The Transfiguration / La Transfiguración

The Transfiguration / La Transfiguración

The Transfiguration

Disciples of Jesus ascended and descended a mountain with Jesus. He was the same Jesus going up and down the mountain, but on the mountain, they saw him in his glory. They saw the divine presence in him. The scripture says that he told them not to say anything of what they saw. They were probably still trying to figure out what they saw. They knew on the mountain that they were in the presence of God. While Jesus was transfigured before them, the disciples themselves were changed also.

This weekend in Kansas City was quite remarkable. For ten days, people in this city have been adjusting to a tragic event. As the city celebrated the Kansas City Chiefs winning the Super Bowl, a good woman, Lisa Lopez-Galvan was shot during the celebration. She was well known in the city as someone full of life, bringing joy to many moments of life. Her Catholic faith, her Hispanic heritage and her joyful love of Kansas City and its people made her senseless death a painful moment for the entire city.

Friday evening, over 5,000 people entered and left our church to pay their respects. A church that seats over 1,000 people was packed with several hundred people lining the aisles on Saturday for the Mass of the Resurrection. It was impressive seeing the good people of Kansas City gathered for this celebration of the life of Lisa Lopez-Galvan. In the outpouring of so much love and faith, I believe that we experienced a transfiguration of our city. I am sure that there were people hurting, but the sounds of the liturgy were of a glorious organ lifting up our prayers, and the joy filled music of faith accompanied by mariachi.

The disciples saw Jesus on the mountain as the Son of God. Kansas City prayed today, not only for Lisa and her family. We prayed for all to become transformed as witnesses to the hope. May God receive Lisa Lopez-Galvan in his loving embrace, comfort her family and bless our community with peace.

O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
