“De esta crisis podemos salir mejor o peor”
El Papa Francisco advierte que cada persona tiene un papel que desempeñar en la vida después de la crisis. Tenemos una misión, un papel que desempeñar en la creación de un futuro mejor. Esta larga cita llama la atención sobre las crisis acumulativas que enfrentamos más allá de Covid.
“La crisis de Covid puede parecer especial porque afecta a la mayor parte de la humanidad. Pero solo es especial por lo visible que es. Hay miles de otras crisis que son igualmente graves, pero que están lo suficientemente lejos de algunos de nosotros como para poder actuar, como si no existieran. Piense, por ejemplo, en las guerras esparcidas por diferentes partes del mundo; en la producción y el comercio de armas; en los cientos de miles de refugiados que huyen de la pobreza, el hambre y la falta de oportunidades; de cambio climático. Estas tragedias pueden parecernos lejanas, como parte de las noticias diarias que, lamentablemente, no logran movernos a cambiar nuestras agendas y prioridades, pero como la crisis de Covid, afectan a toda la humanidad.
Basta con mirar las cifras, lo que gasta una nación en armas, y se te hiele la sangre. Luego, compare esas cifras con las estadísticas de UNICEF sobre cuántos niños carecen de educación y se acuestan con hambre, y se dará cuenta de quién paga el precio del gasto en armas. En los primeros cuatro meses de este año, 3,7 millones de personas murieron de hambre. ¿Y cuántos han muerto a causa de la guerra? El gasto en armas destruye a la humanidad. Es un coronavirus muy grave, pero como sus víctimas nos están ocultas, no hablamos de eso.
De manera similar, para algunos está oculta la destrucción del mundo natural. Pensamos que no nos afectaba, porque estaba sucediendo en otra parte. Pero de repente lo vemos, lo entendemos: un barco cruza el Polo Norte por primera vez, y nos damos cuenta de que las lejanas inundaciones y los incendios forestales son parte de la misma crisis que nos involucra a todos. Si bien no sabemos si saldremos mejor o peor de la crisis, sabemos que no estamos indefensos. Tenemos la capacidad de mejorar nuestro futuro. Que Dios nos bendiga en el camino.

Pope Francis warns that each person has a role to play in life after the crisis. We have a mission, a role to play in creating a better future. This lengthy quotation calls attention to the cumulative crises that we face beyond Covid.
“The Covid crisis may seem special because it affects most of humankind. But it is only special in how visible it is. There are a thousand other crises that are just as dire, but are just far enough from some of us that we can act as if they don’t exist. Think, for example, of the wars scattered across different parts of the world; of the production and trade in weapons; of the hundreds of thousands of refugees fleeing poverty, hunger, and lack of opportunity; of climate change. These tragedies may seem distant from us, as part of the daily news that, sadly, fails to move us to change our agendas and priorities. But like the Covid crisis, they affect the whole of humanity.
Just look at the figures, what a nation spends on weapons, and your blood runs cold. Then compare those figures with UNICEF’s statistics on how many children lack schooling and go to bed hungry, and you realize who pays the price for arms spending. In the first four months of this year, 3.7 million people died of hunger. And how many have died from war? Arms spending destroys humanity. It is a very serious coronavirus, but because its victims are hidden from us, we don’t talk about it.
Similarly hidden to some is the destruction of the natural world. We thought it didn’t affect us, because it was happening elsewhere. But suddenly we see it, we get it: a boat crosses the North Pole for the first time, and we realize the distant floods and forest fires are part of the same crisis that involves us all. (p. 4-5)
While we do not know if we will come out of the crisis better or worse, we know that we are not helpless. We have the ability to make our future better. May God bless us along the way.

O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
