Recibir a los refugiados
La primera lectura de hoy del primer domingo de Cuaresma llama la atención sobre Abraham, el “arameo errante”. En un momento en que la migración se encuentra en los niveles más altos de la historia mundial, otro millón de refugiados huyó de Ucrania y llamó la atención del mundo sobre una nueva y trágica guerra. Admiramos a Polonia y a las naciones que reciben a los refugiados. Oramos por los refugiados y por las naciones que los reconocen como hermanos, no como ‘otros’, ‘alienos’ o ‘ilegales’. El Antiguo Testamento habla con orgullo de antepasados que emigraron desde la época de Abraham hasta la época de Moisés. Los migrantes se convirtieron en “una nación grande, fuerte y numerosa”.
‘Mi padre fue un arameo errante,
que bajó a Egipto y estableció
allí con muy pocas personas;
pero luego creció hasta
convertirse en una gran nación,
potente y numerosa.’
No hay nada glamoroso en vivir en un campo de refugiados. Existe incertidumbre sobre dónde se puede recibir al refugiado, si es que se recibe. Las naciones del mundo se ven desafiadas por la responsabilidad de recibir a las víctimas de las guerras y otras tragedias. Vivir en un país extranjero como un “alieno” nunca es fácil.
Hoy, esperamos que podamos ser el “Buen Samaritano”, cuidando las heridas de los oprimidos del mundo. Mientras el mundo admira la valentía del pueblo ucraniano que se opone al tirano más imponente del mundo, que nos preocupemos por los cónyuges, los hijos y todos los refugiados de aquellos que noblemente defienden sus propios países. Cuando recibimos migrantes y refugiados del mundo, honramos a nuestros antepasados que emigraron de lugares de desesperación para establecerse en esta nación.

To Receive Refugees
Today’s first reading for the first Sunday of Lent calls attention to Abraham, the “wandering Aramean”. At a time when migration is at the highest levels in world history, another million refugees fled Ukraine bringing the attention of the world to a tragic new war. We admire Poland and those nations receiving the refugees. We pray for refugees and for the nations recognizing them as brothers and sisters, not as ‘others’, ‘aliens’ or ‘illegals.’ The Old Testament speaks with pride of ancestors migrating from the time of Abraham to the time of Moses. The migrants became “a nation great, strong and numerous.”
‘My father was a wandering Aramean
who went down to Egypt with a small
household and lived there as an alien.
But there he became a nation
great, strong, and numerous.’
There is nothing glamorous about living in a migrant refugee camp. There is uncertainty of where the refugee may be received, if they are received at all. Nations of the world are challenged by the responsibility of receiving victims of wars and other tragedies. Living in a foreign country as an “alien” is never easy.
Today, we hope that we may be the “Good Samaritan,” caring for the wounds of the oppressed of the world. As the world admires the courage of the Ukrainian people standing up to the world’s leading tyrant, may we care for the spouses, the children and all refugees of those nobly seeking peace in their own lands. When we receive migrants and refugees of the world, we honor our family members who emigrated from places of desperation to establish themselves in the United States.

Oh Jesús, tú nos llamas: “Síganme”. Bendice, Señor, a todos los que acogen tu llamado. Puede que el camino no sea fácil, pero tenemos la confianza de que todo es posible si caminamos contigo. O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
