Un viaje extraordinario
(Para aquellos que son nuevos en este sitio web, bienvenidos. Soy el P. Miguel McAndrew, C.Ss.R. Para aquellos que siguen regularmente estos blogs, ofrezco las reflexiones para los próximos días, como una revisión de mis experiencias de los últimos cinco meses).
Durante los últimos cinco meses, estudiando la vida de migrantes en la frontera de México para los Redentoristas de México y Norte America. Los Redentoristas reconocen la preocupación del Papa Francisco “por la falta de atención espiritual” a los pobres. (EG 200) Nuestra investigación trata sobre el camino de extranjeros y mexicanos desplazados en busca de oportunidad de refugio, vida y esperanza en los estados del norte de México. Este estudio se ha centrado en los albergues y centros de servicio para migrantes en todo México.
¿Estudio?
Lo serio de los últimos cinco meses es estudio de la situación de los migrantes, especialmente en la frontera México/Estados Unidos. Hemos visitado a personas comprometidas en el ministerio con migrantes en las ciudades de México, lejos de la frontera que experimentan el paso de migrantes por sus ciudades. Existe una notable red de albergues y centros de servicio en la Ciudad de México, San Luis Potosí, Torreón, Monterrey y muchas de las ciudades en las rutas migratorias desde la frontera sur de México hacia el norte. Visitamos las nueve diócesis católicas que limitan con los Estados Unidos. Este estudio ayudará a los Redentoristas de América del Norte a decidir cómo, dónde y para quién comenzamos una iniciativa en el ministerio de la migración.
¿Sabático?
Si bien el estudio objetivo de la frontera es importante, para mí esto ha sido como un año sabático. Este estudio ha sido un repaso de mi vida en el ministerio hispano. Cuando comencé a trabajar en el ministerio hispano, me dijeron: “Si no caminas con mi gente, no te molestes en aprender español”. Treinta años caminando con inmigrantes me prepararon para este estudio, pero nuestro estudio se convirtió en algo más que una investigación simple. Las personas vulnerables contaron sus historias de pérdida, opresión, peligro, depresión, miedo y la crisis que los llevó a abandonar sus hogares. También contaron las historias de las personas que los ayudaron y consolaron en el viaje. Y continuaron teniendo esperanza y fe, incluso después de sufrir mucha pena en el camino. Incluso en medio de las dificultades, experimentamos risas, alegría y esperanza. Si las personas que experimentan tales dificultades tienen fe, ¿cómo no vamos a ver el rostro de Jesús en los pobres?
¿Aventura?
Recorrimos toda la frontera México/Estados Unidos, dividiendo nuestras visitas en tres tramos. Primero visitamos Tijuana, Mexicali y Nogales; luego Nuevo Laredo, Reynosa y Matamoros; y finalmente, Piedras Negras, Juárez, Nuevas Casas Grandes y Chihuahua. La mayoría de las veces viajábamos en autobús o en coche. Fuimos a algunas comunidades muy pobres, pero nunca encontramos peligro; gracias a Dios. Fue una oportunidad para dar gracias a Dios por las muchas bendiciones en la vida que he experimentado. Los últimos cinco meses han sido una aventura.

A remarkable journey
(For those who are new to this website, Welcome. I am Fr. Mike McAndrew, C.Ss.R. For those who regularly follow these blogs, I offer the reflections for the next few days, as a review of my experiences over the past five months.)
For the past five months, I have been traveling through Mexico doing research for Redemptorists of North America. We, Redemptorists, recognize the concern of Pope Francis “the lack of spiritual care” of the poor. (EG 200) Our research is about the journey of foreign nationals and displaced Mexicans seeking opportunity for refuge, life and hope in the northern states of Mexico and the United States. Our study has focused on ‘casas migrantes’ (shelters) and service centers for migrants throughout Mexico.
Study?
The serious part of the past five months is studying the migrant situation, especially on the Mexico / United States border. We have visited people engaged in ministry with migrants in the cities of Mexico, far from the border that experience migrants passing through their cities. There is a remarkable network of shelters and service centers in Mexico City, San Luis Potosi, Torreon, Monterrey and many of the cities on migration routes from the southern border of Mexico to the north. We visited all nine Catholic dioceses that border the United States. Our study will help the Redemptorists of North America decide how, where, and for whom we begin our initiative in migration ministry.
Sabbatical?
While the objective study of the border is important, for me this has been a sabbatical. This study has been a review of my life in Hispanic ministry. When I began working in Hispanic ministry, I was told, “If you don’t walk with my people, don’t bother learning Spanish.” Thirty years walking with immigrants prepared me for this study, but our study became more than simply research. Vulnerable people told their stories of loss, oppression, danger, depression, fear and the crisis that moved them to leave their homes. They also told the stories of people who aided and comforted them on the journey. And they continued to have hope and faith, even after suffering many hardships on the journey. Even in the midst of hardships, we experienced laughter, joy and hope. If people experiencing such hardships have faith, how can we not see the face of Jesus in the poor?
Adventure?
We traveled the entire Mexico / United States border, dividing our visits into three sections. First, we visited Tijuana, Mexicali and Nogales; then Nuevo Laredo, Reynosa and Matamoros; and finally, Piedras Negras, Juarez, Nuevas Casas Grandes and Chihuahua. We mostly traveled by bus or car. We went to some very poor communities, but never encountered danger; thanks be to God. It was an opportunity to give thanks to God for the many blessings in life that I have experienced. The past five months has been an adventure.

O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
