You are the temple of God / Son el templo de Dios

You are the temple of God

As Paul writes to the Corinthians:

You are the temple of God….for the temple of God, which you are, is holy.

Paul wrote this to his beloved community in Corinth. We have in Scriptures two letters to the Corinthians, which probably were originally parts of several letters that he wrote to the people of Corinth. His love for that community comes through in so many ways in those letters, but these words that we read at this Sunday liturgy speak to us as the baptized people of God. We “are the temple of God.”

May all believe those words. God takes away all of our imperfections, heals our wounds and forgives our sins. We become the temple of God. Many people rejoice in the forgiveness that we receive in the sacraments of our faith, but some fail to show it in action. There are some people, who are regular in their practice of the faith, who frequently go to confession, but still feel unable to receive the Eucharist. Some express shame for their sins, long after they have received the grace of absolution.

Pope Francis says that we have too many sourpusses in our community of faith. We need to witness the joy of the gospel. Still, many are reluctant to accept a joyful faith. We “are the temple of God.” Let us confidently smile at the realization that in faith, we truly “are the temple of God.”

O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
