2. Alleluia: Easter Monday – Lunes de la Pascua
Presenté esta historia hace un tiempo, pero es bien para este día. Es una historia de comprensión del significado de la resurrección.
Terry Smith
Me hice amigo de Terry Smith en 1961 cuando entramos en el seminario menor redentorista. Él era de Grand Rapids y yo de Omaha. Jugamos fútbol y hockey. Me enseñó a tocar la trompeta y frecuentemente caminamos en nuestro tiempo libre. Compartimos nuestros sueños de convertirnos en misioneros, nuestra soledad de estar tan lejos de nuestras familias. Después de cuatro años de secundaria y dos de colegio, entramos en el noviciado redentorista. Luego llegó un día fatídico. Dos días antes de que profesáramos votos como Redentoristas, jugábamos al fútbol. Se acostó en el suelo con gran dolor. Se rompió la pierna y fue trasladado al hospital.
En el hospital, descubrimos que la pierna se rompió porque tenía cáncer de hueso. Dos días después, mis compañeros y yo profesamos nuestros votos como Redentoristas, y Terry se sometió a una cirugía para quitarle la pierna. Regresó a casa con su familia con la esperanza de recuperarse. Un año después, vino a visitarnos al seminario. La noche antes de irse a casa, dijo: “Puedo morir a los 22 años y mi vida estará completa, y tú puedes morir a los 82 años y tu vida estará completa. No importa cuántos días nos dé Dios; lo importa es que hacemos con cada día que Dios nos da”. Sabíamos que no lo volveríamos a ver.
Tres meses después, recuerdo estar en el gimnasio en el seminario cuando un anuncio llegó a través del P.A. Terry murió el 1 de enero de 1970. Mis compañeros y yo fuimos a Grand Rapids para su funeral. En el año y medio después de dejar el noviciado, Terry visitó a muchos que compartieron su experiencia de perder su pierna. Había muchos soldados heridos que regresaban de Vietnam con quienes se hizo amigo. La iglesia estaba llena en su funeral. Dejó un regalo especial a todos los que lo conocieron mientras preparaba una tarjeta sagrada para recordar su vida. En la tarjeta estaba su profesión de fe en Jesús. Escribió: “No preguntes por qué he muerto. Pregunta por qué viviré”.
En el tiempo después de que le diagnosticaron cáncer, Terry escribió un diario espiritual sobre su muerte. Llamó a su diario, “Mi Lunes de Pascua”.

Terry Smith
I became friends with Terry Smith in 1961. We entered the Redemptorist minor seminary. He was from Grand Rapids and I was from Omaha. We played soccer and hockey. He taught me how to play the trumpet and often we went for walks on our free time. We shared our dreams of becoming missionaries, our loneliness at being so far from home. After four years of high school and two years of college, we entered the Redemptorist novitiate. Then came a fateful day. Two days before we would profess vows as Redemptorists, we were playing soccer. He lay on the ground in great pain. He broke his leg and was taken to the hospital.
At the hospital, we found out that the leg broke because he had cancer of the bone. Two days later, my classmates and I professed our vows as Redemptorists, and Terry had surgery to remove his leg. He went home to his family with hopes for recovery. A year later, he came to visit us in the seminary. On the night before going home, he said, “I may die at 22, and my life will be complete, and you may die at 82 and your life will be complete. It does not matter how many days God gives us; it is what we do with each Day that God gives us.” We knew that we would not see him again.
Three months later, I remember being in a locker room at the seminary when an announcement came over the P.A. Terry died, January 1, 1970. My classmates and I went to Grand Rapids for his funeral. In the year and a half after leaving the novitiate, Terry visited many who shared in his experience of losing his leg. There were many wounded soldiers returning from Viet Nam whom he befriended. The church was packed at his funeral. He left a special gift to all who knew him as he prepared the holy card to remember his life. On the card was his profession of faith in Jesus. He wrote, “Don’t ask why I have died. Ask why I shall live.”
In the time after being diagnosed with cancer, Terry wrote a spiritual journal about his dying. He called his diary, “My Easter Monday.”

O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
