Being blessed by the poor / Ser bendecido por los pobres

Being blessed by the poor

It is easy to tell stories about meeting the poor in so many vulnerable circumstances. Sometimes, the poor can be pushy about needing attention. Sometimes they are not easy to assist, but Jesus said that when we meet them, we encounter him. During this Lent, I have tried to count the ways the poor bless me. I have been blessed by Jesus many times in my encounters with people on the margins, sometimes very directly. I told this memory before, but this woman occupied my prayers today.

Araceli lay dying in a hospital bed. I went to say Mass for her, and her family gathered in the room. She was struggling greatly to breathe, and I feared that she may pass before the communion rite. She was calm after the communion and after I gave the final blessing for the Mass, she said, “Padre, do you want my blessing.” I knelt beside her bed and felt the presence of Jesus blessing me as she lay her hands on my head. Then, she blessed her husband, her children, her parents, her sister, and her godparents.

She continued to have strength for visits for two more days before she passed. She was only 34 years old, but as she blessed me and all the people in the room, we knew that Jesus was present. She brought him to us.

O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
