Hay Un Camino
(Después de cincuenta años, todavía creo)
Crecí en una parroquia católica de cuello azul en Omaha, Nebraska. Los padres de mis amigos y compañeros de clase eran carpinteros, plomeros, pintores y electricistas. Había trabajadores de ferrocarriles y empacadoras de carne. Había maestras, enfermeras, empleado de tiendas, policía y bomberos. Muchos de los hombres regresaron del servicio en la Segunda Guerra Mundial y Corea. Era una comunidad que ayudaba a los vecinos en momentos de necesidad. Un presidente pidió a Estados Unidos que “no pregunte qué puede hacer nuestro país por usted, sino qué puede hacer usted por su país”. Prometió que habría un hombre en la luna en una década. En los momentos difíciles, creímos que había una manera de resolver problemas y abordar las necesidades humanas.
No solo era la creencia de que hay una manera de resolver los problemas de nuestras familias, nuestros vecindarios y nuestra nación, sino que creíamos que hay un camino hacia la paz en nuestros corazones y en nuestras comunidades de fe. El Papa pidió un Concilio y que necesitábamos aire fresco en nuestra Iglesia. Los líderes de derechos civiles nos pidieron que enfrentemos nuestras injusticias. Creíamos que hay un camino a la paz y no caminaríamos por ese camino solos. En la Última Cena, Jesús dijo: “Yo soy el camino”. Mientras profesábamos que Jesús es el camino, necesitábamos encontrarnos con Jesús, encontrarnos con él personalmente. Jesús nos dijo dónde se le podía encontrar: “Cuando tenía hambre, me diste de comer. Cuando tenía sed, me diste de beber. Cuando era un extraño, me recibías …”
Incluso con el malestar incómodo que se observa al enfrentarnos al racismo, el incendio de las ciudades y nuestra creciente participación en una guerra en Vietnam, crecimos creyendo que, sin importar el problema o la crisis, hay una manera de hacer de nuestro mundo un lugar mejor. . Cuando era joven, mi respuesta a esa creencia fue convertirme en misionero, sacerdote, Redentorista.
Mucho ha sucedido en los años desde que profesé los votos como Redentorista en 1968, y fui ordenado sacerdote en 1973. El Camino prometido a Jesús tiene muchas curvas, cimas de montañas y valles. Es hermoso ver el mundo desde la cima de la montaña, pero desde el valle no vemos la cima de la montaña. Solo vemos la colina cuesta que tenemos que subir. Pero, hay un camino.
Cuando comienza un nuevo año, nos volvemos a la fe. No estamos solos en este viaje. Vivimos con la esperanza de poder hacer de nuestra familia, nuestra iglesia y el mundo un lugar de amor y paz. Amemos a quien llamamos, el “Camino, la Verdad y la Luz”. Tenemos compañeros en nuestro camino. “Regocijémonos. Alegría para el mundo.”

There is a Way
(After fifty years as a priest, I still believe)
I grew up in a blue collar, Catholic parish in Omaha, Nebraska. The parents of my friends and classmates were carpenters, plumbers, painters and electricians. There were railroad and packing house workers. There were teachers, nurses, clerks, police and firemen. Many of the men returned from service in World War II and Korea. It was a community that helped neighbors in time of need. A president called on America to “Ask not what our country can do for you, but what you can do for your country.” He promised that there would be a man on the moon in a decade. In difficult moments, we believed that there was a way to solve problems and to address human needs.
Not only was the belief that there is a way to solve the problems of our families, our neighborhoods, and our nation, but we believed that there is a way to peace in our hearts and in our faith communities. The Pope called for a Council and that we needed fresh air in our Church. Civil rights leaders called on us to face our injustices. We believed that there is a way to peace, and we would not walk that path alone. At the Last Supper, Jesus said, “I am the way.” While professing that Jesus is the way, we needed to encounter Jesus, to meet him personally. Jesus told us where he could be found, “When I was hungry, you gave me to eat. When I was thirsty, you gave me to drink. When I was a stranger you welcomed me….”
Even with uncomfortable unrest seen in coming to grips with racism, inner cities burning, and our growing involvement in a war in Viet Nam, we grew up believing that no matter the problem or crisis, there is a way to make our world a better place. As a young man, my response to that belief was to become a missionary, a priest, a Redemptorist.
Much has happened in the years since I professed vows as a Redemptorist in 1968, and was ordained a priest in 1973. The Way promised Jesus has many curves, mountain tops and valleys. It is beautiful seeing the world from the mountain top, but from the valley we do not see the mountain top. We only see the steep hill that we have to climb. But there is a Way.
As a new year begins, we turn to faith. We are not alone on this journey. We live in hope that we can make our family, our church and the world a place of love and peace. Let us love the one whom we call, the “Way, the Truth, and the Light.” We have companions on our journey. “Joy to the World.”

Oh Jesús, tú nos llamas: “Síganme”. Bendice, Señor, a todos los que acogen tu llamado. Puede que el camino no sea fácil, pero tenemos la confianza de que todo es posible si caminamos contigo. Que este viaje nos abra los ojos a las maravillas de tu amor por nosotros. Oramos por toda tu gente, por todos los creyentes e incrédulos, por los líderes y seguidores. Oramos por la sanación, el perdón, la compasión, la justicia y la paz. Oramos para que, al seguirte, nosotros también podamos ser pescadores de hombres. Bendícenos en nuestro viaje.
O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
