Walking with people in a crisis

Yesterday was the feast of the Good Shepherd. Jesus said, “I know my sheep…” His sheep were the blind, the deaf, the lame, the lepers, the tax collectors, the woman caught in adultery, those mourning the deaths of their children, the Samaritans, and all those outside the concern of respected religious leaders. He healed, he touched, he taught and he walked with all people living in desperation.

For 30 years, I have had the privilege of people sharing with me their stories of migration. Listening to the stories informs my journey with people living in desperation. A young man told me of leaving his country of origin by saying, “After they murdered my father and my brother, I knew I had to leave.” It did not matter who the “they” were. People leave countries of origin because of desperation.

For some, migration may lead to new hope, stability and quality of life, but it the stories of migration often mark lives of continuing desperation. As an itinerant preacher, a missionary, I love to tell the stories of the successful migrant, the inspirational migrant, but I confess that “walking with people in a crisis” is filled with sadness and few great triumphs. Walking with people in crisis means helping people simply get through the day to day struggle of life.

Often it is a ministry of accompanying people in the painful moments when life is not in our control. The COVID pandemic is not simply a news story to be played with by politicians or to be waved away by our promise to pray for someone. For those living in the crisis of COVID, the Good Shepherd is a companion on the journey. He does not take away the pain, but he walks with his sheep. Jesus used this moment to also state that he lays down his life for his sheep. May God help us accompany those suffering around us.

O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
