Sin vergüenza, solo alegría
Ayer escribí sobre un amigo que estaba desanimado por una homilía que regañó a los campesinos pobres que se reunieron para una misa especial celebrando su herencia católica. Como clérigos y trabajadores religiosos, debemos recordar que somos enviados para llevar la “buena nueva” a los pobres. Este es nuestro ministerio en todo momento.
Deja de enfocar en lo que está mal
En casi cincuenta años como sacerdote, nunca había escuchado a tanta gente hablar de las faltas de los demás, como oigo en este tiempo. Ha sido demasiado énfasis en los medios de comunicación durante muchos años. Produce toda la energía de la política. Está dividiendo a naciones y a las comunidades eclesiales. Está dividiendo a las familias. Necesitamos detener nuestro impulso de criticar a los demás. Incluso tenemos que dejar de centrarnos constantemente en nuestras propias faltas. La negatividad que nos rodea nos impide escuchar y ofrecer la “buena nueva” a todos.
“Todo tiene su tiempo y su sazón” (Ec. 3:1). Necesitamos examinar nuestras acciones morales. Hay un tiempo y un lugar para tal examen, pero no es el final del mensaje de Cristo o del Espíritu Santo. Cuando comenzamos la Misa, confesamos nuestros pecados y, después de orar por el perdón, cantamos “Gloria a Dios”. El resto de la Misa, nos alimentamos de la buena nueva de la fe y entramos en comunión con Cristo y con nuestra iglesia.
No empeores los momentos difíciles
En los últimos dos años, he trabajado con muchas familias en duelo por la pérdida de seres queridos. Con demasiada frecuencia se hace un comentario sobre las faltas de la persona o de los miembros de la familia. Sé que tales comentarios estuvieron presentes en los funerales en el pasado, pero estos comentarios y juicios negativos son más comunes y amargos hoy en día. No entiendo tales comentarios. Ante el final de la vida, la pérdida de la vida, el tiempo del duelo, se necesita que seamos testigos del amor y de la misericordia de Dios.
Estos momentos no son solo un momento para evitar castigar a los demás, sino que pueden ser un momento de gracia. Hay “buenas noticias” en nuestra respuesta fiel a la muerte. Cuando recuerdo a mis seres queridos en mi vida después de que han fallecido, nunca recuerdo faltas, solo los momentos de alegría, consuelo y respeto.
Cuando ofrezco Misa en un campamento de migrantes, en una lechería y hasta en una prisión, reconozco que son momentos para fomentar la fe y la vida amorosa. La predicación es una tremenda responsabilidad. Siempre es un momento para levantar y motivar a las personas de fe. Un amigo sacerdote dijo que: “Es una tontería predicar sobre aquellos que no están en la iglesia. No están aquí para escucharte”.
Haz de la “Alegría del Evangelio” tu mensaje
Nunca ha habido un momento en que fue tan urgente predicar la “Alegría del Evangelio.” Haz que sea tu mensaje. Nadie es evangelizado sin conocer el amor de Jesús.

Yesterday, I wrote about a friend who was discouraged by a homily that chastised poor farm workers who gathered for a special Mass to celebrate their Catholic heritage. As clergy and religious workers, we need to remember that we are sent to bring good news to the poor. This is our ministry at all times.
Stop focusing on what is wrong
In almost fifty years as a priest, I have never heard so many people speaking about the faults of others as I do today. It has been too much of an emphasis in the news media for many years. It produces all the energy of politics. It is dividing nations and religious communities. It is dividing families. We need to stop our impulse to criticize others. We even need to stop constantly focusing on our own faults. The negativity around us prevents us from hearing and offering the “good news” to all.
“There is a time and a season for everything” (Ec.3:1). We need to examine our moral actions. There is a time and a place for such examination, but it is not the end of the message of Christ or the Holy Spirit. When we begin Mass, we confess our sinfulness, and after praying for forgiveness, we sing “Glory to God.” The rest of the Mass, we nourish ourselves with the good news of the faith and enter into communion with Christ and with our church.
Do not make difficult times worse
In the past two years, I have worked with many families grieving the loss of loved ones. Too often there is a comment made about faults of the person or family members. I know that such comments were present at funerals in the past, but such negative comments and judgments are more common and more bitter today. I do not understand such comments. Facing the end of life, the loss of life, the time for grief needs us to be witnesses to the love and mercy of God.
These moments are not only a time to avoid chastising others, it can be a moment of grace. There is “good news” in our faithful response to death. When remembering loved ones in my life after they have passed, I never remember faults, just the times of joy, comfort and respect.
When I offer Mass in a migrant camp, in a dairy and even in a prison, I recognize that these are moments to encourage faith and loving life. Preaching is a tremendous responsibility. It is always a time to lift up and motivate people of faith. One priest friend said that, “It is foolish to preach about those who are not at church. They are not here to hear you.”
Make the “Joy of the Gospel” your message
There has never been a time when it was so urgent to preach the “Joy of the Gospel”. Make it your message. No one is evangelized without knowing the love of Jesus.

May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
