Tratamiento de los migrantes
Mientras viajamos por México, hemos conocido a algunos maravillosos cuidadores de migrantes. La foto de arriba es de voluntarios y religiosos dedicados en una casa migrante en la frontera. El trato a los migrantes en estos centros es inspirador. Uno de los elementos importantes es la atención sin juicio y sin costo para el migrante. Hay personas detrás de estos ministerios que son cuidadores de amor y compasión. Dan información honesta a la gente. Tratan a las personas con una dignidad desconocida en la sociedad. Su labor está llena de angustia. No solo reconocen las pruebas del migrante, sino que su ministerio puede ser uno de los pocos respiros de las dificultades que los migrantes enfrentarán en los días, semanas e incluso años de peregrinación.
Lamentablemente, somos testigos de la crueldad inherente a las acciones de las autoridades de las naciones que no protegen a sus ciudadanos, y de las autoridades de las naciones que no tratan a los migrantes con dignidad. Mientras viajábamos en un autobús de Monterrey a Piedras Negras, Coahuila, nuestro autobús se detuvo cinco veces, obligando a todos los pasajeros a mostrar su ciudadanía, pasaportes o sus permisos para estar en México. Las paradas las hacían militares o policías estatales. Al salir de Monterrey, nuestras maletas fueron revisadas en busca de contrabando, y en un sitio de revisión tuvimos que volver a pasar nuestras maletas por una máquina de rayos X. Si bien no es ilegal que los inmigrantes viajen en autobús, no está permitido en algunos estados. Me sorprendió que llegamos a tiempo, lo que significa que las muchas revisiones están previstas en los horarios de los autobuses.
Mientras viajábamos con un sacerdote a uno de los refugios para migrantes, vimos a seis jóvenes detenidos por la policía. Su único error es que son ciudadanos extranjeros. En el albergue, nos dijeron que muchos migrantes experimentan maltrato y robo de su dinero y documentos a manos de la policía. Estos robos son tan comunes que muchos migrantes suben fotos de sus documentos a familiares y amigos para que, en caso de que se los roben, puedan recuperarlos cuando sea necesario.
Con todas las pruebas de los migrantes, su continua lucha por una vida mejor es inspiradora. Es la fe y la esperanza de los migrantes lo que todas las naciones y pueblos necesitan conocer. Reconozco que el testimonio de las personas en la imagen de arriba es solo un momento en la vida de los migrantes a quienes sirven, pero por favor, no se dejen engañar por los negadores de la misericordia sobre los verdaderos santos en nuestras fronteras. Los cuidadores de los migrantes son laicos y religiosos, mexicanos, estadounidenses e internacionales. La mayor parte de la atención la realizan voluntarios que son migrantes que esperan su turno para escuchar sus peticiones de ayuda. Que Dios esté con todos los cuidadores y con todos los migrantes.

Treatment of migrants
As we travel in Mexico, we have met some wonderful care givers for migrants. The above photo is of dedicated volunteers and religious at a casa migrante on the border. The treatment of the migrants at these centers is inspiring. One of the important elements is the care given with no judgment and no cost to the migrant. There are people behind these ministries are givers of love and compassion. They give honest information to the people. They treat people with dignity that is unmatched in society. Their labor is filled with heartache as they not only recognize the trials of the migrant, but that their ministry may be one of the few respites from the hardships that the migrants will face in the days, weeks and even years ahead.
Sadly, we witness the cruelty inherent in actions of authorities in nations failing to protect its citizens, and in authorities of nations failing to treat migrants with dignity. As we rode a bus from Monterrey to Piedras Negras, Coahuila, our bus was stopped five times, making all passengers show their citizenship, passports or their permissions to be in Mexico. The stops were done by military or by state police. On leaving Monterrey, our bags were checked for contraband, and at one revision site we had to put our bags through an Xray machine again. While it is not against the law for migrants to travel by bus, it is not allowed in some states. I was amazed that we arrived on time, meaning that the many revisions are planned into the bus schedules.
As we rode with a priest to one of the migrant shelters, we saw six young men detained by police. Their only wrong is that they are foreign nationals. At the shelter, we were told that many migrants experience mistreatment, and theft of their money and documents at the hands of police. These thefts are so common that many migrants upload photos of their documents to family and friends so that if they are stolen, they may recover them when needed.
With all the trials of the migrants, their continued struggle to seek a better life is inspiring. It is the faith and hope of the migrants that all nations and people need to know. I recognize that the witness of the people in the picture above is just a moment in the lives of the migrants whom they serve, but please, do not let the deniers of mercy mislead you on true saints on our borders. Those caring for the migrants are laity and religious, Mexican, Americans and internationals. Most of the care giving is done be volunteers who are themselves migrants who are waiting their turn for a hearing of their petitions for relief. May God be with all care givers and with all migrants.

Oramos por la sanación, el perdón, la compasión, la justicia y la paz. Oramos para que, al seguirte, nosotros también podamos ser pescadores de hombres. Bendícenos en nuestro viaje.
O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
