a todos los que acogen tu llamado. Puede que el camino no sea fácil, pero tenemos la confianza de que todo es posible si caminamos contigo. Que este viaje nos abra los ojos a las maravillas de tu amor por nosotros. Oramos por toda tu gente, por todos los creyentes e incrédulos, por los líderes y seguidores. Oramos por la sanación, el perdón, la compasión, la justicia y la paz. Oramos para que, al seguirte, nosotros también podamos ser pescadores de hombres. Bendícenos en nuestro viaje.
O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
